What Axelar is
Axelar is a proof-of-stake blockchain built to connect other blockchains. It works as a routing and messaging layer. A developer on one chain can send assets or call a smart contract on another chain through Axelar, using a fairly simple API rather than building a separate bridge for every chain pair.
The project describes itself as a kind of "Stripe for Web3", meaning the complicated parts of cross-chain communication are meant to stay out of sight of the end user. Behind the scenes, Axelar validators produce blocks, take part in multiparty signing and vote on the state of external chains.
On this site the issuing project is listed as Axelar Cross Chain, a cross-chain bridge aimed at developers, token issuers and institutions. Because it carries general messages as well as token transfers, it is grouped under both infrastructure tokens and bridge tokens. AXL is the network's own token, which is used to secure it and pay for activity on it.
What AXL is used for
According to the project's own description, AXL has three main jobs.
Staking and security. Holders delegate AXL to a validator's staking pool. Validators run the network, and delegators receive rewards minus the validator's commission. The stake behind each validator is what is meant to keep the network honest.
Transaction fees. AXL is used to pay network fees, which go to validators and token holders.
Governance. Holders can take part in decisions about how the network evolves.
One detail stands out: people who use Axelar do not need to hold AXL. The conversion into AXL and into destination-chain tokens is handled in the background, so a user pays gas once, in the token of the source chain. That means demand for AXL comes mostly from validators, delegators and the fee mechanism rather than from every end user buying it. Whether that produces lasting demand depends on how much cross-chain traffic the network actually carries.
Supply and tokenomics
At the time of writing (2025-11-05 data snapshot is not used here; figures are as of 2026-11-05), AXL had a circulating supply of about 1.25 billion tokens and a total supply of about 1.26 billion. No maximum supply is set in the data we have, so the supply is not formally capped.
The project says network rewards are inflationary, because staking rewards create new AXL and raise the total supply. It also says supply could become deflationary if the fee mechanism removes enough tokens to outweigh new issuance. Which way it goes depends on real usage, and we cannot say from the data whether that point has been reached.
As of 2026-11-05, the price was about $0.041, with a market cap of about $51.2 million and a fully diluted valuation of about $51.5 million. The two values are close because most of the total supply is already in circulation. Rank was around 432 by market cap, and 24-hour trading volume was about $4.1 million. We do not have reliable detail on the original token allocation or vesting schedule, so we do not describe it here.
Chains, holding and trading
The Axelar network has its own chain, where AXL is staked and delegated. Alongside that, AXL is issued as a token on a number of other networks: Ethereum, Avalanche, Fantom, Arbitrum, Moonbeam, Secret, BNB Chain, Osmosis, Polygon, Optimism and Base. Having it on many chains fits the project's purpose, since it is meant to sit between them.
In general terms, AXL can be traded on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on the chains listed above. It can be held in a self-custody wallet that supports the chain you choose, or left on an exchange account. Staking happens on the Axelar network itself, so staking usually needs a wallet that supports that network, and you pick a validator to delegate to.
Before moving any amount, check which network a given AXL token lives on. The same ticker can exist in several forms across several chains, and sending a token to an address on the wrong network can mean permanent loss. Always do a small test transfer first.
History and notable events
AXL reached an all-time high of about $2.64 on 2024-03-01. As of 2026-11-05 the price was far below that, roughly 72.8 percent lower than a year earlier. It was also about 10.4 percent lower over the previous seven days. The all-time low in our data is about $0.034, recorded on 2026-08-19, so the price was only modestly above that low at the time of writing.
One notable event from public reporting is a February 2024 announcement of a partnership between Ripple and the Axelar Foundation, aimed at bringing smart-contract capabilities to the XRP Ledger ecosystem through an EVM-compatible sidechain. We cannot verify the current state of that work from our data, so check the project's official announcements for updates.
We do not have a verified launch date or a full timeline of past upgrades, and we would rather leave those out than guess. For history beyond the price figures, the project's official documentation and governance forums are better sources.
