What BNB is

BNB is the native token of BNB Chain, a group of blockchain networks that includes a smart contract platform, a Layer 2 scaling network and a decentralized data storage network. It is also tied to Binance, the exchange that launched it in 2017, where it has historically been used to get lower trading fees.

The token sits in two categories at once. It is a Layer 1 token, because it pays for activity on its own chain. It is also an exchange token, because part of its demand comes from a centralized trading platform. At the time of writing, BNB ranks about fourth by market capitalization, at roughly $93.34B as of 2026-11-05.

The BNB Chain network runs on a Proof of Staked Authority consensus mechanism. It is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so apps and wallets built for Ethereum can usually be adapted to it with little change. That compatibility is one reason many DeFi apps, games and payment tools have been deployed on BNB Chain.

What BNB is used for

BNB has several jobs, and which one matters depends on where you use it.

  • Gas fees: BNB pays for transactions and smart contract deployment on BNB Smart Chain and on the opBNB Layer 2 network. Anyone sending tokens or using a dApp there needs a small balance of BNB.
  • Staking: Holders can stake or delegate BNB to validators and earn staking rewards. Validators are chosen based on how much BNB is staked or delegated to them.
  • Governance: Holders can vote on technical upgrades and economic changes to the network.
  • Exchange perks: On Binance, holding or paying fees in BNB has offered tiered discounts. The terms are set by the exchange and can change, so check current rules directly.
  • General payments and collateral: Some apps and services accept BNB for payments, and DeFi lending protocols on the chain accept it as collateral.

These uses create steady practical demand for the token, but they do not guarantee anything about its price. Gas needs are small per transaction, and staking and governance depend on how much activity the network sees.

Supply and tokenomics

BNB has a maximum supply of 200 million tokens. At the time of writing, about 131.5 million are in circulation, and the total supply equals the circulating figure. Because the total matches the circulating amount, the fully diluted valuation is the same as the market cap, about $93.34B as of 2026-11-05. The gap between 131.5 million and 200 million reflects tokens that were destroyed rather than tokens waiting to be released.

The original allocation, according to the project description, gave 50% of the 200 million supply to the public, 40% to the founding team and 10% to angel investors.

To reduce supply over time, the project uses what it describes as a programmatic dual-burn approach. One part destroys a portion of fees in real time as the network is used. The other is a quarterly buyback and burn, which permanently removes tokens from circulation. Burns make the supply shrink toward a lower ceiling, but they do not by themselves set the price. Demand, market conditions and network activity matter far more in the short run.

Chains, holding and trading

BNB began as a token on Ethereum, and Ethereum is still listed as a chain where a version of it was issued. It later moved to its own network, and today it is the native asset of BNB Chain. The network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, which means common Ethereum-style wallets can connect to it once the network settings are added.

Per the project description, the network is secured by 21 active validators, called the Cabinet, which produce blocks about every 3 seconds. Validators are elected daily by the amount of BNB staked or delegated to them. The system uses fast finality and slashing penalties to discourage misbehavior.

In general terms, people hold BNB in one of two ways. They can keep it on an exchange, which is simple but means the exchange controls the keys. Or they can hold it in a self-custody wallet and use it on-chain for fees, staking or apps. BNB trades on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on the chain. About $922.1M changed hands over 24 hours as of 2026-11-05.

History and notable events

BNB launched on 2017-07-08, in the middle of the 2017 token-sale wave, and at the start it was a utility token for Binance fee discounts. Its all-time low of about $0.04 came on 2017-10-18, a few months after launch.

The token's role widened when it moved off Ethereum and became the gas and staking asset of its own chain. A smart contract network compatible with Ethereum tooling brought in developers and users looking for lower fees, and that expanded BNB's use beyond the exchange.

Its all-time high of about $1,369.99 was reached on 2025-10-13. As of 2026-11-05, the price is about $709.72, which is roughly 23.6% lower than a year earlier and down about 3.4% over the past seven days. Those figures illustrate how much the price can swing even for a large, long-running token.

Some data providers tag BNB as an alleged unregistered security because of regulatory claims made in the United States. Readers should treat that as a label about a legal dispute, not a verdict, and check the current status themselves.

Risks to understand

BNB carries the same market risk as any crypto asset. Its price fell about 23.6% over the year to 2026-11-05 and sits well below its October 2025 peak. Nothing here predicts where it goes next.

Other risks are specific to its design:

  • Centralization: The network relies on a small set of 21 active validators, and the token has strong ties to a single company. Decisions at Binance or among large stakers can affect the whole ecosystem.
  • Regulatory pressure: Exchange tokens and their issuers have faced scrutiny from regulators in several countries, which can affect access and listings.
  • Smart contract and bridge risk: DeFi apps and cross-chain bridges on BNB Chain have been exploited in the past, as on other networks. Using a dApp means trusting its code.
  • Exchange custody risk: Coins left on an exchange are subject to that platform's security, solvency and withdrawal rules.
  • Staking risks: Delegated stake may be locked for an unbonding period, and validators can be penalized for misbehavior.

Only use money you can afford to lose, and do your own research before using any app.

How to store BNB safely

Your safest option depends on how you use BNB. If you hold a meaningful amount for the long term, a hardware wallet that supports BNB Chain keeps your private keys offline. Many browser and mobile wallets also work, but they are more exposed to malware and phishing.

A few habits matter most:

  • Protect the recovery phrase. Write it on paper or metal, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.
  • Check the network before sending. BNB exists on more than one network, so confirm that the sending and receiving addresses use the same one. Send a small test amount first.
  • Verify addresses and contracts. Copy addresses carefully, since clipboard malware can swap them. Make sure you are using the official app or site.
  • Review token approvals. Dapps ask for permission to spend your tokens, so revoke approvals you no longer need.
  • Keep a gas balance. A small amount of BNB is needed to move other tokens on the chain.

If you use an exchange, turn on two-factor authentication and withdrawal address allowlists.

By the numbers

BNB in numbers

BNB (BNB) is ranked #4 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $91.2B and a price of $693.62 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($91.2B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 2.3% over 7 days, down 10.8% over 30 days, down 27.3% over the past year. It trades about 49% below its all-time high of $1,370, set on Oct 13, 2025.

About 131.51M BNB are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 200M (66% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $1.18B, or 1.3% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

BNB is the native token of BNB Chain and BNB Chain; it also has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
