What Venus (XVS) is

Venus (XVS) is the governance token of Venus Protocol, a decentralized money market. On Venus, users supply crypto assets to earn interest, and others borrow against their deposits as collateral. The lending side of the protocol is covered on our site under Venus Core Pool, which is a multi-chain market with about $1.18B in total value locked at the time of writing and a site score of 7.6/10.

XVS is separate from the assets people lend and borrow. It is not the thing you deposit to earn interest. Instead, it represents a say in how the protocol is run, along with a role in some of its incentive and revenue mechanisms.

Our categories place XVS among DeFi tokens, lending and borrowing tokens, and yield farming tokens. It is also tagged as part of the BNB Chain ecosystem and as a past Binance Launchpool project, which fits with the protocol's long association with BNB Chain. The token is not the native coin of any blockchain. It is an ordinary token issued on several networks, so it relies on the security of whichever chain it sits on.

As of 2026-11-05, XVS ranked around 460 by market capitalization, which makes it a small-cap asset.

What XVS is used for

The main publicly stated purpose of XVS is governance. Holders can vote on proposals, protocol upgrades and parameter changes. In a lending protocol, parameters matter a great deal: they include which assets are listed, how much can be borrowed against each one, and how risk settings are adjusted. Venus tracks these decisions as numbered proposals, such as VIP-638, which is referenced in the protocol's tokenomics documentation.

XVS also connects to an XVS Vault, where holders can stake the token. According to the current tokenomics page, XVS Vault rewards on BNB Chain no longer receive a share of protocol revenue. Since VIP-638, that 20% share is allocated to Venus Prime instead. Venus Prime is a separate rewards program tied to the protocol. We do not have the full eligibility rules here, so check the official documentation before relying on any detail.

For everyday lenders, the relevant tokens are vTokens, which represent a supplied position and can earn interest or serve as collateral to borrow other assets. XVS is not required to use the lending markets. It matters mainly to people who want to take part in governance or in the token's own incentive programs.

Supply and tokenomics

Public sources we have show a maximum supply of 30,000,000 XVS. At the time of writing, total supply was about 29.75 million, and circulating supply was about 16.89 million. That gap means a large share of existing tokens is not yet freely circulating, and it explains why the fully diluted valuation (about $84.9M) is well above the market cap (about $48.2M) as of 2026-11-05.

We do not have a verified breakdown of how the non-circulating tokens are held, locked or scheduled for release, so we will not guess. Readers who care about dilution should check the official tokenomics documentation and on-chain data for vault balances, treasury holdings and emissions.

The price was about $2.85 as of 2026-11-05, with reported 24-hour trading volume of roughly $876,637. Over the previous seven days the price was close to flat (down about 0.5%), and over one year it was down about 29%. For context, the all-time high was about $146.82 on 2021-05-09, and the all-time low was about $1.65 on 2020-10-05. These figures are historical and say nothing about future performance.

Chains and how XVS is held and traded

XVS is issued on several networks: BNB Chain, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync Era, Unichain and opBNB. The Venus lending protocol is also multi-chain, but the set of chains with active lending markets may differ from the set where XVS exists, so check each deployment individually.

On BNB Chain, XVS has been described in earlier documentation as a BEP-20 token. On other networks the token is a bridged or natively deployed version, and the contract address differs by chain. This matters for safety: sending XVS to a wallet on the wrong network, or interacting with a copycat contract, can mean permanent loss.

In general terms, people hold XVS in a self-custody wallet that supports the chain in question, or leave it on an exchange. It trades on centralized exchanges, and Binance appears in public reporting as one place to buy it. It also trades on decentralized exchanges on the networks above. Liquidity differs by venue and by chain, and with daily volume under a million dollars at the time of writing, large orders can move the price noticeably. Always confirm the official contract address from the project's own documentation before swapping.

History and recent developments

XVS has been around since at least 2020, since the data shows an all-time low in October 2020. We do not have a confirmed launch date or a verified project description in our data, so we avoid giving one. The token reached its peak in May 2021 during a broad crypto market rally and has traded far below that level since.

The token's later history has been shaped by changes to how value flows to holders. Recent documentation notes that the 20% revenue share once directed to XVS Vault rewards on BNB Chain now goes to Venus Prime, following VIP-638. This is a good example of governance in action, since such changes are decided through proposals rather than by a central team alone.

More recently, public reporting report that Venus launched Hub-Funded Spoke Markets. The reported idea is that shared liquidity in a hub is allocated to specialized lending pools. We have not tested it, and the details are best read in official announcements. Product changes like this can affect how the protocol earns fees and manages risk, and they may in turn influence how the token is used. It is worth reading governance discussions rather than relying on summaries.

Risks to understand

XVS carries the risks of a small-cap DeFi token plus the risks of the protocol behind it.

Smart contract risk. Lending protocols hold large pools of user funds in code. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it, and bugs or exploits can happen. Deployment across many chains widens the surface area.

Market and oracle risk. Venus relies on price feeds. A faulty or manipulated feed, or a sharp market drop, can trigger liquidations and bad debt, which can hurt confidence in the protocol and its token.

Governance risk. Voting power follows token holdings, so a small number of large holders can have outsized influence. Rule changes, like the revenue allocation shift to Venus Prime, can alter what holding the token offers.

Liquidity and dilution risk. Trading volume is modest relative to the market cap, and a sizable portion of the maximum supply is not yet circulating.

Bridge and network risk. Moving XVS between chains relies on bridges or other cross-chain systems, which have been targets of attacks across the industry.

Nothing here is financial advice. Only commit what you could afford to lose, and do your own research.

How to store XVS safely

For most holders, a self-custody wallet is the usual approach. A hardware wallet paired with a software interface keeps private keys offline, and it supports the EVM networks on which XVS is issued. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support staff.

Before receiving or swapping XVS, confirm which network you are on and verify the contract address from the project's official documentation. Fake tokens with the same name and symbol are common. Test with a small amount first when moving to a new address or chain.

If you stake in the XVS Vault or use Venus lending markets, you will sign contract approvals. These can stay active after you finish, so review and revoke unneeded approvals periodically using a reputable approval-checking tool. Consider using a separate wallet for DeFi activity and a different one for long-term holdings.

Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient for trading but means you rely on the platform's security and withdrawal policies. Enable two-factor authentication and use withdrawal allowlists if available. Beware of phishing links and fake airdrops.
