What Compound (COMP) is

Compound (COMP) is the governance token of the Compound lending protocol, a set of smart contracts where people supply crypto assets to earn interest and others borrow against collateral. Interest rates are set by algorithms based on how much of each asset is lent out, not by a company or a bank.

COMP does not move money in or out of the lending markets. Its job is to decide how the protocol is configured. Holders can vote on changes, or hand their voting power to someone else, which is called delegation. Anyone can receive delegated votes, so a person can take part in governance without owning COMP themselves.

Compound is one of the older DeFi lending projects, and its design influenced many later money markets. The current version on our site, Compound V3, lets users supply a base asset for yield or borrow it against collateral, across Ethereum and several other chains. COMP sits above that machinery as the token that steers it.

At the time of writing, COMP ranks about 168th by market capitalization, so it is a mid-sized asset in the broader market.

What COMP is used for

The main use of COMP is governance. The project description gives the key rules: holders can delegate voting rights to any address, including their own wallet, another user, an application or a DeFi specialist. An address that has 1% of COMP delegated to it can submit a governance proposal.

Proposals are sets of actions the protocol administrator is able to carry out. Examples named in the project description include adding support for a new asset, changing an asset's collateral factor, changing a market's interest rate model, or altering other protocol parameters. These choices shape how much risk the lending markets take on.

COMP has also been used as an incentive. Compound distributed it to users of the protocol, and some markets have offered COMP rewards for supplying or borrowing. The details differ by market and version, so check the current rules in the app before assuming any reward applies.

COMP is not a claim on protocol revenue in any guaranteed form, and holding it does not by itself earn interest. Its value rests on the influence it gives and on market demand.

Supply and tokenomics

The data lists a maximum supply of 10,000,000 COMP, and the circulating and total supply are the same figure, so the whole fixed supply is counted as circulating. That means the fully diluted valuation equals the market cap, which was about $201.9M as of 2026-11-05.

At that date the price was about $20.19, with roughly $11.2M traded over the previous 24 hours. Over seven days the price had moved about -4.8%, and over one year about -34.1%.

For context, the all-time high was about $854.45 on 2021-05-11, and the all-time low in the data was about $14.86 on 2026-06-25. The token therefore trades far below its peak and near the bottom of its range.

A capped supply means no new COMP can be minted beyond the limit, so dilution from new issuance is not a concern. It does not remove the effect of how the tokens are spread among holders. Large holders and delegates carry a lot of voting weight, which matters for governance. We do not have verified allocation percentages here, so check the protocol's own documentation for the distribution history.

Chains, holding and trading

COMP started on Ethereum, and Ethereum remains the home of its governance. The data also lists versions issued on BNB Chain, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Polygon, Harmony and Near. COMP is not the native token of any chain, so you still need each network's own gas token to move it.

Many of those non-Ethereum versions are bridged or wrapped representations rather than the original token. They can differ in liquidity, in the bridge's security model and in whether they carry voting rights. Before using one, confirm which contract address you are dealing with and how it relates to the Ethereum token.

You can hold COMP in any wallet that supports the relevant network, whether a browser wallet, a mobile wallet or a hardware device. It trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges through automated market makers. Liquidity is usually deepest for the Ethereum version.

If you want to vote or delegate, do so with the token on Ethereum, using the governance interface the protocol points to. Delegation is a setting stored on-chain and does not move your tokens.

History and notable events

COMP became widely known in 2020, when Compound began distributing it to protocol users. That helped popularize the idea of rewarding usage with governance tokens, often called liquidity mining or yield farming, and it is why the token appears in yield farming categories. Our data does not give an exact launch date, so we leave it there.

The price peaked in May 2021 during the broader market high, and has since fallen well below that level. The data shows a new all-time low in June 2026.

Governance has had notable moments. In 2021, a faulty upgrade proposal led to more COMP being sent out to users than intended, showing that on-chain governance can carry real operational risk. In 2024, a vote on a proposal tied to treasury funds prompted public debate about how much influence a small group of large holders and delegates can have. Both episodes are discussed in public community forums.

