What Convex Finance and CVX are

Convex Finance is a DeFi protocol on Ethereum that sits on top of Curve Finance, the stablecoin-focused decentralized exchange. Its main job is to make Curve's reward system easier to use. Curve liquidity providers normally earn extra CRV rewards only if they lock CRV for long periods to get a boost. Convex pools that CRV and lets depositors collect boosted rewards without locking anything themselves.

CVX is the protocol's own token. It is separate from CRV, and it is the way people take part in Convex's governance and share in its revenue. The project's site description also lists support for Frax and f(x) Protocol liquidity providers, so Convex is no longer only a Curve add-on.

In plain terms, Convex works as a middle layer. Users deposit Curve LP tokens or CRV, Convex handles the locking and voting on the Curve side, and the rewards are passed back to depositors. CVX is what you hold if you want a say in how that machinery is steered, rather than just collecting yield from it.

What CVX is used for

CVX has two main uses: governance and revenue sharing. Locked CVX gives voting weight in Curve and f(x) Protocol gauge weight votes, which decide how reward emissions are split between pools. It also gives weight in admin proposals on Curve, f(x) Protocol, Frax and Convex itself. Because Convex controls a large amount of locked CRV, CVX lockers can influence where Curve incentives go. That influence is why protocols that want liquidity sometimes seek CVX votes.

The second use is income. People who lock CVX can earn a portion of the platform's revenue, which is paid out in cvxCRV tokens, along with other rewards that may be offered. Staking CVX is described on the project's site as withdrawable at any time, whereas locking for voting involves a fixed lock period, so the two are not the same thing.

CVX is also given as a reward to Curve liquidity providers and CRV stakers who use Convex, which is how it first reached users. Check the current interface for the lock terms and which rewards are live, as these can change by governance vote.

Supply and tokenomics

CVX has a maximum supply of 100 million tokens, and total supply equals that cap, so no further minting beyond it is expected. As of 2026-11-05, about 93.2 million CVX were circulating, which is roughly 93% of the maximum. That small gap between market cap and fully diluted value is visible in the figures: about $176.6M market cap against about $189.5M fully diluted value.

Because the supply is capped and most of it is already out, future dilution is limited compared with many newer tokens. Still, the data here does not give a detailed breakdown of allocation, vesting or emission schedules, so check the project's documentation if you need those specifics.

A large share of CVX is typically held in lock contracts, which means the number of tokens actually free to trade can be smaller than the circulating figure suggests. That is one reason liquidity can look thin on busy days. Trading volume over 24 hours was about $6.4M at the time of writing.

Chains, holding and trading

CVX is issued on Ethereum, and it is not the native token of any blockchain. It is a standard token that works with Ethereum wallets and apps. Most activity, including locking, staking and claiming rewards, happens through the Convex web app by connecting a wallet.

CVX is traded on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum. Availability on any specific exchange depends on its listing and on your region, so check directly. Buying on a decentralized exchange means holding ETH for network fees, which can be significant when the network is busy.

As of 2026-11-05, CVX ranked about 186th by market cap, with a price of about $1.89. Over the previous seven days it had fallen about 11.9%, while the one-year change was about 4.4%. These numbers move constantly and are given only for context, not as a signal of any kind.

History and notable events

Convex launched during the Curve Wars period, when protocols competed to direct CRV emissions toward their own pools. CVX became closely tied to that contest because Convex accumulated a very large share of locked CRV and the voting power that comes with it.

The token's all-time high was about $60.09 on 2022-01-01 according to the data used here, and its all-time low was about $1.04 on 2026-07-01. That means the price at the time of writing sits far below the peak and fairly close to the recent low. The data does not give an exact launch date, so none is stated here.

CVX's story is linked to Curve's own fortunes. When interest in Curve incentives and stablecoin liquidity wars cooled, much of the attention and revenue around Convex cooled as well. Anyone researching the token should read recent governance posts and protocol updates to see how the project has adapted, including its expansion to Frax and f(x) Protocol.

Risks to understand

The biggest risk is dependence. Convex's revenue and influence rest on Curve, so problems at Curve, falling CRV demand, or lower trading fees all feed through to CVX. Competing yield optimizers and changes in how Curve distributes rewards could also reduce Convex's share.

Smart contract risk is real. Convex layers its contracts on top of Curve's, so a bug in either could lead to loss of funds, even for audited code. Depositing into pools also carries the risks of the underlying assets, such as stablecoin depegs.

Governance concentration is another concern. Voting power rests with large lockers, so decisions may favor big holders. Locking CVX also reduces liquidity, as locked tokens cannot be sold until the lock ends, and the price can fall in the meantime. The token has dropped a long way from its high and trades on modest volume, so selling a large position may move the price. Yield rates are variable and not guaranteed. None of this is advice to buy or sell.

How to store CVX safely

CVX is an ordinary Ethereum token, so it can be held in any wallet that supports Ethereum assets. A hardware wallet is the usual choice for larger amounts, because the private keys stay off your internet-connected devices. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never share it or type it into a website.

If you use Convex itself, you will connect your wallet to the app and approve contract interactions. Check the address of the site you are using, bookmark it, and be wary of links sent in messages or social posts, since fake sites that imitate DeFi apps are common. Review each approval before signing, and consider revoking token permissions you no longer need.

Locked CVX cannot be moved until the lock expires, so only lock an amount you will not need in the meantime. Keep a little ETH in the wallet to pay network fees for claiming or unlocking. For smaller test amounts, try a transaction first before moving everything.

By the numbers

Convex Finance in numbers

Convex Finance (CVX) is ranked #185 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $174M and a price of $1.87 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $187M, so roughly 93% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 2.4% over 7 days, down 13.2% over 30 days, down 2.3% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $60.09, set on Jan 1, 2022.

About 93.19M CVX are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100M (93% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $6.96M, or 4.0% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

CVX has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
