What Sky (SKY) is

Sky (SKY) is the governance token of Sky Protocol, a decentralized finance system that began in 2024 as a rebrand and upgrade of the older Maker Protocol, better known as MakerDAO. The protocol is built around a dollar-pegged stablecoin called USDS, and it also continues to support the earlier DAI stablecoin.

In plain terms, SKY works like a voting share. People who hold it can take part in decisions about how the protocol is run, such as risk settings and system upgrades. The project describes itself as having no single CEO or traditional company structure, and says it is steered by its community of token holders instead.

Sky Protocol runs on smart contracts, which are programs on a blockchain that execute automatically. Users can save, borrow and earn rewards without handing funds to a bank or broker. Two tokens sit at the centre of the design: USDS for stable savings and spending, and SKY for governance and for staking. On our site the issuing project is listed as Sky, in the collateralized debt position (CDP) category, and it is the renamed MakerDAO.

What SKY is used for

Public descriptions point to two core uses for SKY: governance and staking.

Governance. Holding SKY gives voting power over major changes to the system. That covers proposals affecting the protocol's rules and parameters. Votes are cast onchain, and the weight of a vote follows the amount of SKY committed.

Staking. SKY can be locked in the Staking Engine, which the project describes as a way to help secure the system and earn rewards. The rewards on offer and their rates are set by the protocol and can change, so check the current terms in the app rather than relying on older articles.

Borrowing. Staking SKY also lets holders borrow USDS against their staked position. That means someone can access stablecoin liquidity without selling their SKY. Borrowing against a volatile asset carries liquidation risk, covered in the risks section below.

The protocol also uses a cross-chain connection called SkyLink, which is meant to move user funds between blockchains. SKY itself is mainly a governance and staking asset, not a payment currency.

Supply and tokenomics

Based on the data available, SKY has a maximum supply of about 23.46 billion tokens. About 23.42 billion are circulating and about 23.45 billion exist in total, so nearly the whole supply is already out in the market. The figures are close enough that the fully diluted value is only slightly above the circulating market capitalisation.

As of 2026-11-05, SKY traded at about $0.066, giving a market capitalisation of roughly $1.55 billion and a rank of around 58 by size. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $6.9 million, which is modest compared with the market value. The price had risen about 2.7% over seven days and about 30% over a year.

For context, the recorded all-time high was about $0.101 on 2026-10-05, and the all-time low was about $0.036 on 2025-02-02. These numbers move daily and are not a forecast.

The data does not give a detailed breakdown of allocations, vesting or emission schedules for SKY, so this page does not make claims on those points. Check the protocol's governance documents for the current rules.

Chains, holding and trading

SKY is issued on Ethereum as a standard token. It is not the native coin of its own blockchain, so network fees on Ethereum are paid in ETH, not SKY.

Because it is an Ethereum token, it can be held in any wallet that supports Ethereum assets, and it appears in the wallet as a balance under the token's contract address. Always confirm the contract address from the protocol's official channels before interacting with it, since look-alike tokens exist.

SKY can be bought and sold on centralized exchanges that list it and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum. Reported trading volume is smallish relative to market value, which can mean wider spreads on thinner markets. Check the order book or pool depth before trading a large amount.

The main interface for staking and borrowing is the protocol's own web app, Sky.money, where users connect a wallet to stake SKY, borrow USDS and use the stablecoin savings features. SkyLink is described as a way to connect funds across other chains for cheaper transactions, though the details of which chains are supported change over time.

History and notable events

The story of SKY starts with MakerDAO, one of the earliest and best-known DeFi protocols, which created the DAI stablecoin backed by crypto collateral. In 2024 the project rebranded as Sky Protocol, introduced USDS alongside DAI and brought in SKY as a new governance token. Holders of the earlier governance token, MKR, were offered a way to upgrade into SKY.

public data here does not list a precise token launch date, so this page does not give one.

Price history in the data shows an all-time low of about $0.036 on 2025-02-02 and an all-time high of about $0.101 on 2026-10-05. That means the token reached its recorded peak about a month before the date of this page. Past moves do not indicate what comes next.

The rebrand also reflects a shift in how the project presents itself, from a single stablecoin issuer to a broader savings and capital allocation network, a description the project uses publicly. As with any governance-driven protocol, the direction depends on votes by token holders, so the system can keep changing.

Risks to understand

SKY carries the risks common to DeFi governance tokens, along with some that are specific to its design.

Smart contract risk. The protocol runs on code. Bugs, exploits or flaws in an upgrade could lead to loss of funds, even in audited systems.

Liquidation risk. Borrowing USDS against staked SKY means the loan is backed by a volatile asset. If the price of SKY drops sharply, the position could be liquidated, and you could lose part or all of the collateral.

Governance risk. Voting power follows token holdings, so large holders can have outsized influence. Rushed or poorly designed proposals can affect the system's safety.

Stablecoin risk. USDS and DAI aim to hold one dollar, but any stablecoin can drift from its peg under stress. The protocol's collateral can include real-world assets, which add counterparty and regulatory exposure.

Market and regulatory risk. Trading volume is modest relative to market value, and the price can change quickly. Rules on DeFi and stablecoins vary by country and may change.

How to store SKY safely

Because SKY is an Ethereum token, safe storage comes down to protecting the wallet that holds it.

For larger balances, a hardware wallet is a common choice, since it keeps the private keys offline and requires physical confirmation for transactions. For smaller amounts, a reputable software wallet can work, as long as the device is kept secure and up to date.

Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it offline in a safe place. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it in a photo or cloud note. No genuine support team will ask for it.

Be careful with approvals. When you stake or borrow, the app asks your wallet to approve a contract to move your tokens. Review what you are approving, and revoke permissions you no longer need.

Check that you are on the correct site by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark, since phishing copies of DeFi apps are common. Keeping tokens on an exchange is convenient, but you rely on the exchange and cannot vote or stake directly from there.

By the numbers

Sky in numbers

Sky (SKY) is ranked #58 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.56B and a price of $0.0665 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($1.56B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 1.4% over 7 days, down 23.6% over 30 days, up 30.1% over the past year. It trades about 34% below its all-time high of $0.1009, set on Oct 5, 2026.

About 23.42B SKY are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 23.46B (100% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $10.1M, or 0.7% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

SKY has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
