What Synthetix is

Synthetix is a decentralized protocol on Ethereum that has been described in several ways over the years. Earlier descriptions focused on minting synthetic assets, called Synths, that track the price of other assets. The project's current description presents it as a decentralized perpetual futures protocol. Perpetual futures are derivative contracts that let traders take leveraged long or short positions on an asset without an expiry date.

According to the project's own description, Synthetix uses a hybrid design. Orders are matched off-chain on a central limit order book, which keeps latency low, while settlement happens on-chain on Ethereum. The aim is to give traders the speed of a centralized exchange while custody and finality remain on a public blockchain.

Liquidity comes from the Synthetix Liquidity Provider vault, known as the SLP vault. Staked SNX acts as a backstop behind that vault and behind the sUSD stablecoin. SNX is therefore the protocol's risk-bearing collateral token, and it also acts as a governance token for the ecosystem.

What SNX is used for

The clearest use of SNX is as collateral. Users lock up SNX to back the issuance of sUSD, the protocol's stablecoin, and to support the solvency of the SLP vault. If the protocol takes losses that its other liquidity cannot cover, staked SNX is what sits behind them. That is why stakers are generally rewarded for taking on this risk.

Third-party descriptions say holders who stake SNX can receive a share of protocol trading fees, though the exact reward mechanics have changed over time and should be checked in the current documentation. SNX has also been used in governance, where holders take part in decisions about protocol upgrades and parameters.

SNX is not a payment token and is not needed to trade on the exchange itself. Traders mainly interact with sUSD or other collateral. SNX matters to those who underwrite the system, to governance participants, and to people who hold it as a market position. Because the token's job is tied to protocol risk, its value depends heavily on how well the protocol performs.

Supply and tokenomics

At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, about 581 million SNX were in circulation, with a total supply of roughly 581.4 million. The data shows no fixed maximum supply, so readers should not assume a hard cap exists. Circulating and total supply are almost the same, which means very little supply is still locked or unissued, and fully diluted value is close to market capitalization at about $101 million.

The token's market data from that date shows a price of about $0.17 and a 24-hour trading volume of about $4.3 million. It ranked around 271st by market capitalization. Over the previous seven days the price had fallen by about 11 percent, and over the previous year by about 79 percent.

SNX has historically had an inflationary issuance schedule, with new tokens paid out as staking rewards. The details of that schedule have been changed by governance several times, so check the current documentation before relying on any specific emission figure. This page does not give one, because public sources do not include it.

Chains and how it is held and traded

SNX was first issued on Ethereum, and the data lists it on several other networks too: Polygon, Harmony, Near, Fantom, Base, Optimism, Heco and Avalanche. Those versions are typically bridged or wrapped representations, and not every one is actively supported. Some of those chains have lost most of their activity. Confirm which contract address and network you are using before moving funds.

SNX is not the native token of any blockchain. It is a standard token that follows the ERC-20 format on Ethereum, so it works with most Ethereum wallets and decentralized applications.

In general terms, people hold SNX in a self-custody wallet or on a centralized exchange account. It can be traded on decentralized exchanges through liquidity pools and on a number of centralized exchanges. Staking SNX to back the protocol is done through Synthetix's own interface and smart contracts, not through an exchange. Staking carries extra risks beyond simply holding the token, because the staked tokens are exposed to protocol debt and liquidation rules.

History and notable events

Synthetix launched on 2018-03-11. In its early days the project was known under a different name, Havven, before it became Synthetix and the SNX token. The all-time low in the data is about $0.035 on 2019-01-05, and the all-time high is about $28.53 on 2021-02-13, during the broad crypto market surge of that period. At the time of writing, the price is more than 99 percent below that peak.

Over the years the project moved from a model centered on minting many different synthetic assets toward a focus on derivatives and perpetual futures. It also expanded to multiple networks, including Optimism and Base, in search of lower fees and more activity. The current description emphasizes a hybrid off-chain matching and on-chain settlement design.

Public sources do not include a detailed timeline of upgrades, incidents or governance votes, so this page does not list them. For a full history, readers should consult the project's official announcements and governance forum.

Risks

The main risk is that staked SNX sits behind the protocol's liabilities. If the SLP vault or the trading system suffers large losses, stakers can be exposed. SNX stakers also carry debt tied to the stablecoin they back, which can create liquidation or collateral-ratio problems when the token's price falls sharply.

Price volatility is high. The token fell about 79 percent over the year to 2026-11-05, and daily trading volume was modest relative to its history. Thin liquidity can make larger trades move the price.

Other risks include:

  • Smart contract risk: bugs or exploits in the protocol or its bridges could cause losses.
  • Stablecoin risk: sUSD has had trouble holding its peg at times in its history, so it should not be treated as equivalent to a bank dollar.
  • Derivatives risk: perpetual futures use leverage, which can wipe out a position quickly. Users must be 18 or older, or 21 or older where required, and should check that derivatives trading is legal where they live.
  • Multi-chain risk: wrapped versions on less active networks may be poorly supported.

How to store SNX safely

Because SNX is an ERC-20 token, any Ethereum-compatible wallet can hold it. For anything beyond small amounts, a hardware wallet is the usual choice, since it keeps the private keys offline. Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it somewhere separate from the device, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.

Before sending SNX, check that the receiving address supports the same network. Sending tokens to the wrong chain can make recovery difficult or impossible. Send a small test amount first when moving a large balance.

If you stake SNX, remember that tokens locked in a contract are not in your wallet in the usual sense and carry the contract risks described above. Review token approvals from time to time and revoke any you no longer use. Be wary of fake airdrops, copycat websites and direct messages offering help, which are common ways people lose funds. Keeping long-term holdings in a separate wallet from the one you use for interacting with applications limits the damage if something goes wrong.

By the numbers

Synthetix in numbers

Synthetix (SNX) is ranked #274 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $98.1M and a price of $0.1689 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($98.2M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 8.0% over 7 days, down 31.4% over 30 days, down 79.8% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $28.53, set on Feb 13, 2021.

About 580.98M SNX are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $4.35M, or 4.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

SNX has token contracts on 9 chains we track, including Ethereum, Polygon, Harmony, Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
