What Aave and the AAVE token are

Aave is a decentralized money market. People supply crypto assets to shared liquidity pools and earn interest, while others borrow from those pools by posting different assets as collateral. AAVE is the protocol's native token, and it is separate from the assets users lend and borrow.

Our site tracks the current version, Aave V3, a non-custodial lending protocol that runs on 21 chains. Non-custodial means deposits sit in smart contracts rather than with a company that holds them for you. Borrowing is generally over-collateralized, so a borrower locks up more value than they take out, and positions that fall below safety thresholds can be liquidated by other users. The protocol also supports flash loans, which are loans that must be borrowed and repaid within a single transaction.

You do not need to hold AAVE to lend or borrow on the protocol. The token sits alongside the lending markets as a governance and coordination asset. As of 2026-11-05, AAVE ranks about 46th by market capitalization, at roughly $2.02 billion.

What AAVE is used for

The best-documented use of AAVE is governance. Token holders can vote on Aave Improvement Proposals, usually shortened to AIPs, which shape the protocol's direction. Proposals can cover things like which assets are supported, risk settings for each market, and how the protocol's treasury is used. Voting weight follows token holdings, and holders can generally delegate their voting power to another address if they do not want to follow every proposal.

AAVE has also been tied to the protocol's safety design. Public descriptions mention a backstop system in which the community supports the protocol's liquidity in the event of a shortfall, and recent write-ups refer to an umbrella system for this purpose. The exact mechanics, rewards and risks of staking have changed over time, so check the current governance documentation before assuming how it works today.

AAVE is not a gas token on any network, and it is not needed to pay fees on the lending markets. Its role is about influence over a lending protocol rather than access to it. That distinction matters when comparing it with tokens that power a blockchain directly.

Supply and tokenomics

AAVE has a fixed maximum supply of 16,000,000 tokens. According to the data we hold, the total supply is also 16,000,000, and about 15.44 million were circulating as of 2026-11-05. That leaves only a small gap between circulating supply and the cap, which is why the fully diluted valuation of about $2.09 billion sits close to the market capitalization of about $2.02 billion.

At the time of writing, the price was about $130.54, with roughly $225.3 million traded over 24 hours. The price was close to flat over seven days, down about 0.07 percent, and down about 32 percent over one year. For context, the all-time high was about $661.69 on 2021-05-18, and the all-time low was about $26.02 on 2020-11-05. These figures move constantly and are not a forecast.

Our data does not break down how the supply was originally allocated or how any treasury or incentive programs are scheduled, so we avoid guessing. For distribution and emission details, read the project's own governance forum and documentation.

Chains and how it is held and traded

AAVE is issued on many networks. Our data lists Ethereum, Near, Optimism, Polygon, Harmony, Fantom, Arbitrum, Base, Avalanche, Solana, Heco and BNB Chain. It is not the native token of any chain, so you cannot use it to pay network fees. Ethereum is the main home for the original token, and versions on other networks are often bridged or wrapped representations, which carry extra risk because they depend on the bridge that created them.

Holding AAVE works like holding any other token. You keep it in a self-custody wallet that supports the relevant network, or leave it with an exchange. Trading usually takes place on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges, where you swap from another token using your wallet. Because several versions exist, always confirm which network and contract your wallet or exchange is using before you send anything.

Some of the listed networks are older or have seen far less activity than they once did. Check whether a given chain is still actively supported before relying on AAVE there. Sending a token to the wrong network can mean permanent loss.

History and notable events

Aave began under a different name. Public sources describe it as originally launched as ETHLend, a lending project that later became Aave. Our data does not give an exact launch date for the AAVE token, so we do not state one. The earlier project used a separate token called LEND, and holders moved to AAVE when the project rebranded.

The price history shows how strongly the token follows the wider crypto market. The all-time low of about $26.02 was recorded on 2020-11-05, and the all-time high of about $661.69 followed on 2021-05-18. The token has since traded far below that peak, and it was down about 32 percent over the year to 2026-11-05.

On the product side, Aave became known for popularizing flash loans and for expanding its lending markets across many networks. Aave V3 is now the version we track, and it is live on 21 chains. A long record is not a guarantee of safety, but it does mean the contracts have been used and scrutinized for years. For the latest upgrades and governance decisions, the official forum is the primary source.

Risks to understand

AAVE carries the usual risks of a DeFi token, plus some specific to lending.

Smart contract risk. The protocol runs on code. Audits and years of operation reduce the chance of a serious bug but cannot remove it.

Market and liquidation risk. If you borrow on Aave, a sharp fall in your collateral's price can trigger liquidation, and you lose part of that collateral. Price feeds, known as oracles, are another point of dependence, as are the stablecoins and other assets listed on the markets.

Governance risk. Voting power follows token balances, so large holders can carry a lot of influence. Decisions about risk settings can affect every user of the protocol.

Bridge and multi-chain risk. Versions of AAVE on other networks may rely on bridges, which have been a frequent target of attacks across crypto.

Price and regulatory risk. The token is volatile and has fallen well below its 2021 peak. Rules for DeFi vary by country and can change.

How to store AAVE safely

For long-term holding, a hardware wallet that keeps your private keys offline is the common choice. Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it somewhere private, and never type it into a website, chat or app that asks for it. Anyone who has the phrase controls your tokens.

Before sending AAVE, confirm the network and the token contract address from an official source, because look-alike tokens and fake sites are common. Send a small test amount first if you are moving a larger sum. Bridged versions on other chains deserve extra checking.

If you use your wallet with Aave itself or with other dApps, remember that approving a contract lets it move tokens on your behalf. Review the permissions you grant, and revoke old approvals you no longer need. Consider keeping a separate wallet for active DeFi use and another for long-term holdings. If you borrow, watch your health factor, which shows how close a position is to liquidation. Be careful with unsolicited messages offering support, since impersonators often target DeFi users.
