Excellent
Our verdict on Uniswap V3
8.4/10Uniswap V3 suits DeFi users who want to swap tokens from their own wallet on a wide choice of chains, and liquidity providers willing to manage price ranges. Its main strength is breadth: about $1.6 billion in TVL, two listed audits and deployments on more than 40 networks. The main caveat is risk. Impermanent loss, out-of-range positions, gas costs and unvetted tokens can hurt, and the project does not publish a full fee schedule, so costs should be checked before each trade.

What is Uniswap V3?
Uniswap V3 is a decentralized exchange protocol for swapping tokens and providing liquidity without a central operator holding user funds. DefiLlama files it under DEXs and shows roughly $1.6 billion in total value locked, with a 7-day TVL change of 0.7%. It has been tracked there since October 2022.
The protocol is listed on more than 40 chains, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Unichain and Avalanche. The official interface describes swapping crypto on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Unichain and more, and calls itself the DeFi platform trusted by millions. That user claim is the homepage's own and is not verified here.
DefiLlama lists a native token, UNI, and two audits.
How Uniswap V3 works
Uniswap V3 is an automated market maker. Instead of an order book matching buyers and sellers, traders swap against pools of two tokens held in smart contracts. The price moves along a formula as the pool's balance changes.
The key V3 idea is concentrated liquidity. Providers pick a price range, and their capital is only active while the market price is inside it. That can make trading deeper around the current price. If the price leaves the range, the position stops earning fees until it moves back or is adjusted.
Traders pay a fee on each swap that goes to the liquidity providers of that pool. Providers can lose value compared with simply holding the tokens when prices move, which is called impermanent loss.
6 features
Key features
01
Concentrated liquidity
Liquidity providers choose a price range for their capital, which can make liquidity deeper near the current price.
02
Wide multichain reach
DefiLlama lists deployments on more than 40 networks, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon and Unichain.
03
Non-custodial swaps
Users trade tokens from their own wallet through the web interface, with no account signup described publicly.
04
Open liquidity provision
Anyone can supply liquidity to pools and earn a share of trading fees, subject to price-range and impermanent-loss risk.
05
Multiple fee tiers
Pools are set up with fee tiers, so providers can pick a tier to match a pair's expected volatility.
06
UNI token ecosystem
The protocol has a native token, UNI, listed by DefiLlama, tied to the wider Uniswap ecosystem.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Listed on more than 40 chains, so the same type of pool is available across many networks.
- About $1.6 billion in TVL on DefiLlama shows substantial deposited liquidity.
- Non-custodial: users trade from their own wallets.
- Concentrated liquidity lets providers target price ranges for more capital-efficient fee earning.
- DefiLlama lists two audits and a track record since October 2022.
Watch out for
- Liquidity providers face impermanent loss, and concentrated positions can go out of range and stop earning fees.
- Managing a V3 position takes more attention than a simple V2-style pool.
- Swaps carry gas costs and slippage, and costs vary a lot between chains and trading pairs.
- Anyone can list a token, so scam and low-liquidity tokens are easy to run into without careful checking.
- Smart-contract risk remains despite audits, and public sources list only two audits.
- The project does not state Uniswap V3's own fee schedule or front-end fee, so costs must be checked in the app.
Uniswap V3 fees
Swap costs are made up of the pool fee tier, network gas and price impact, and the interface shows these before you confirm a trade. Any interface fee should be checked there as well.
In V3, each pool has a fixed fee tier, and traders pay that fee to the liquidity providers. Gas costs differ greatly between Ethereum mainnet and layer-2 chains, so the same swap can cost very different amounts depending on the network.
Is Uniswap V3 safe?
DefiLlama lists two audits for Uniswap V3. The project does not name the auditors or give the reports, so readers should check the official documentation. Audits reduce but do not remove smart-contract risk.
Because it is a non-custodial protocol, your main exposures are your own wallet security, token approvals, fake or malicious tokens and impermanent loss for liquidity providers. The project does not mention hacks or incidents affecting the protocol. Check that you are on the official app address, and revoke approvals you no longer need. Regulatory treatment of DEX use varies by country, so confirm what applies where you live.
6 steps
How to get started with Uniswap V3
- 1
Install or open a self-custody wallet that supports the network you want, such as Ethereum, Base or Arbitrum.
- 2
Fund the wallet with the tokens you plan to trade plus the chain's native token for gas.
- 3
Open the official Uniswap app and double-check the address before connecting your wallet.
- 4
Select the network, choose the tokens to swap and verify the contract address of any token you do not recognise.
- 5
Review the quoted price, price impact, fees and slippage setting, then confirm in your wallet.
- 6
To provide liquidity instead, start with small amounts and learn how price ranges and impermanent loss work before committing larger funds.
Who Uniswap V3 is for
Uniswap V3 is for people who already have a self-custody wallet and want to swap tokens or provide liquidity on-chain. Casual swappers can use the interface for simple trades, while liquidity providers need to understand price ranges, fee tiers and impermanent loss before putting in meaningful funds.
Uniswap V3 FAQs
What is Uniswap V3?
Uniswap V3 is an automated market maker, a decentralized exchange protocol where users swap tokens directly from their wallets against liquidity pools. Liquidity providers can place funds in chosen price ranges to earn trading fees.
Which blockchains does Uniswap V3 support?
DefiLlama lists it on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Unichain, Avalanche, Linea, Scroll, Sonic and many more. The list runs to more than 40 networks, and DefiLlama also names a few chains this review does not map.
Does Uniswap have a token?
Yes. The protocol's own token is UNI, per DefiLlama. Public sources provided do not describe its governance details or supply, so check the official documentation for that.
What does it cost to use Uniswap V3?
The project does not publish a fee table. In general, V3 pools have fixed fee tiers set per pool, and traders also pay network gas. The app shows the expected cost and price impact before you confirm a swap.
Is Uniswap V3 safe?
No, it is non-custodial in the usual sense: you trade from your own wallet and sign each transaction. The main risks are smart-contract bugs, fake tokens, bad approvals and wallet security rather than a company holding your funds.
How is V3 different from earlier versions?
V3 introduced concentrated liquidity, where providers choose a price range for their capital instead of spreading it across all prices. This can earn more fees per dollar while in range, but it adds management work and risk.
