What PancakeSwap and CAKE are

CAKE is the native token of PancakeSwap, a decentralized exchange (DEX) built around an automated market maker. Instead of matching buyers and sellers through an order book, the protocol lets users swap tokens against pools of assets that other users have deposited. Those depositors are called liquidity providers, and they earn a share of the trading fees.

PancakeSwap began on BNB Chain, where low fees and fast confirmations helped it attract retail traders. It has since grown into a multichain product. Its current AMM V3 uses concentrated liquidity, which lets providers place capital within chosen price ranges. The platform also offers farming, staking, perpetual trading and a launchpad for new tokens.

CAKE sits at the center of this ecosystem as its utility and governance asset. It is not the gas token of any blockchain, so it does not pay network fees. Its role is inside the PancakeSwap platform. At the time of writing, CAKE ranks around 91st by market capitalization, which puts it among the larger DeFi and exchange-related tokens but well below the top tier of the market.

What CAKE is used for

CAKE has several functions inside PancakeSwap, and public descriptions group them into a few areas.

  • Staking and farming: Users can stake CAKE or deposit liquidity-provider tokens in farms to earn rewards, often paid in CAKE.
  • Governance: Holders can vote on proposals and on how incentives are directed across pools.
  • Launchpad participation: CAKE has been tied to access to token launches and related offerings on the platform.
  • Fee benefits: Some descriptions mention lower trading fees or other perks for users who hold or lock CAKE.
  • Lottery: Earlier versions of the platform let users enter a CAKE lottery.

The exact mechanics of each feature change as PancakeSwap updates its products, so check the current documentation inside the app before relying on any of them.

A note on the lottery: it is a form of gambling. Participants must be 18 or older (21 or older where local law requires it), and should confirm that online gambling is legal where they live. Availability may be restricted in some regions, and those restrictions should be respected.

Supply and tokenomics

The data lists a maximum supply of 400 million CAKE. As of 2026-11-05, about 328.3 million tokens are circulating and about 339.8 million exist in total. That puts circulating supply at roughly 82% of the stated maximum.

At the time of writing, the price is about $1.98 with a market capitalization near $648.8 million. The fully diluted valuation, which assumes the whole maximum supply were circulating, is listed at about $671.6 million. Trading volume over 24 hours is about $56.4 million. The price is down roughly 2.2% over seven days and about 9.7% over one year.

CAKE has historically paid out token emissions as farming and staking rewards, and the project has described mechanisms to reduce supply, including burning tokens. I do not have verified details on the current emission schedule, burn rates or allocation percentages here, so check the project's official tokenomics documentation for those numbers. A supply cap helps limit long-term dilution, but it does not guarantee any price outcome.

Chains and how CAKE is held and traded

CAKE is issued on many networks. The listed chains are BNB Chain, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Linea, Polygon zkEVM, zkSync Era, opBNB, Aptos and Solana. It is not the native coin of any of them, so you still need each chain's own gas token to move CAKE on it.

Most people hold CAKE in a self-custody wallet that supports the chain they use, such as a browser or mobile wallet. Others keep it on a centralized exchange that lists it. Trading happens in two main ways: on PancakeSwap itself, by swapping against liquidity pools, or on centralized exchanges through order books.

The same token can exist in several forms across chains. Some versions are bridged or wrapped copies, which can carry extra risk from the bridge. Always confirm the correct contract address for the chain you are using, and be cautious with lookalike tokens that use the same name and symbol. If you move CAKE between chains, check which official method the project supports.

History and notable events

CAKE's price history in the data starts in November 2020, when it hit its all-time low of about $0.19 on 2020-11-03. Public reporting also describe the token as launched in 2020. PancakeSwap grew quickly during the 2021 boom in BNB Chain activity, drawn by low fees and a simple interface aimed at retail users.

The token reached its all-time high of about $43.96 on 2021-04-30. At about $1.98 as of 2026-11-05, it trades roughly 95% below that peak. That reflects the wider market cycle and the fading of the early yield-farming boom, not any single event.

Over the years PancakeSwap has added new versions of its exchange, expanded to other blockchains and broadened into perpetuals and launchpad products. One analyst-style write-up in public reporting calls it user friendly and retail focused, strong in breadth but behind some Ethereum-native rivals in deep DeFi innovation. That is an opinion rather than a fact, but it captures a common view. I have not confirmed specific incidents or governance changes beyond what is described here.

Risks to understand

CAKE carries the usual risks of a DeFi token, and a few that are specific to its design.

  • Price volatility: The price has fallen about 95% from its 2021 high and can move sharply in either direction.
  • Smart contract risk: Exchange, farming and staking contracts can contain bugs or be exploited, even after audits.
  • Impermanent loss: Liquidity providers can end up with less value than if they had simply held their tokens, especially in concentrated liquidity ranges.
  • Reward dependence: Farming yields paid in CAKE can lose value if the token's price drops.
  • Cross-chain risk: Bridged and wrapped versions add exposure to bridge failures.
  • Competition: PancakeSwap competes with many other DEXs, and its market share can shift.
  • Scams: Fake tokens, cloned sites and malicious approvals are common around popular DeFi names.

The lottery and other game-like features involve chance and should only be used by adults who have checked local legality. Nothing here is investment advice. Only commit money you can afford to lose, and read the project's own documentation before using any feature.

How to store CAKE safely

For holdings you do not plan to trade soon, a hardware wallet gives stronger protection than a browser wallet because the private keys stay on the device. Write down your recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never share it or type it into a website. No legitimate support team will ask for it.

Before swapping or staking, make sure you are on the correct PancakeSwap site. Bookmark it instead of searching each time, since fake sites and sponsored lookalikes are common. Verify the CAKE contract address for your chosen chain against the project's official documentation.

Token approvals let a contract spend your tokens until you revoke them. Review and revoke old approvals periodically, especially for platforms you no longer use. Keep a small amount of the chain's gas token in the wallet so you can move or exit positions.

If you leave CAKE on a centralized exchange, remember that you do not control the keys. Use strong two-factor authentication there, and complete any identity checks the exchange requires.

By the numbers

PancakeSwap in numbers

PancakeSwap (CAKE) is ranked #90 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $633M and a price of $1.93 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($655M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 2.9% over 7 days, down 16.4% over 30 days, down 15.1% over the past year. It trades about 96% below its all-time high of $43.96, set on Apr 30, 2021.

About 328.26M CAKE are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 400M (82% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $59.1M, or 9.3% of its market cap: high turnover.

CAKE has token contracts on 10 chains we track, including BNB Chain, Aptos, Ethereum, Base. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

CAKE is linked to Pancakeswap, which we cover in our DEXes rankings. See our Pancakeswap page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
