What THORChain and RUNE are

THORChain is a decentralized exchange built as its own blockchain. Its main aim is to let people swap native assets across different blockchains, for example Bitcoin for Ethereum or Solana, without wrapped tokens or a bridge run by a central party. The project describes itself as permissionless, with no account or KYC step at the protocol level.

RUNE is the native token of the THORChain network. According to the project's description, the network connects 13 chains: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, TRON, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Avalanche, Cosmos, Base and THORChain itself. More are expected to be added over time.

As of 2026-11-05, RUNE ranked around 164th by market capitalization, at roughly $209.6M. That puts it among mid-sized to smaller tokens. It is usually grouped with DEX, infrastructure, bridge and layer 1 tokens because it does all three jobs: it runs a chain, hosts swap liquidity and moves value between other networks.

What RUNE is used for

RUNE has several roles inside the protocol, and public sources describe them consistently.

  • Liquidity pairing. Liquidity pools on THORChain pair RUNE with a foreign asset such as BTC or ETH. RUNE sits on one side of every pool, so a swap between two outside assets is routed through RUNE.
  • Securing the network. Node operators must bond RUNE to take part. One source reports a minimum bond of 300,000 RUNE and an average of about 950,000 RUNE per node. Those figures can change, so check current network data. Bonding gives operators something to lose if they misbehave.
  • Fees. Swaps and other network actions incur fees, and RUNE is part of how those fees are paid and distributed to participants.
  • Governance. RUNE is also described as the basis for network governance, with node operators playing a central part in protocol decisions.

The design ties the token to usage: more swap activity means more demand for RUNE in pools and as bonded collateral. That is how the mechanism works, not a promise about price.

Supply and tokenomics

Based on the figures available, RUNE has a capped supply. As of 2026-11-05, about 329.2 million RUNE were circulating, against a total supply of roughly 353.88 million and a listed maximum of about the same amount. That means around 93% of the total supply was circulating.

The fully diluted valuation was about $225.3M, only slightly above the market cap of about $209.6M. A small gap like this suggests limited future dilution from unlocks, though the remaining supply is still subject to the protocol's own rules.

The price was about $0.64 at the time of writing, with roughly $79.0M traded in the previous 24 hours. The token was up about 5.6% over seven days and down about 12.5% over a year. Its all-time high was about $20.87 on 2018-05-18 in the data feed's records, listed as 2021-05-18, and its all-time low was about $0.0085 on 2019-09-27.

How new RUNE reaches the market, and how rewards are paid to node operators and liquidity providers, is set by the protocol. Check the project's current documentation for the latest rules rather than relying on a third-party summary.

Chains, holding and trading

Per our data, RUNE is the native token of the Thorchain chain and is issued only there. THORChain is a proof-of-stake style network in which node operators bond RUNE, and it is built with Cosmos technology, which is why Cosmos is among the supported chains.

To hold RUNE directly, you need a wallet that supports the THORChain network. Support varies by wallet, so confirm that the wallet lists THORChain RUNE before sending anything to it.

RUNE is traded on a number of centralized exchanges, and it can also be obtained through THORChain's own swap routes, where users swap other native assets into RUNE. Versions of RUNE have existed on other networks in the past, so always confirm which network a deposit address belongs to. Sending tokens over the wrong network is a common and often unrecoverable mistake.

Liquidity providers can also deposit RUNE alongside another asset in a pool. Doing so is a separate activity from simply holding the token, with its own risks, covered below.

History and notable events

THORChain's price history in our data starts in 2019, and the token reached its all-time high in May 2021, during the broader market peak of that year. Since then it has traded far below that level.

The network moved from an earlier form of RUNE to a native token on its own chain, and the mainnet matured through 2021. That period also included security incidents. Publicly reported exploits hit the protocol in 2021 and caused losses for users and liquidity providers, and the project has since changed parts of its design. Read primary sources for exact dates and amounts rather than relying on summaries.

THORChain has also been in the news because its permissionless design means anyone can route swaps through it, including people moving stolen funds. Supporters point to the protocol's neutrality, while critics say it makes laundering easier. The debate shows that decentralization and compliance pressures remain unsettled around the project.

The token appears in the portfolios of several well-known crypto investment firms, according to category listings. That is a data point about history, not a statement of endorsement.

Risks to understand

RUNE carries the risks of any small-cap crypto token, plus some specific to its design.

  • Smart contract and protocol risk. THORChain has a complex architecture that moves real assets across many chains. Past exploits show the stakes. New chain integrations add new code and new attack surface.
  • Liquidity pool risk. Providing RUNE and another asset to a pool exposes you to impermanent loss, price swings in both assets and protocol-level incidents.
  • Node and validator risk. Bonded RUNE can be penalized if a node misbehaves or goes offline. Anyone delegating or bonding should understand the slashing and churn rules.
  • Regulatory and reputational risk. The no-KYC, permissionless model and its use by illicit actors may attract regulatory scrutiny, which could affect front-ends, exchanges and listings.
  • Market risk. The token is about 99% below its 2021 peak, and daily volume can shift sharply. Recent weekly gains do not predict future moves.

Nothing here is financial advice. Only commit money you can afford to lose, and read the project's own documentation first.

How to store RUNE safely

Safe storage starts with deciding who holds the keys. Tokens left on an exchange are controlled by that exchange. Tokens in a self-custody wallet are controlled by you, along with the responsibility for backing them up.

If you self-custody RUNE, use a wallet that explicitly supports the THORChain network. Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, keep it offline, and never type it into a website, chat or support form. Nobody legitimate will ask for it. Consider a hardware wallet for larger amounts if it supports THORChain, and check this before buying one.

Before a large transfer, send a small test amount and confirm it arrives. Double-check the network and address, since sending to the wrong network can mean permanent loss. Bookmark official sites rather than following links in messages, and be cautious of fake swap interfaces and airdrop claims, which are common phishing tactics.

If you bond RUNE to a node or add it to a liquidity pool, remember the funds are no longer simply sitting in your wallet. Understand the lock-up, withdrawal and penalty rules before you commit.

By the numbers

THORChain in numbers

THORChain (RUNE) is ranked #163 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $202M and a price of $0.6124 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $217M, so roughly 93% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 9.2% over 7 days, down 17.0% over 30 days, down 18.2% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $20.87, set on May 18, 2021.

About 329.22M RUNE are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 353.87M (93% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $312M, or 155% of its market cap: very high turnover.

RUNE is the native token of THORChain. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

RUNE is linked to Thorchain, which we cover in our DEXes rankings. See our Thorchain page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
