What Hyperliquid and HYPE are
Hyperliquid is a layer-1 blockchain built around a non-custodial onchain exchange for perpetual futures and spot trading. Perpetual futures are derivative contracts that let traders take leveraged long or short positions on an asset's price with no expiry date. Most large perpetuals venues have been centralized exchanges. Hyperliquid tries to offer a similar trading experience while settling everything on a public chain, so order books, positions and liquidations can be checked onchain.
Beyond the trading platform, the ecosystem includes spot markets, lending and borrowing, tokenized real-world assets, and an Ethereum Virtual Machine environment that lets developers deploy smart contracts. HYPE is the native token of this chain. In our directory, the issuing project, Hyperliquid, is listed under derivatives and scores 7.8 out of 10. It is aimed mainly at active crypto traders rather than casual holders.
At the time of writing, HYPE ranks about 11th by market capitalization, which makes it one of the larger tokens tied to a decentralized exchange.
What HYPE is used for
HYPE is the native asset of the Hyperliquid L1, and public descriptions list several roles for it. The first is paying network fees, including gas on the EVM side of the chain. The second is staking: because the chain uses proof of stake, holders can delegate tokens to validators to help secure the network and earn rewards set by the protocol. The third is governance, where token holders and validators take part in decisions about how the network evolves. Some sources also mention possible trading-fee benefits for holders, though the exact terms of any such benefit can change, so check the current documentation before relying on it.
HYPE is not a stablecoin and does not represent a claim on company profits. Trading collateral on the exchange is mainly held in dollar-pegged assets, so you do not need to hold HYPE simply to trade there. The token's value depends on demand for the chain, how much is staked, and wider market conditions.
Supply and tokenomics
HYPE has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-05, about 239.4 million were circulating, and total issued supply was about 951.5 million. The gap between circulating and total supply means a large share of tokens exist but are not yet freely traded, for example because they are held under vesting schedules or allocated for future use. Anyone assessing the token should read the project's own allocation and unlock details, as those can change how much supply reaches the market over time.
Around the same date, the price was about $81.88, giving a market cap of roughly $19.6 billion. The fully diluted valuation, which assumes the larger supply figure is in circulation, was about $77.9 billion. The 24-hour trading volume was about $1.22 billion. The price had slipped roughly 3.5 percent over seven days and was up about 106 percent over one year. These figures change constantly and are shown only as a snapshot, not as a signal of future direction.
Chains, holding and trading
HYPE is issued on the Hyperliquid L1, its own chain, rather than on Ethereum or another established network. The chain is commonly described as having two main parts: a core layer that runs the exchange's order books and trading logic, and an EVM layer where general-purpose smart contracts can run. Gas on the EVM layer is paid in HYPE.
In general terms, people hold HYPE in one of three ways. Some keep it in a self-custody wallet that supports the Hyperliquid network. Some use wallet connections to move assets between the chain and other networks through supported bridges. Others hold it on centralized exchanges that list the token, which is simpler but means the exchange controls the keys. HYPE can be traded on centralized venues and on the chain's own spot markets. Fees, supported networks and available pairs vary by platform, so check the details on whichever service you choose. Moving assets between chains adds extra steps and extra risk, because mistakes with network selection or addresses are usually not reversible.
History and notable events
Our data does not give a precise launch date for the token, so we will keep the history short. The earliest price record in our data is from late November 2024, when HYPE hit its all-time low of about $3.81 on 2024-11-29. Publicly, the token entered the market with a community airdrop to early users of the exchange, and the project drew attention for not selling tokens to outside investors in a conventional fundraising round. Treat that as general background and confirm it against the project's own announcements.
From that low, the price rose substantially. Our data shows an all-time high of about $97.96 on 2026-09-23. As of 2026-11-05, the price was somewhat below that peak. Such a large move in under two years shows how volatile the token has been. Past performance says nothing about what happens next, and large gains are always accompanied by the possibility of equally sharp drawdowns.
Risks to understand
HYPE carries the usual risks of a young, actively traded crypto asset, plus some specific to its setting. Price volatility is high. Smart contract and bridge risks exist whenever assets move across chains. The chain relies on a relatively small validator set compared with older networks, which raises questions about decentralization that you should weigh for yourself. Governance, upgrades and token unlock schedules can change the supply picture. Heavy dependence on one flagship exchange also means the token's fortunes are tied closely to that product's success.
The exchange itself offers leveraged derivatives, which can lead to rapid and total losses and are unsuitable for many people. You must be 18 or older, or 21 or older where local rules require it, and you should check that trading derivatives or online speculation is legal where you live. Some regions restrict access to such services. Respect those rules, including any age or identity checks, and do not try to work around them. Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell.
How to store HYPE safely
For anything beyond small amounts, self-custody with a reputable wallet that supports the Hyperliquid network is the usual approach. A hardware wallet adds protection by keeping your private keys offline, and it can often be used together with compatible software wallets. Write down your recovery phrase on paper, store it offline in a secure place, and never type it into a website, share it in chat, or photograph it. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Before sending a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm the network and address. Be cautious with token approvals, because malicious contracts can drain wallets that have granted broad permissions, and revoke approvals you no longer need. Beware of fake airdrop claims, look-alike websites and unsolicited direct messages. If you stake HYPE, understand any unbonding period and the validator you delegate to before locking funds. Keeping tokens on an exchange is convenient for trading, but it means you rely on that company's security and solvency.

HYPE FAQs
What is HYPE used for?
HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid L1. Public sources list its roles as paying network and gas fees, staking to help secure the proof-of-stake chain, and taking part in governance. Some sources also mention possible trading-fee benefits.
What is the supply of HYPE?
The maximum supply is 1 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-05, about 239.4 million were circulating and about 951.5 million had been issued in total. The remainder of the circulating gap is mostly tokens not yet freely traded.
Which blockchain does HYPE run on?
HYPE runs on its own chain, the Hyperliquid L1, rather than on Ethereum. The chain has an EVM-compatible environment, but the token's home network is Hyperliquid itself.
Is HYPE a good investment?
It depends on your risk tolerance, and we do not give buy or sell advice. The token has been very volatile, with an all-time low of about $3.81 in late 2024 and a high of about $97.96 in September 2026. Only consider amounts you could afford to lose, and do your own research.
Can I hold HYPE in my own wallet?
Yes. Many people use a self-custody wallet that supports the Hyperliquid network, ideally paired with a hardware wallet for larger holdings. Others hold it on centralized exchanges that list it. Self-custody gives you control of the keys but also full responsibility for backups.
Is it legal to trade on Hyperliquid where I live?
Rules differ by country and region, and some places restrict derivatives or online speculation. You must be 18 or older, or 21 or older where required, and should check what is legal where you live. Follow any age and identity checks rather than trying to bypass them.