Risks to understand
Market risk. AXL is a small-cap token. A fall of about 73 percent over a year shows how large the swings can be, and thin liquidity can make exits harder in a sell-off.
Bridge and interoperability risk. Systems that move value between chains have been a frequent target for attacks across the industry. Axelar relies on validators, multiparty signing and correct reading of external chain states. A bug, a compromised validator set or a flaw in a connected chain could affect users.
Demand risk. Users do not have to hold AXL to use the network, so token demand is not guaranteed to rise with network use. The inflationary rewards also add to supply over time.
Competition. Several other interoperability networks compete for the same developers and institutions.
Staking risk. Delegating to a validator that misbehaves can reduce your stake, and unstaking typically involves a waiting period during which you cannot sell.

How to store AXL safely
The safest way to hold AXL for the long term is usually a self-custody wallet. Hardware wallets are a common choice, because the private keys stay on a separate device. Write down your recovery phrase on paper, keep copies in secure places, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support staff.
If you want to stake, use a wallet that supports the Axelar network directly, and read what each validator charges as commission and how reliably it has run. Spreading delegation across more than one validator can reduce the effect of a single failure.
Before every transfer, confirm the network, the token contract and the address. Because AXL exists on many chains, try a small amount first. Be careful with unsolicited links, fake airdrops and approval requests, which are common ways wallets get drained. If you keep tokens on an exchange, remember you rely on that company's security and withdrawal policies, so consider withdrawing amounts you intend to hold.
By the numbers
Axelar in numbers
Axelar (AXL) is ranked #456 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $47.5M and a price of $0.0379 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($47.8M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 12.6% over 7 days, down 28.0% over 30 days, down 75.8% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $2.64, set on Mar 1, 2024.
About 1.25B AXL are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $3.52M, or 7.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
AXL has token contracts on 11 chains we track, including Ethereum, Avalanche, Fantom, Arbitrum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
AXL is linked to Axelar Cross Chain, which we cover in our Cross Chain Bridge rankings. See our Axelar Cross Chain page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

AXL FAQs
What is Axelar (AXL)?
AXL is the token of the Axelar network, a proof-of-stake blockchain that connects other blockchains. It is used for staking to secure the network, for paying network fees and for governance. Users of the network do not have to hold it.
What is the supply of AXL?
The data we have shows no maximum supply for AXL. About 1.25 billion tokens were circulating and about 1.26 billion existed in total as of 2026-11-05. Staking rewards are inflationary, so the total supply can grow over time.
Do I need AXL to use Axelar?
No. The project says users pay gas once in the source-chain token, and the conversion into AXL and destination-chain tokens happens in the background. You mainly need AXL if you want to stake, delegate or take part in governance.
Can you stake AXL?
Holders can delegate AXL to a validator on the Axelar network and receive rewards, minus the validator's commission. Staking usually requires a wallet that supports the Axelar network. Check commission, validator reliability and unstaking waiting times first.
Which blockchains does AXL exist on?
AXL is issued on Ethereum, Avalanche, Fantom, Arbitrum, Moonbeam, Secret, BNB Chain, Osmosis, Polygon, Optimism and Base, in addition to the Axelar network itself. Always confirm which network a token is on before sending it.
What are the main risks of holding AXL?
The main risks are heavy price swings, the security risks common to cross-chain systems, uncertain token demand because users do not need to hold AXL, inflationary rewards and strong competition. Nothing here is financial advice, and you should only risk what you can afford to lose.
What is the market cap of Axelar?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Axelar had a market cap of about $47.5M, ranking #456 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of AXL?
Axelar's all-time high is $2.64, reached on Mar 1, 2024. Its all-time low is $0.0344 (Aug 19, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of AXL?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 1.25B AXL were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
Which blockchains is AXL on?
It has token contracts on Ethereum, Avalanche, Fantom, Arbitrum, Moonbeam, Secret, BNB Chain, Osmosis and 3 more.
