What Uniswap (UNI) is

UNI is the governance token of the Uniswap protocol, an automated market maker (AMM) and decentralized exchange. Uniswap lets people swap tokens directly from their own wallets, without handing funds to a company. Prices come from pools of tokens supplied by liquidity providers rather than from an order book run by an operator.

The protocol launched in 2018 and grew into one of the best-known applications in decentralized finance. UNI came later, in 2020, as a way to give users and the community a say in how the protocol is run. Owning UNI does not give you a share of a company. It is a token tied to voting rights over a set of open smart contracts and a community treasury.

On our site the issuing project is listed as Uniswap V3, a non-custodial exchange protocol for token swaps and concentrated liquidity provision across 40+ chains. UNI is the token that sits above the protocol versions and relates to the wider Uniswap ecosystem rather than to a single pool or trading pair.

At the time of writing UNI ranks around 24th by market capitalization, which places it among the larger DeFi tokens.

What UNI is used for

The main purpose of UNI is governance. Holders can take part in votes on how the protocol evolves. According to the project description, key decisions such as how the treasury is used or which upgrades go ahead can be settled through a governance vote.

In practice, governance works through proposals. Ideas are discussed in public forums, then move to formal votes where voting weight follows the amount of UNI held or delegated. Many holders delegate their voting power to other community members instead of voting themselves.

Uniswap's developer documentation also says UNI holders are represented through an entity called DUNI, and that protocol fees have been handled differently since December 2025. The details are not covered in the data used for this page, so check the current official documentation and governance forum for how fees and holder rights work today.

UNI is also traded like any other crypto asset, and it is classed with DeFi, DEX, exchange and governance tokens. Some third-party guides describe it as a payment or fee token for swaps. That is not how ordinary Uniswap swaps work, so treat that claim with caution.

Supply and tokenomics

UNI has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. At the time of writing, about 609.7 million are circulating and the total issued supply is about 886.2 million. That means roughly 61 percent of the maximum supply is circulating, and the remainder is either not yet issued or not yet counted as circulating.

The token was distributed among the community, the team, investors and advisors, with a multi-year release schedule instead of everything arriving at once. An early airdrop gave tokens to people who had used the exchange before launch. Exact allocations and unlock schedules are best checked in the project's own documentation.

As of 2026-11-05, the price was about $7.31, giving a market capitalization of about $4.46 billion. The fully diluted valuation, which assumes the maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, was about $6.48 billion. The gap between those two figures shows how much supply is still to enter circulation. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $586.6 million.

These figures change constantly and are shown only for context, not as a signal about where the price may go.

Chains and how UNI is held and traded

UNI began on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token, and Ethereum remains its home network. The data also lists versions issued on Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Unichain, Near, Harmony, Heco and xDai (now Gnosis Chain). UNI is not the native coin of any chain. Gas fees on every network are paid in that network's own coin.

Many of these non-Ethereum versions are bridged or wrapped representations, so the same name can refer to tokens with different contracts. Before buying or swapping, confirm you are using the correct contract address for the chain you intend to use. Some of the listed networks are older or much less active than Ethereum, so liquidity may be thin on them.

People usually get UNI in one of two ways. Centralized exchanges list it against fiat currencies and stablecoins, and you can withdraw it to a personal wallet. Alternatively, you can swap for it directly on Uniswap or another decentralized exchange using a wallet such as MetaMask. Decentralized trading means you sign each transaction yourself and pay a network fee.

History and notable events

Uniswap launched in 2018, and the UNI token followed in September 2020, when it was handed out to past users of the exchange. That airdrop was a widely noted moment for DeFi, because it showed a way to give early users governance power rather than only selling tokens.

The price history has been volatile. The all-time low in the data was about $1.03 on 2020-09-16, shortly after launch, and the all-time high was about $44.92 on 2021-05-02, during the broad crypto rally of that year. As of 2026-11-05 the price was well below that peak. The data shows a gain of about 43.8 percent over the past year and about 3.9 percent over the past seven days, but past moves say little about the future.

The protocol itself has gone through several versions, with V3 introducing concentrated liquidity, where providers choose price ranges to supply funds within. Uniswap has since expanded across many networks, including its own chain, Unichain. Governance proposals have shaped how the treasury, deployments and fees are handled over the years.

Risks to understand

UNI carries the usual risks of a crypto asset, plus some specific to governance tokens.

  • Price volatility. The drop from the 2021 high shows how far the price can swing.
  • Governance concentration. Voting power can sit with a small number of large holders or delegates, which may limit how much a small holder can influence outcomes.
  • Unclear value rights. Whether holders benefit financially from protocol activity depends on governance decisions and legal structures that can change. Read the current official documentation rather than relying on summaries.
  • Smart contract risk. Bugs or exploits in the protocol or in bridges can cause losses.
  • Regulatory risk. Rules on DeFi and on tokens with governance features vary by country and may change.
  • Fake and bridged tokens. Copycat tokens with similar names exist, and bridged versions add another layer of trust.
  • Scams. Fake airdrops, phishing sites and malicious token approvals are common around well-known DeFi brands.

Nothing here is investment advice. Only consider amounts you could afford to lose, and do your own research.

How to store UNI safely

Because UNI is a standard token on Ethereum and compatible networks, you can hold it in any wallet that supports those networks. Leaving it on an exchange is convenient, but you rely on the exchange to hold your funds and, usually, to handle votes for you. Self-custody gives you control, along with full responsibility.

Sensible habits include:

  • Use a hardware wallet for larger amounts and keep the recovery phrase offline, never in photos, cloud notes or messages.
  • Double-check the token contract address and the network before sending anything, and send a small test amount first.
  • Treat unsolicited messages, airdrop claims and support requests as suspect. No legitimate team asks for your recovery phrase.
  • Review and revoke old token approvals you granted to DeFi apps you no longer use.
  • Bookmark the official Uniswap interface instead of searching for it each time.

If you want to vote, you generally need to hold UNI in a wallet you control and either vote directly or delegate your voting power. Voting itself is usually free of gas on some interfaces, but delegation transactions cost network fees.

By the numbers

Uniswap in numbers

Uniswap (UNI) is ranked #25 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $4.29B and a price of $7.04 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $6.24B, so roughly 69% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was up 4.1% over 7 days, down 14.9% over 30 days, up 32.8% over the past year. It trades about 84% below its all-time high of $44.92, set on May 2, 2021.

About 609.68M UNI are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 1B (61% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $825M, or 19% of its market cap: high turnover.

UNI has token contracts on 11 chains we track, including Ethereum, HECO, Avalanche, xDai. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

UNI is linked to Uniswap V3, which we cover in our DEXes rankings. See our Uniswap V3 page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