The protocol has since moved on to Compound V3, which is structured differently from the first version, with a single borrowable base asset per market and a separate set of collateral assets.

Risks to understand

The first risk is price. COMP has fallen sharply from its peak and was down about a third over the year to 2026-11-05. Prices can move quickly in either direction, and nothing here is a forecast or advice to buy or sell.

Second is smart contract risk. Lending protocols hold large pools of user funds, and bugs in code or in upgrade proposals can cause losses. Audits reduce this risk but do not remove it.

Third is governance risk. Voting power can be concentrated, delegates may not act in the interest of smaller holders, and proposals can be technical enough that few people read them closely. A passed proposal can change collateral rules or interest models.

Fourth is market risk in the lending markets themselves. Collateral prices, oracle failures and sudden liquidations can affect users of Compound, and sometimes sentiment toward the token.

Fifth is bridge and wrapper risk on non-Ethereum versions, where the token depends on another system working correctly. Finally, liquidity is moderate, so large trades may move the price on smaller venues.

How to store COMP safely

Because COMP is a standard token, safe storage mostly comes down to good wallet habits. A hardware wallet is a common choice for amounts you do not plan to move often, because the private keys stay on the device. Write down your recovery phrase offline and never type it into a website or share it with anyone.

Before adding the token, verify the contract address from the protocol's own documentation, since fake tokens with the same name exist. Be careful with token approvals. Granting an app unlimited spending permission can be abused if that app is compromised, so review and revoke approvals you no longer need.

If you delegate votes, remember that delegation does not give the delegate custody of your tokens. You can change the delegate at any time, though that is an on-chain transaction with a fee.

If you hold a bridged version on another chain, keep track of which network it is on. Sending tokens to the wrong network or the wrong address can be irreversible. Use a small test transfer first when moving a larger amount.

By the numbers

Compound in numbers

Compound (COMP) is ranked #167 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $200M and a price of $20.01 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($200M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 0.9% over 7 days, down 14.8% over 30 days, down 37.5% over the past year. It trades about 98% below its all-time high of $854.45, set on May 11, 2021.

About 10M COMP are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10M (100% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $12.5M, or 6.3% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

COMP has token contracts on 8 chains we track, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Base, Arbitrum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

COMP is linked to Compound V3, which we cover in our Lending rankings. See our Compound V3 page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

COMP FAQs

What is COMP used for?

COMP lets holders vote on changes to the Compound lending protocol, such as which assets are supported, collateral factors and interest rate models. Holders can also delegate their voting power to another address. Some markets have also paid COMP as an incentive.

What is the total supply of COMP?

The data lists a maximum, total and circulating supply of 10,000,000 COMP. Because the whole supply is counted as circulating, the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap.

Do I need COMP to take part in Compound governance?

No. You can delegate your votes to your own address or to someone else, and an address that receives delegation can vote without owning COMP. Submitting a proposal requires 1% of COMP delegated to your address.

Does holding COMP earn interest?

No. Holding COMP does not earn interest by itself. Interest comes from supplying assets to the lending markets, and any COMP rewards depend on the specific market and its current settings.

Which blockchains is COMP on?

COMP started on Ethereum, and the data lists versions on BNB Chain, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Polygon, Harmony and Near. Many of these may be bridged versions, so check the contract and bridge before using one.

How does the current COMP price compare with its peak?

At the time of writing, COMP traded far below its all-time high of about $854.45 from 2021-05-11. The price was about $20.19 as of 2026-11-05, near the all-time low of about $14.86 set in June 2026. This is not a prediction or advice.

What is the market cap of Compound?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Compound had a market cap of about $200M, ranking #167 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of COMP?

Compound's all-time high is $854.45, reached on May 11, 2021. Its all-time low is $14.86 (Jun 25, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of COMP?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 10M COMP were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 10M.
