What Morpho and the MORPHO token are

MORPHO is the governance token of the Morpho protocol, a decentralized lending platform. Morpho lets people lend and borrow crypto without a central company holding their funds. Lenders deposit assets into Morpho Vaults, which are noncustodial vaults built to optimize yield for depositors. Borrowers take loans directly from Morpho Markets, which are isolated lending markets, so the risk in one market is kept apart from the others.

The protocol is described by its team as open and permissionless. Developers and businesses can create their own markets, curate vaults and build applications on top of the same infrastructure. The core contracts are described as immutable, and day-to-day operations are kept governance-minimized, meaning there are few levers that a vote can pull.

The MORPHO token is separate from the lending activity itself. You do not need to hold it to deposit into a vault or to borrow. Its role sits at the level of how the protocol is directed over time, which is why it is classed as a DeFi and lending-and-borrowing token.

What the token is used for

Publicly, MORPHO is described as a governance token. Holders can take part in votes on key decisions about the Morpho protocol, which is the main stated purpose in the sources we reviewed. In plain terms, it gives holders a say in how the system develops.

Because Morpho aims to minimize governance, the scope of those decisions is narrower than in many other DeFi projects. The immutable design of the core contracts means that holders cannot simply rewrite how lending markets work. What governance can still touch is the surrounding set of choices, such as how the ecosystem is organized and how protocol-level parameters are managed.

We have not seen a clear public statement of other uses, such as fee sharing or staking rewards, in the material provided, so we will not describe any here. Anyone considering the token should read the current governance documentation from the Morpho team to see exactly which rights it carries today and whether those rights have changed.

Supply and tokenomics

MORPHO has a maximum and total supply of 1 billion tokens, so the supply is capped at that figure. As of 2026-11-05, about 703.6 million tokens were in circulation, which is roughly 70 percent of the total. The rest is not yet in circulation, which usually means it is locked, vested or held in reserve under a schedule set by the project.

At the time of writing, the price was about $2.22. That put the market capitalization at about $1.56 billion and the fully diluted valuation, which assumes all 1 billion tokens exist, at about $2.22 billion. The token ranked around 57th by market cap. Trading volume over the previous 24 hours was about $18.1 million.

The gap between market cap and fully diluted value matters because tokens that are not yet circulating can enter the market later. We do not have the detailed allocation split or unlock schedule in our data, so check the official Morpho documentation for how tokens are divided between the community, the team, investors and the treasury.

Chains and how it is held and traded

MORPHO is issued on several networks: Ethereum, Base, Katana and Arbitrum. It is not the native gas token of any chain, so you pay network fees in that chain's own coin, such as ETH on Ethereum, rather than in MORPHO.

The token is available on centralized exchanges and through decentralized exchanges on the networks above. Some retail platforms have also added it to their trading menus. Liquidity differs from venue to venue, and the same token can trade at slightly different prices across chains and platforms.

If you move MORPHO between chains, use a bridge or exchange route that supports the specific network, and confirm the contract address from the project's official channels before sending anything. Tokens on one chain cannot be sent to an address on another chain and be expected to arrive. A small test transfer is a common precaution when moving funds for the first time.

History and notable events

Morpho grew as a lending layer built on Ethereum, and it later expanded to Base and other networks. The protocol is backed by well-known crypto investors, and the token's market listings tag it as part of the Coinbase Ventures and Pantera Capital portfolios. A search result from late 2025 also says Coinbase's crypto-backed loans are powered by Morpho, with a stated figure of about $960 million in active loans, though we have not verified that number independently.

On the price side, the token's recorded all-time high was about $4.17 on 2025-01-17. Its all-time low was about $0.71 on 2024-11-24. As of 2026-11-05 it was up about 3.2 percent over seven days and about 40 percent over one year, but those moves can reverse and say nothing about what comes next.

The data we have does not give a precise token launch date, so we leave that out here. The project's official blog and governance forum are the best places to confirm the timeline of the token's introduction and any later changes.

Risks to understand

Holding MORPHO carries market risk. The price fell and rose sharply within the span between its low and high, and a token of this size can move quickly on news or broader market shifts. Daily trading volume is modest relative to the market cap, so large orders can move the price.

There is also smart-contract risk. Morpho's contracts are designed to be simple and immutable, which can reduce some attack surface, but any DeFi code can contain bugs. Vaults are run by curators who choose which markets to lend into, so the quality of a vault depends on their risk choices, and losses in an underlying market can reach depositors. Oracle failures and sudden collateral price drops are further lending risks.

Supply risk applies as well, since about 30 percent of the total supply was not circulating at the time of writing, and future unlocks could add selling pressure. Finally, governance rights are only as meaningful as the protocol's design allows, and the minimal-governance approach limits what a vote can change. None of this is investment advice.

How to store it safely

For long-term holding, a self-custody wallet gives you control of your own keys. A hardware wallet is the usual choice for larger amounts, because the private keys stay on a separate device. Write down the recovery phrase offline and never type it into a website or share it with anyone.

Because MORPHO exists on multiple chains, make sure your wallet is set to the right network and that you have a little of the native coin for fees. Check the token contract address against the project's official sources, since fake tokens with the same name are common.

If you connect a wallet to Morpho or a vault, review each approval and the amount you are permitting. Revoking unused token approvals reduces exposure. Consider keeping a separate wallet for DeFi activity and a more protected one for long-term holdings. Be wary of unsolicited messages about airdrops or support, which are a frequent route for theft.

By the numbers

Morpho in numbers

Morpho (MORPHO) is ranked #61 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.47B and a price of $2.09 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $2.09B, so roughly 70% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was up 1.1% over 7 days, down 19.1% over 30 days, up 23.9% over the past year. It trades about 50% below its all-time high of $4.17, set on Jan 17, 2025.

About 703.6M MORPHO are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 1B (70% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $20.6M, or 1.4% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

MORPHO has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including Ethereum, Base, Katana, Arbitrum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

MORPHO is linked to Morpho, which we cover in our Lending rankings. See our Morpho page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
