Our verdict on Compound V3

8.0/10

Compound V3 suits DeFi users who want a long-running lending protocol with isolated markets and published risk parameters. Its main strength is its track record, about $1.34B in TVL and presence on ten chains. The main caveat is that borrowing is overcollateralized and exposed to liquidation penalties of 5%-10%, and that smart-contract and governance risk remain. Newcomers should start small and watch collateral ratios.

What is Compound V3?

Compound V3 is the latest generation of Compound, an on-chain lending protocol that lets users supply assets to earn yield or borrow against collateral. DefiLlama lists it under Lending with roughly $1.34B in total value locked, a 1.4% drop over seven days, and a listing date of September 2022.

Unlike the earlier pooled design, V3 uses isolated markets with one borrowable base asset each. Other assets serve only as collateral. DefiLlama shows deployments on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Mantle, Unichain, Linea, Scroll and Ronin.

The homepage describes Compound as a global market for capital and promotes a new Compound Institutional Market focused on USDC borrowing. It also cites $57B in all-time loans. It is run with a Compound Foundation and governance by COMP holders. This review rests on published data and does not reflect hands-on testing.

How Compound V3 works

Compound V3 runs separate lending markets. Each one has a single base asset that can be borrowed, such as USDC. Suppliers deposit that asset and earn interest paid by borrowers. Interest rates adjust algorithmically with how much of the market is borrowed.

Borrowers post approved collateral, such as ETH, WBTC or other listed assets, and borrow the base asset against it. Loans are overcollateralized. The homepage lists loan-to-value of 81%-87% and a $10M borrow cap per collateral. If the collateral value falls too far, the position can be liquidated, with a penalty of 5%-10% according to the homepage.

The protocol is governed by COMP token holders, who vote on proposals such as adding collateral assets or tuning interest rate curves. Public reporting shows proposals to add USDT, tBTC and deployments on other chains.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • About $1.34B in TVL and a listing history back to 2022 suggest an established protocol
  • Available on ten chains, including Ethereum and several Layer 2 networks
  • Isolated markets with one borrowable asset make each market's risk easier to assess
  • Two audits are listed on DefiLlama, and an Immunefi bug bounty of up to $1M is advertised
  • Borrow parameters such as loan-to-value, liquidation factor and caps are published on the homepage
  • Governance is handled by COMP token holders through public proposals

Watch out for

  • Each market has a single borrowable asset, so borrowers get less flexibility than in the pooled design of the earlier version
  • Overcollateralized borrowing means you need to lock up more value than you take out
  • Liquidation penalties of 5%-10% (per the homepage) can be costly if collateral prices fall sharply
  • Smart-contract risk remains even with audits and a bug bounty
  • Supply and borrow rates are market-driven and not fixed, so returns and costs can change
  • Governance changes, such as new collateral or parameter updates, can alter market risk after you deposit

Compound V3 fees

The project does not publish a fee schedule. Supply and borrow rates are set by market conditions and shown in the app for each market. Users also pay network gas fees on whichever chain they use.

The homepage lists a liquidation penalty of 5%-10% on borrow positions that get liquidated. Check current rates, collateral factors and caps in the app before opening a position.

Is Compound V3 safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits, and the homepage describes independent audits, testing, a market risk assessment and an Immunefi-backed bug bounty of up to $1M. The project does not name the auditors or give audit dates, so check the security page and documentation for the reports.

The protocol is non-custodial, so users keep their keys but carry smart-contract, oracle and liquidation risk. Governance can change collateral and parameters, so market risk can shift after you deposit. The project does not describe any past incidents or the regulatory status of the app. Check the terms of service and whether the service is available in your jurisdiction.

6 steps

How to get started with Compound V3

  1. 1

Choose a chain and a market (for example the USDC market on Ethereum or a Layer 2) in the Compound app.

  2. 2

Connect a compatible self-custody wallet and hold some of the chain's native token for gas.

  3. 3

To earn, supply the market's base asset and watch the current supply rate.

  4. 4

To borrow, deposit supported collateral first, then borrow the base asset well below your limit.

  5. 5

Monitor your collateral ratio and keep a buffer against price drops to avoid liquidation.

  6. 6

Review governance proposals, since they can change collateral and market parameters.

Who Compound V3 is for

Compound V3 is for people who already hold crypto and want to earn yield on a stablecoin or ETH, or borrow without selling their collateral. It also suits users who prefer governed, parameter-driven markets. It is less suited to anyone uncomfortable with liquidation risk or with managing a self-custody wallet.

Compound V3 FAQs

What is Compound V3?

Compound V3, also called Comet, is the third version of the Compound lending protocol. Each market has one borrowable base asset, such as USDC or ETH, and other assets are accepted only as collateral.

Which blockchains does Compound V3 support?

DefiLlama lists Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Mantle, Unichain, Linea, Scroll and Ronin. Which markets exist on each chain varies, so check the app before depositing.

How do I earn yield on Compound V3?

You supply the market's base asset, such as USDC, and earn a market-driven rate. The homepage says withdrawals are available at any time, subject to available liquidity.

How does borrowing and liquidation work?

You deposit supported collateral and borrow the base asset. The homepage lists loan-to-value of 81%-87%, a liquidation factor of 86%-93% and a liquidation penalty of 5%-10%. If your position crosses the liquidation threshold, collateral can be sold to repay the debt.

Is Compound V3 safe?

No. DefiLlama lists two audits and the homepage mentions an Immunefi bug bounty of up to $1M, but these reduce risk rather than remove it. Smart-contract bugs, oracle problems and market stress can still cause losses.

What is the COMP token?

COMP is the Compound governance token, per DefiLlama. Holders take part in governance, which includes votes on proposals such as adding collateral assets or changing market parameters.
