What SUSHI is

SUSHI is the native token of SushiSwap, a decentralized exchange (DEX) that runs on an automated market maker (AMM) model. Instead of matching buyers and sellers through an order book, an AMM lets users trade against pools of tokens that other users have deposited. The project describes itself as a multi-chain DEX covering a wide range of assets across 40+ networks, with a swap and aggregation stack meant to find good pricing.

SUSHI began as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and is now issued on many networks, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Avalanche, Solana and Katana. It is not the native gas token of any chain, so it is better understood as a protocol token than as a base-layer coin.

The development arm is Sushi Labs, which works under the Sushi DAO and has talked about a multi-DEX ecosystem with projects named Susa, Saru and Wara. SushiSwap V3, the concentrated-liquidity version of the exchange, is the product most closely tied to the token on our site.

What the token is used for

Public project materials describe SUSHI as a governance token that also gives holders a share of the platform's transaction fees. Governance means holders can take part in Sushi DAO decisions, such as how treasury funds are used or how the protocol is run. Fee sharing has historically worked through staking, where holders lock up SUSHI to receive a portion of trading fees. Exact mechanics have changed over time, so check the current documentation before relying on any specific arrangement.

SUSHI has also been used as a reward for liquidity providers, which is why it is grouped with yield farming tokens. Providers who deposit assets into pools have earned SUSHI on top of trading fees in some programs.

A newer use appears in the project's own announcements: SUSHI can be used as a quote asset for Sushi Launch on Robinhood Chain, where users create and deploy tokens paired against tokenized real-world assets. Details of that product are best confirmed with the project directly.

Supply and tokenomics

SUSHI has no hard maximum supply listed in the data. As of 2026-11-05, circulating supply is about 286.8 million tokens and total supply is about 291.5 million, so most existing tokens are already in circulation. The fully diluted valuation of about $55.2M sits close to the market cap of about $54.2M, which reflects that small gap.

Because there is no fixed cap, the emission schedule and any DAO decisions on issuance matter. The data does not describe the current emission rules, so readers should consult official documentation and governance forums to see whether and how new SUSHI can be created.

Tokenomics also depend on how fee sharing, treasury allocation and liquidity incentives are set by the DAO, and those can change by vote. Treat any older article describing the original 2020 distribution as a historical snapshot and not a description of today's setup.

Chains, holding and trading

SUSHI is issued on a long list of networks, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Harmony, Fantom, Near, Robinhood Chain, Base, Celo, Arbitrum, Katana, Avalanche and Solana. Many of these versions are bridged or wrapped representations, so the same ticker can map to different contracts depending on the chain. Always confirm the contract address from an official source before swapping or sending funds.

SUSHI is held in ordinary self-custody wallets that support the relevant network, or on centralized exchanges that list it. It trades on the SushiSwap interface itself and on other DEXs and exchanges. As of 2026-11-05, 24-hour trading volume was about $3.3M, which is modest relative to its market cap, and the token ranked around 415 by market cap.

Moving SUSHI between chains involves bridges, which add their own technical and security risk. Sending tokens to a wallet address on the wrong network can result in permanent loss.

History and notable events

SushiSwap launched in 2020 as a fork of Uniswap's code, and it became widely known for a rapid episode in which it drew liquidity away from the original protocol through token rewards. The launch was followed by leadership and governance turbulence in its early period. Since then the project has expanded across many chains and added products such as concentrated liquidity and an aggregation layer.

Price history shows how much the token has fallen from its peak. SUSHI reached an all-time high of about $23.38 on 2021-03-13. As of 2026-11-05 it traded around $0.19, with an all-time low of about $0.14 recorded on 2026-06-25. Over the past year the price was down roughly 55%, and about 5% lower over seven days. These are descriptions of past movement, not forecasts.

Risks to understand

SUSHI carries the usual risks of DeFi tokens, plus some specific to its situation. Price volatility is high, and a long decline from its peak shows that governance and fee-sharing features do not guarantee value. Lower trading volume can mean wider spreads when moving larger amounts.

Smart contract risk applies to the exchange, its pools and any bridges. Liquidity providers face impermanent loss, where the value of deposited assets can lag behind simply holding them. Governance risk also exists: DAO votes can change fee structures, emissions or treasury use in ways holders may not expect. Multi-chain deployment multiplies the number of contracts and bridges that could fail.

Finally, fake tokens and phishing sites imitate well-known DeFi brands, so verify addresses and interfaces carefully. Nothing here is investment advice.

How to store SUSHI safely

Keep SUSHI in a wallet you control, ideally a hardware wallet for larger amounts, and write down the recovery phrase offline. Never share it or type it into a website. Use a separate wallet for experimenting with DeFi apps so your main holdings are not exposed to risky approvals.

Before interacting with SushiSwap or any dApp, check that you are on the correct site and that the token contract matches the official address for your chain. Review token approvals periodically and revoke permissions you no longer need. Send a small test transaction first when moving funds to a new address or network.

If you leave tokens on an exchange, remember you rely on that company's security and withdrawal policies. Self-custody puts responsibility on you, so back up your keys carefully.

By the numbers

Sushi in numbers

Sushi (SUSHI) is ranked #416 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $53.0M and a price of $0.1849 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($53.9M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 2.8% over 7 days, down 23.3% over 30 days, down 57.6% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $23.38, set on Mar 13, 2021.

About 286.75M SUSHI are in circulation, from a total supply of 291.51M. No hard maximum supply is listed.

24-hour trading volume was about $3.51M, or 6.6% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

SUSHI has token contracts on 13 chains we track, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Harmony. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

SUSHI is linked to SushiSwap V3, which we cover in our DEXes rankings. See our SushiSwap V3 page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

CoinGecko groups SUSHI under DeFi tokens, DEX tokens, Exchange tokens, Yield farming tokens, Governance tokens.
