Base is a layer-2 network that runs on top of Ethereum. It was incubated by Coinbase and is built on the OP Stack, an optimistic rollup design. Transactions are executed on Base and the resulting data is posted back to Ethereum, so the network leans on Ethereum for final security while charging lower fees than the mainnet. Base is fully EVM-compatible, which means Ethereum wallets, tools and smart contracts work with little or no modification.
Base has no native token of its own. Gas fees are paid in ETH, and they are usually a small fraction of what the same action costs on Ethereum mainnet. DeFi on Base holds about $5.87 billion in total value locked at the time of writing, and our site lists 647 dApps on the chain. Moving funds in typically means bridging from Ethereum or withdrawing from an exchange that supports Base.
The ecosystem is known mostly for lending and liquidity. Aave V3, Morpho Blue, Compound V3 and Fluid Lending handle borrowing and earning, while Uniswap V2, V3 and V4 cover token swaps. ether.fi Stake offers liquid staking, and risk curators such as Steakhouse Financial and Gauntlet manage vaults on top of lending protocols. Spark Liquidity Layer and Grove Finance move stablecoin capital into onchain strategies, and LayerZero V2 and CCIP provide cross-chain messaging. Centralized exchanges such as Binance CEX, OKX and Bitget also appear in the list, but their TVL figures cover many networks and are not specific to Base.

Base FAQs
What is Base?
Base is a layer-2 network built on top of Ethereum. It was incubated by Coinbase and is built on the OP Stack. It processes transactions off the Ethereum mainnet and posts the data back to Ethereum, which aims to give lower fees while relying on Ethereum for security.
Is Base compatible with Ethereum?
Yes. Base is EVM-compatible, so apps written for Ethereum usually work there with few changes. That is why many Ethereum protocols, including Aave V3, Uniswap V3 and Compound V3, run on Base, and why Ethereum wallets can connect to it.
Does Base have its own token, and what do I pay fees in?
Base has no native token of its own, and our data lists none. Network fees are paid in ETH. You need a small ETH balance on Base itself to cover gas, which you can get by bridging from Ethereum or withdrawing from an exchange that supports Base.
How much value is locked in Base DeFi?
At the time of writing, DeFi on Base holds about $5.87 billion in total value locked. This figure changes daily. Our site lists 647 dApps on the chain, so it is worth checking each app's own page for current numbers.
Which dApps are most prominent on Base?
Lending leads, with Aave V3, Morpho Blue, Compound V3 and Fluid Lending all active on Base. Uniswap V2, V3 and V4 cover token swaps, and ether.fi Stake covers liquid staking. Cross-chain tools such as LayerZero V2 and CCIP are also listed.
Why do centralized exchanges appear in a list of Base dApps?
Some of the large TVL figures on this page, such as those for Binance CEX, OKX and Bitget, are totals across many networks and are not held on Base alone. Centralized exchanges also hold funds on your behalf, unlike self-custody DeFi apps. Treat those figures as a sign of the platform's overall size, not of Base activity.
What are the main risks of using dApps on Base?
Smart contract bugs, bridge failures and the loss of value in a pegged asset can all cause losses on any chain. Base also relies on Ethereum and on its own rollup infrastructure, so problems in either can affect users. Read each app's documentation, start with small amounts and only use funds you can afford to lose.
What is the largest dApp on Base by TVL?
Binance CEX is the largest dApp on Base by total value locked, with $127B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by OKX ($28.4B) and LayerZero V2 ($16.7B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which dApp on Base has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Aave V3 has the highest score at 8.6/10, ahead of Uniswap V4 (8.5) and Uniswap V3 (8.4). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many dApps are on Base?
DappsAtlas tracks 720 dApps on Base. Of these, 720 have a full review and 474 report value locked, $247B in total, counting value on every chain they support.
What are the most common types of dApps on Base?
DEXes (104), Lending (58) and Yield Aggregator (50) are the largest categories on Base, by number of projects.
Which dApps on Base grew the most this week?
Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Contango V2 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+138%) and APX Bridge the biggest drop (−93.1%). Combined TVL moved −2.8% over the same seven days.
What is the average score for dApps on Base?
The 566 rated dApps on Base average 6.0 out of 10. Of these, 13 score 8 or higher and 74 score below 5.
