What Curve DAO (CRV) is
Curve DAO (CRV) is the governance token of Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange built on an automated market maker (AMM) model. Instead of an order book, users trade against pools of tokens that liquidity providers have deposited. Curve is aimed at swapping assets that are meant to trade at about the same value, such as different dollar stablecoins or wrapped and staked versions of the same underlying asset.
That narrow focus is the main difference from general-purpose exchanges like Uniswap. Because the assets in a Curve pool are expected to hold similar prices, the pool design can offer low slippage on large swaps. The project description gives the 3CRV pool, made up of DAI, USDT and USDC, as a well-known example. It also supports yield-bearing tokens, so a liquidity provider can earn from the underlying asset, from swap fees and from CRV rewards.
CRV itself is not a stablecoin and does not track any asset. It is a separate token that gives holders a role in steering the protocol. At the time of writing it ranks around 114th by market capitalization, with a market cap of about $428.9M as of 2026-11-05.
What CRV is used for
CRV is mainly a governance and incentive token. Curve has been paying it out to liquidity providers as a reward on top of swap fees, which is meant to attract deposits into particular pools. The project description describes this as one of three possible sources of yield for a provider, alongside swap fees and the yield of the underlying tokens.
On the governance side, CRV holders can lock their tokens in exchange for vote-escrowed CRV, known as veCRV. As publicly documented by the project, longer locks, up to four years, give more voting power. That power is used to vote on protocol proposals and to direct how CRV rewards are split between pools, which are called gauges. veCRV holders have also been able to receive a share of protocol fees and boosted rewards on their own liquidity positions.
This design led to what people call the Curve Wars, where other DeFi projects accumulate veCRV or bribe holders so that more CRV rewards flow to pools containing their own tokens. The details of fee distribution and parameters can change through governance, so check the current rules before relying on any of them.
Supply and tokenomics
CRV has a fixed maximum supply of about 3.03 billion tokens. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, about 1.58 billion are circulating, and the total supply that has been created so far is about 2.43 billion. The gap between circulating and total supply means a large amount of CRV exists but is not yet freely circulating, which is part of why the fully diluted valuation, about $658.4M, is higher than the market cap of about $428.9M.
New CRV enters circulation on a pre-set emission schedule that is meant to decline over time, with portions allocated to liquidity providers and other groups such as early contributors, investors and a community reserve. The exact breakdown and vesting terms are set out in the project's documentation, and this page does not restate them in detail.
Two points matter for readers. First, ongoing emissions add sell pressure when recipients choose to sell. Second, locking CRV as veCRV takes tokens out of liquid circulation for the lock period, which affects how much is actually available to trade. Neither point is a forecast of price direction.
Chains and how it is held and traded
CRV originated on Ethereum, and the main contract there is the reference version. Versions of the token are also issued on Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Etherlink, Base and Polygon. CRV is not the native gas token of any chain. On every network it is an ordinary token that needs the chain's own coin to pay transaction fees.
Because there are several versions, it is worth checking which network a given CRV balance sits on. Tokens on different chains are not interchangeable without a bridge, and a transfer sent to the wrong network can be hard or impossible to recover. Bridged versions also carry the extra risk of the bridge itself.
In general terms, CRV can be held in a self-custody wallet or on a centralized exchange account. It trades on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized ones, including Curve's own pools on some chains. Liquidity is deepest on Ethereum and on the large exchanges. At the time of writing, 24-hour trading volume was about $42.2M. Veteran users who want governance rights usually lock tokens on Ethereum through the Curve interface, rather than holding them on an exchange.
History and notable events
Curve launched in 2020, and CRV began trading around August of that year. The recorded all-time high of about $15.37 was on 2020-08-13, in the early burst of the DeFi yield-farming period. The all-time low in the data, about $0.1707, was on 2026-06-06, so the price has spent much of the time since the launch well below that early peak.
