Aerodrome Review 2026: Base's Main AMM and AERO Token

Aerodrome is an automated market maker on Base that acts as the network's main liquidity hub, pairing a token-incentive engine with vote-lock governance. It suits users who trade or provide liquidity on Base and accept AMM and token-incentive risks.

Our verdict on Aerodrome

7.3/10

Aerodrome is aimed at users who trade or provide liquidity on Base and are comfortable with AMM mechanics. Its main strength is its role as the network's central liquidity hub, built on the Velodrome V2 vote-lock and incentive model. The main caveat is risk: reward income depends on AERO's price, impermanent loss applies, and audit and fee details are not covered here, so check them before depositing.

What is Aerodrome?

Aerodrome is a decentralised exchange on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network. It is described as a next-generation automated market maker built to serve as Base's central liquidity hub. It combines a liquidity incentive engine, a vote-lock governance model and a straightforward trading interface.

The design inherits the latest features from Velodrome V2. Its token, AERO, is used for governance, staking and activity within the ecosystem. One market-data page lists a supply of roughly 1.98 billion AERO, and quoted market caps vary between sources.

Aerodrome's own site could not be reviewed here, so details such as audits, team and fee tiers are not covered. Readers should check those in the app and official documentation.

How Aerodrome works

Aerodrome is an automated market maker. Instead of matching buyers and sellers, it holds tokens in pools, and prices are set by the ratio of tokens in each pool. When you swap, you trade against the pool and pay a fee that goes to those who supplied the liquidity.

The protocol adds an incentive layer. AERO emissions are directed to pools to attract liquidity, and holders who lock AERO in the vote-lock system help decide which pools receive those rewards. This model comes from Velodrome V2, whose features Aerodrome inherits.

The aim is deeper liquidity for tokens on Base, which means less slippage for traders. The cost is that rewards depend on the token's value and on governance choices.

6 features

Key features

01

AMM token swaps

Users swap tokens against on-chain liquidity pools without an order book or a centralised custodian.

02

Liquidity pools

Liquidity providers deposit token pairs into pools and receive rewards for supplying liquidity on Base.

03

Liquidity incentive engine

AERO emissions are used as an incentive engine to attract liquidity to chosen pools.

04

Vote-lock governance

Holders lock AERO to take part in governance, which steers where incentives are directed.

05

Base liquidity hub

The protocol aims to be Base's central liquidity hub, concentrating trading depth for assets on the network.

06

Velodrome V2 lineage

The design carries over the latest features of Velodrome V2, a known AMM model.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Positioned as the central liquidity hub on Base, so it concentrates trading depth on one network.
  • Builds on the Velodrome V2 design, an established AMM and vote-lock model.
  • Vote-lock governance lets token holders influence where rewards go.
  • Non-custodial swaps against on-chain pools, with no account sign-up.
  • AERO is widely listed, with market trackers counting dozens of exchanges.

Watch out for

  • Smart-contract risk applies to the AMM pools and to the vote-escrow and bonding mechanisms, and no audit details are.
  • Liquidity providers face impermanent loss on volatile pairs, and the emission-funded rewards can fall when AERO's price falls.
  • Activity is concentrated on a single chain, Base, so it inherits that chain's risks and its trading activity.
  • Governance power depends on locking AERO, which favours large holders and removes the flexibility to exit quickly.
  • Fees, team details and audit reports are not covered by the sources reviewed here, so users must check them in the app and docs before depositing.

Aerodrome fees

Aerodrome's fee schedule is not covered. As with most AMMs, each pool charges a swap fee that goes to liquidity providers or the protocol, and the rate differs by pool. The app shows the fee and expected price impact before you confirm a trade.

You also pay Base network gas on every transaction. Liquidity providers should account for impermanent loss, which is a cost of providing liquidity that does not show up as a fee.

Is Aerodrome safe?

Aerodrome is a smart-contract protocol, so funds in pools are exposed to code risk. Public sources do not list audits, bug-bounty programs or past incidents, so check the project's documentation for audit reports before depositing. Swaps are non-custodial, meaning you keep your keys, but approvals you sign can give contracts spending rights, so review them.

Liquidity providers also face impermanent loss, and reward tokens can lose value. Regulatory treatment of DeFi varies by country, so check the rules where you live.

6 steps

How to get started with Aerodrome

  1. 1

Set up a wallet that supports Base and keep a small amount of ETH on Base for gas.

  2. 2

Confirm you are on the official Aerodrome site through the project's verified channels, as fake sites target DeFi users.

  3. 3

Connect the wallet and choose a swap, or pick a liquidity pool if you want to earn rewards.

  4. 4

Check the pool fee, price impact and slippage settings before approving a transaction.

  5. 5

If you provide liquidity, review the pair's volatility and the reward rate, and start with a small amount.

  6. 6

If you want a say in incentives, read how vote-locking works and its lock duration before locking any AERO.

Who Aerodrome is for

Aerodrome suits people who already use Base and want to swap tokens or earn rewards by providing liquidity. It also fits users who want a voice in how incentives are directed through vote-locked AERO. It is less suitable for beginners who are unfamiliar with impermanent loss or who want guaranteed returns.

Aerodrome FAQs

What is Aerodrome?

Aerodrome is a decentralised exchange built as an automated market maker on the Base network. Users swap tokens against liquidity pools, and liquidity providers earn rewards for supplying those pools. It is described as Base's central liquidity hub.

What is the AERO token used for?

AERO is the primary token of the ecosystem. It is used for governance, staking and to facilitate activity within Aerodrome, and holders can lock it in the vote-lock system to take part in directing incentives.

Which blockchain does Aerodrome run on?

Aerodrome runs on Base. The sources reviewed do not mention deployments on other networks.

Is Aerodrome related to Velodrome?

Aerodrome inherits the latest features from Velodrome V2, a similar AMM design, according to one third-party write-up. It is described as a next-generation version of that model adapted to Base.

Is Aerodrome safe to use?

Yes. Smart-contract bugs, impermanent loss for liquidity providers, token price swings and wallet-security errors can all cause losses. Public sources do not list audit reports, so check the project's documentation before depositing and never commit more than you can afford to lose.

What does it cost to trade on Aerodrome?

Aerodrome's own fee schedule is not covered in the sources reviewed. Swap fees vary by pool and are shown in the app before you confirm a trade, and you also pay Base network gas.
