What Tether (USDT) is
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin, a crypto token designed to trade close to one U.S. dollar. Each unit is meant to be redeemable for a dollar, so holders can keep value in a form that moves on blockchains without the price swings of assets like bitcoin or ether.
The token is issued by Tether Limited. Public descriptions of the company say it is governed by the laws of the British Virgin Islands and is incorporated in Hong Kong. Tether has long said the coin is backed by reserves, and the idea is that cash and similar assets held by the issuer stand behind the tokens in circulation.
USDT is not a decentralized coin in the way bitcoin is. It depends on a single company to issue, hold reserves, and honor redemptions. That makes it a claim on an issuer rather than a self-contained network asset, and it is the main thing to understand before using it. At the time of writing it ranks third by market capitalization, behind only a small number of other assets.
What USDT is used for
The main use of USDT is as a dollar substitute inside crypto markets. Traders use it to move in and out of other tokens without cashing out to a bank, and many exchanges list trading pairs quoted in USDT rather than in dollars. That is why trading volume for the token is so high: about $56.69B over 24 hours as of 2026-11-05.
Other common uses include:
- Parking funds between trades during volatile periods.
- Sending value across borders, since a transfer on a blockchain can settle faster and cost less than many bank wires.
- Holding a dollar-denominated balance in places where access to dollars is limited.
- Supplying liquidity or posting collateral in decentralized finance (DeFi) apps, where stablecoins are widely used for lending, borrowing and swaps.
The project's own description also says the token helps exchanges that struggle with banking relationships to offer dollar-like trading. USDT does not pay interest by itself, and it has no governance or staking function.
Supply and tokenomics
USDT has no fixed maximum supply, because new tokens are created when customers deposit funds with the issuer and tokens are removed when they are redeemed. Supply therefore follows demand rather than a preset schedule.
As of 2026-11-05, about 178.37 billion USDT were in circulation, with a total supply of about 183.84 billion. Market capitalization was about $178.27B, and fully diluted value was about $183.73B. The price was about $0.9994, which is very close to its one-dollar target.
The historical price range looks odd for a stablecoin. The data shows an all-time high of about $1.32 in July 2018 and an all-time low of about $0.57 in March 2015. Those extremes come from thin trading on a few venues and are not typical of how the token trades today. Over the past year the price changed by roughly negative 0.06 percent, which is the kind of tiny drift you would expect from a coin built to hold a peg.
Chains and how it is held or traded
USDT is issued on many blockchains rather than on one native network. The data lists Ethereum, Tron, Solana, TON, Avalanche, Aptos, Celo, Kaia, Kava, Tezos and Near. Each version is a separate token on its own chain, and they are meant to be equal in value.
This matters in practice. An address that accepts USDT on one network cannot receive it from another network, and sending to the wrong network can cause funds to be lost or delayed. Always confirm which network a recipient or exchange expects before sending.
Most people get USDT through a centralized exchange, where it is the quote currency for many markets. It can also be swapped on decentralized exchanges and held in a self-custody wallet that supports the chosen chain. Fees and speed vary by network, which is a big reason that some users prefer chains with low transfer costs for everyday payments. Some wallets also let you hold the token on several chains within one app.
History and notable events
Tether has existed for years and grew alongside the exchange business that relied on it. The project description notes its close ties to the exchange Bitfinex, whose operators have faced accusations over price manipulation of bitcoin and of Tether itself. Those accusations are part of the public record around the token, and the issuer has disputed claims of this kind.
The other recurring theme in its history is how well it is backed. Tether has said the coin is fully backed, but questions about the exact makeup of its reserves and how transparent they are have come up repeatedly over the years. The launch date is not given in the data used here, so it is not stated.
In recent years the token has become a central piece of crypto market infrastructure, and its size is now far larger than in its early period. That scale is also why regulators and market watchers pay close attention to it. Readers who want the current details should check the issuer's own reserve reports and independent coverage.
Risks
A stablecoin's main risk is losing its peg. USDT can trade below one dollar if people doubt the reserves or fear they cannot redeem. Past depegs have generally been brief, but they are possible.
Other risks to keep in mind:
- Issuer risk. You rely on Tether Limited to hold assets and honor redemptions. Direct redemption has been limited to certain customers, so most holders sell on the market instead.
- Transparency and regulation. Reserve disclosures have been debated, and rules for stablecoins differ by country and may change.
- Freezing. The issuer can block specific addresses, so tokens are not fully censorship-resistant.
- Network and scam risk. Sending on the wrong chain, using fake tokens with similar names, or falling for phishing can all lead to losses.
- No yield or protection. Holding USDT is not a bank deposit and carries no deposit insurance.
This is general information, not financial advice.
How to store USDT safely
For small amounts used in active trading, an exchange account can be convenient, but funds there are held by the platform. For larger or longer-term balances, a self-custody wallet gives you control of the keys. Hardware wallets that support the chain you use add another layer of protection by keeping keys offline.
Good habits include:
- Write down your recovery phrase on paper and keep it offline. Never share it or type it into a website.
- Send a small test transfer first, and double-check the address and the network.
- Make sure you are using the genuine token contract, since copycat tokens exist.
- Review and revoke token approvals you no longer need when using DeFi apps.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for exchange accounts, preferably with an authenticator app instead of SMS.
Because the token exists on many chains, keep a little of that chain's native coin for transaction fees, or a transfer may be stuck.
By the numbers
Tether in numbers
Tether (USDT) is ranked #3 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $178B and a price of $0.9990 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($183B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was up 0.0% over 7 days, down 0.1% over 30 days, down 0.1% over the past year. It trades about 24% below its all-time high of $1.32, set on Jul 23, 2018.
About 177.75B USDT are in circulation, from a total supply of 183.21B. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $69.8B, or 39% of its market cap: very high turnover.
USDT has token contracts on 11 chains we track, including Ethereum, Celo, Kaia, Solana. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

USDT FAQs
Is USDT always worth one dollar?
USDT is designed to track one U.S. dollar and trades close to that level. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.9994. It is a stablecoin, so small deviations are normal and larger ones can signal stress.
Who issues Tether?
Tether Limited issues the token. Public descriptions say it is governed by British Virgin Islands law and incorporated in Hong Kong. Holders depend on this company for reserves and redemptions.
Which blockchains support USDT?
USDT is issued on many networks, including Ethereum, Tron, Solana, TON, Avalanche, Aptos, Celo, Kaia, Kava, Tezos and Near. Each version is a separate token, so match the network when sending funds.

Does USDT earn interest?
Not by itself. USDT does not pay interest or rewards just for being held. Any yield comes from third-party platforms or DeFi apps, which carry their own risks.
What is the market cap of Tether?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Tether had a market cap of about $178B, ranking #3 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