Over the years Curve added features beyond the original stableswap pools, including pools for volatile pairs, cross-chain deployments, and its own dollar stablecoin, crvUSD. Its pools became a core liquidity venue for many stablecoins and liquid staking tokens.
Two events are widely discussed. In July 2023, a bug in certain versions of the Vyper programming language, which several Curve pools were written in, was exploited and drained funds from multiple pools. Around the same time, attention focused on the founder's large loans backed by CRV on lending platforms, which raised concerns about what a forced sale of a big position could do to the price. Both episodes are public record, and readers should consult original reporting for specifics.
Risks
CRV carries the usual risks of a DeFi governance token, and a few specific ones.
Price volatility. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, the price was about $0.27, down roughly 16% over seven days and roughly 34% over one year. Moves of that size can happen quickly.
Smart contract risk. Curve's contracts have been audited, but audits do not rule out bugs. The 2023 compiler-related exploit showed that risk can come from tools and dependencies as well as from the project's own code.
Emissions and concentrated holdings. Continued token emissions and large holders selling or using CRV as loan collateral can pressure the price.
Governance complexity. Voting power rewards long lock-ups, and large players and outside protocols can hold significant influence. Locked tokens cannot be sold until the lock ends.
Liquidity provider risk. Pools can lose value if one of the pooled assets loses its peg, and impermanent loss still applies to non-stable pairs.
Bridge and fake token risk. Bridged versions on other chains add counterparty risk, and look-alike tokens exist. This page is not financial advice.
How to store CRV safely
CRV is a standard token, so it can be held in any wallet that supports the network it is on. For meaningful amounts, many people use a hardware wallet, which keeps the private keys offline and requires a physical confirmation for each transaction. Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, keep it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.
Before sending funds, confirm the network and the token's contract address from the project's official documentation, because fake tokens with the same name exist. A small test transfer is a common precaution. Be careful with token approvals when using a DeFi app: review what you are approving and revoke permissions you no longer need.
If you plan to lock CRV for governance rights, remember that a lock is a commitment. You cannot withdraw before it expires, so consider that before you lock tokens. Keep the wallet device updated, and be wary of unsolicited messages, airdrop claims and links, which are a common route for wallet-draining scams.

CRV FAQs
What is CRV used for?
CRV is the governance token of Curve Finance. It is paid as a reward to liquidity providers and can be locked as veCRV to vote on protocol decisions and on how rewards are directed to pools. Locking is also linked to fee sharing and boosted rewards, subject to the current rules.
What is the supply of CRV?
The maximum supply is about 3.03 billion CRV. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, roughly 1.58 billion are circulating, and about 2.43 billion have been created in total. New tokens are released on a scheduled emission plan.
Which blockchains is CRV on?
CRV is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, and versions of it are issued on Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Etherlink, Base and Polygon. It is not the native coin of any chain, so you need that chain's gas token to move it.
What is veCRV?
veCRV stands for vote-escrowed CRV. You receive it by locking CRV for a chosen period, up to four years according to the project's documentation. The longer the lock, the more voting power, and the tokens cannot be withdrawn until the lock ends.
Is Curve DAO safe?
Curve's code has been audited and it has operated for years, but no DeFi protocol is risk-free. In July 2023 a bug in certain Vyper compiler versions led to exploits of several Curve pools. Anyone using the protocol should understand smart contract, depeg and price risks first.
What are CRV's all-time high and low?
The data shows an all-time low of about $0.1707 on 2026-06-06 and an all-time high of about $15.37 on 2020-08-13. Those are historical records, not predictions, and the current price changes constantly.
What is the market cap of Curve DAO?
As of Nov 7, 2026, Curve DAO had a market cap of about $415M, ranking #113 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of CRV?
Curve DAO's all-time high is $15.37, reached on Aug 13, 2020. Its all-time low is $0.1707 (Jun 6, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of CRV?
As of Nov 7, 2026, about 1.58B CRV were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 3.03B.
