What PayPal USD is

PayPal USD (PYUSD) is a US dollar stablecoin, a crypto token designed to stay worth one dollar. It is issued by Paxos Trust Company, a regulated trust company, and is branded and distributed through PayPal and Venmo. PayPal describes it as backed by US dollar deposits, short-term US Treasuries and similar cash equivalents, and redeemable 1:1 for US dollars.

That structure makes PYUSD a fiat-backed, centralized stablecoin. Value does not come from an algorithm or from market demand for a volatile asset. It comes from reserves held by the issuer and from the ability to exchange the token for dollars at par. The token is not a share in PayPal and carries no ownership or voting rights.

As of 2026-11-05, the data shows a price of about $1.00 and a market cap of roughly $2.70B, which put it around rank 37 by market cap. Those figures change constantly, so treat them as a snapshot.

What PYUSD is used for

The main purpose is payments and money movement. PayPal positions PYUSD as a way to send and receive dollar-denominated value with faster settlement and, it says, lower cost than traditional payment methods. A March 2026 announcement said PayPal was bringing PYUSD to users across around 70 markets, though readers should check current availability for their own country and account type.

Inside PayPal and Venmo, users can buy and sell PYUSD at one dollar per token, and they can transfer it to compatible external wallets where supported. PayPal has also offered a rewards program for PYUSD held in its own accounts. Per the program's terms, only PYUSD held at PayPal counts toward a customer's balance, and there is no fee to participate. Terms can change, so check the current rules.

Outside PayPal, PYUSD can serve like other dollar stablecoins: as a trading pair, a store of dollar value between trades, or collateral in some decentralized finance apps, depending on which apps list it.

Supply and tokenomics

PYUSD has no fixed maximum supply. Supply expands when users or partners deposit dollars with the issuer and new tokens are minted, and it shrinks when tokens are redeemed and burned. The data shows about 2.70 billion tokens in circulation as of 2026-11-05, equal to total supply, so fully diluted value matches market cap at about $2.70B.

Because it is a stablecoin, there is no inflation schedule, halving or staking-style emission. The meaningful tokenomics questions are about the reserves: what assets back the tokens, how often they are attested or audited, and who can redeem at par. Paxos publishes reserve information, and readers who want detail should read the issuer's latest reports rather than rely on a summary like this one.

Trading volume was about $43.1M over 24 hours in the data, small relative to the market cap, which reflects that much of the supply may sit in accounts and wallets rather than turning over daily.

Chains and how it is held and traded

PYUSD is issued on several networks. The data lists Ethereum, Solana, Stellar, Polygon, Arbitrum, Ink and X Layer. It is not the native coin of any chain, so you need the native token of the network you use, such as ETH or SOL, to pay transaction fees in most cases.

The same token on different chains is not interchangeable by default. Sending PYUSD on one network to an address expecting another can result in lost funds, so check the network before every transfer. Some transfers between chains may be handled by the issuer or by supported bridging tools, depending on current support.

Most people hold PYUSD in one of two ways: inside a PayPal or Venmo account, where the company holds it for them, or in a self-custody wallet that supports the chosen network. It can also be traded on exchanges that list it, usually against other stablecoins or major assets.

History and notable events

PayPal announced PYUSD in 2023, with Paxos as issuer, and the data shows its all-time high price of about $1.021 on 2023-10-23. The recorded low is roughly $0.959 on 2024-12-05. Both are small moves from one dollar, which is typical for a stablecoin that briefly trades off its peg on thin markets.

Over time the token expanded beyond Ethereum to additional chains, including Solana, which had its own announcement in May 2024. The data does not give a launch date, so this page does not state one. Its recent price changes over seven days and one year are tiny, around a few hundredths of a percent, consistent with a stable peg.

Risks to understand

Stablecoins carry risks that differ from those of volatile coins:

  • Issuer and reserve risk. The peg depends on the reserves being real, liquid and accessible. Failures at the issuer, its banks or custodians could affect redemption.
  • Regulatory risk. Stablecoin rules are changing in the US and elsewhere, and could change who can issue, hold or earn rewards on them.
  • Centralization. As a centralized token, the issuer can typically freeze or block addresses to comply with legal requirements.
  • Depeg risk. Market prices can slip below one dollar during stress, even if redemption at par remains available to eligible parties.
  • Access limits. Direct redemption is generally through approved channels, so ordinary holders may depend on PayPal, Venmo or an exchange.
  • Operational risk. Wrong-network transfers, phishing and smart contract problems in apps that use the token can cause losses.

How to store it safely

If you hold PYUSD on PayPal or Venmo, secure the account with a strong unique password, two-factor authentication and up-to-date recovery details. Be cautious of messages asking you to verify your account or move funds, since impersonation scams are common.

For self-custody, use a reputable wallet that supports the specific network, and write down the recovery phrase offline. Never share it or type it into a website. A hardware wallet adds protection for larger balances.

Before a large transfer, send a small test amount and confirm the network, address and token contract. Keep a small balance of the chain's native token for fees. Remember that holding the token in a company account means the company controls the keys, while self-custody means you carry responsibility for them.

By the numbers

PayPal USD in numbers

PayPal USD (PYUSD) is ranked #37 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $2.70B and a price of $1.00 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($2.70B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 0.1% over 7 days, up 0.1% over 30 days, up 0.0% over the past year. It trades about 2% below its all-time high of $1.02, set on Oct 23, 2023.

About 2.7B PYUSD are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $49.1M, or 1.8% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

PYUSD has token contracts on 7 chains we track, including Ethereum, Ink, Solana, Stellar. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
