NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain that runs on proof of stake and supports smart contracts. Its Nightshade sharding design splits the network's workload across parallel shards, so capacity can grow without every node processing every transaction. NEAR is not natively EVM-based, though Aurora provides an EVM environment on top of it. The network also offers human-readable account names, which make addresses easier to use than long hex strings.
