Decentralized exchanges, or DEXes, are apps that let you swap one crypto token for another straight from your own wallet. Instead of a company holding your funds and matching orders, smart contracts on a blockchain handle the trade. This page ranks the DEXes on our site, from Ethereum staples like Uniswap to chain-specific venues such as PancakeSwap on BNB Chain, SUNSwap on TRON and Meteora on Solana.
Most DEXes run on automated market makers. Liquidity providers deposit pairs of tokens into a pool, and traders swap against that pool at a price set by a formula. Others, like Hyperliquid Spot Orderbook and XRPL DEX, use an on-chain order book. Revenue mostly comes from swap fees, which are split between liquidity providers and, depending on the protocol, the treasury or token holders. Newer designs add extras: Uniswap V4 supports hooks, Fluid DEX lets LP positions double as collateral, and THORChain swaps native assets across chains without wrapped tokens.
When comparing, start with which chain the DEX runs on and whether it has deep liquidity for the pair you want, since TVL gives a rough signal. Then look at fees, how the app routes trades, audit history and the age of the contracts. If you want to provide liquidity, check the pool type, such as concentrated, stable-asset or bin-based, and how much management it needs. This page is for information only. Crypto trading carries real risk, and you should confirm that the activity is legal where you live.</br>

Frequently asked questions
What is a decentralized exchange (DEX)?
A DEX is a trading venue run by smart contracts instead of a company. You connect your own wallet, swap tokens against on-chain liquidity pools or an on-chain order book, and the tokens never sit in an exchange account. You still pay network gas fees and can lose money from price moves.
How do DEXes make money and what do swaps cost?
Most DEXes charge a small swap fee that goes mostly to liquidity providers, and some of it may go to the protocol or token holders. On top of that you pay the blockchain's gas fee, and large trades in thin pools can suffer price impact or slippage. Fees vary by pool and chain, so check the quote before you confirm.
Which DEX is the biggest?
Uniswap is the most widely used name in the list, with V2, V3 and V4 all holding large amounts of liquidity at the time of writing. PancakeSwap leads on BNB Chain, while Solana users often look at PumpSwap, Meteora and Sanctum Infinity. The best fit depends on the chain and the tokens you want to trade.
Are DEXes safer than centralized exchanges?
Not necessarily. Your funds stay in your wallet until you trade, which removes exchange custody risk, but you take on smart contract bugs, fake tokens, bad approvals and phishing sites. Stick to established protocols, check token contract addresses, and revoke approvals you no longer need.
Do I need KYC to use a DEX?
Many DEXes let you swap without an account, but whether you face identity checks depends on the front end, your location and the rules that apply to you. Some interfaces restrict certain regions. Check the local rules yourself and do not try to get around any restriction or verification step.
Is providing liquidity on a DEX profitable?
Liquidity providers deposit tokens into a pool and earn a share of trading fees, but they can lose value through impermanent loss when prices diverge. Concentrated liquidity designs such as Uniswap V3 and Meteora DLMM can raise fee income per dollar but need active range management. Only provide what you can afford to lose.
What is the largest DEX by TVL?
Uniswap V3 is the largest DEX by total value locked, with $1.51B. It is followed by Uniswap V4 ($1.14B) and Uniswap V2 ($864M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which DEX has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Uniswap V4 has the highest score at 8.5/10, ahead of Uniswap V3 (8.4) and Uniswap V2 (8.0). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many DEXes does DappsAtlas track?
DappsAtlas tracks 1,136 DEXes. Of these, 1,136 have a full review and 783 report value locked, $7.15B in total.
What chains do most DEXes run on?
Which DEXes grew the most this week?
Among DEXes with at least $1M locked, Stable Swap V3 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+95.8%) and Manifest Trade the biggest drop (−63.9%). Combined TVL moved −5.1% over the same seven days.
What is the average score for DEXes?
The 711 rated DEXes average 5.4 out of 10. Of these, 5 score 8 or higher and 211 score below 5.
