What Arbitrum and the ARB token are
Arbitrum is an Ethereum scaling network. It is an optimistic rollup, which means transactions are processed away from Ethereum's main chain and the results are posted back to Ethereum for security. For users, the result is an environment that works much like Ethereum but with lower fees and faster confirmation. The network hosts many decentralized applications, and the project description names GMX, Radiant, Uniswap V3 and Gains Network among the larger ones.
ARB is the token tied to the Arbitrum ecosystem. It is not the coin used to pay for ordinary transactions, a point some beginner guides get wrong. Fees on Arbitrum One are paid in ether (ETH). ARB instead exists mainly as a governance token for the Arbitrum DAO, the community body that votes on proposals about the network and its treasury.
As of 2026-11-05, ARB ranked around 71st by market capitalization, at roughly $0.16 per token with a market cap of about $1.11 billion. Those figures move constantly, so treat them as a snapshot, not a current quote.
What ARB is used for
The clearest use of ARB is governance. Holders can vote directly or delegate their voting power to another address, and the Arbitrum DAO decides on matters such as protocol upgrades, funding grants and how the treasury is spent. The value of that vote depends on how much those decisions matter to the network and how engaged the community is.
Some guides describe ARB as a fee token or a staking asset. For the main Arbitrum network, that is not how it works: gas is paid in ETH, and ARB is described by most sources as a token for governance and ecosystem incentives. Individual dApps may add their own uses, such as rewards or integrations, but those are separate choices made by each project and can change.
The token is also used as a reward in ecosystem programs, which the DAO has funded from its treasury to encourage activity on the network. Holding ARB does not give a claim on network revenue or on the assets of any dApp. It gives a say in how the DAO is run, and nothing more should be assumed.
Supply and tokenomics
ARB has a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, and the total supply is the same figure. At the time of writing, about 6.89 billion were circulating, which is roughly 69 percent of the total. The fully diluted valuation, which values every token at today's price, was about $1.61 billion as of 2026-11-05, compared with a market cap of about $1.11 billion.
The gap between those two numbers matters. It reflects tokens that exist but have not yet reached the market, mainly allocations held for the team, early investors and advisors that are released on a vesting schedule. The initial allocation also included a large share for the Arbitrum DAO treasury and a share distributed to users and participating communities in an airdrop. Exact percentages and release dates are published by the project, so check them there before relying on any figure here.
Because supply is capped, there is no ongoing inflation written into the token's design, though DAO votes could in principle change rules. Scheduled releases of vested tokens can still increase the amount available to trade, which is one reason the circulating figure keeps rising.
Chains, holding and trading
ARB was issued on several chains. The data lists Arbitrum, Ethereum and Arbitrum Nova. The Ethereum version is the original anchor for the token, while the Arbitrum One version is the one most people use day to day because transfers are cheaper. Arbitrum Nova is a separate chain from the same family, designed for high-volume uses like gaming and social apps.
Because there are multiple versions of the token, it matters which network you are on when you send or receive it. Sending ARB to an address on the wrong network can make it difficult or impossible to recover.
Most people hold ARB in a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks, or on a centralized exchange account. It trades against stablecoins and ETH on many exchanges, and on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap on Arbitrum. At the time of writing, the 24-hour trading volume was about $129 million, which is a sizeable amount for the token's market cap but can change quickly.
Moving assets between Ethereum and Arbitrum uses a bridge. Withdrawals through the official bridge can take about a week because of the rollup's challenge period, though third-party bridges can be faster and carry their own risks.
History and notable events
ARB was introduced in March 2023, when the Arbitrum Foundation launched the token and the DAO structure alongside a large airdrop to users of the network. The launch moved control of key parts of the protocol toward token holders, at least on paper, and the DAO has since voted on a range of funding and incentive programs.
The price history has been difficult for holders. The token's all-time high was about $2.39 on 2024-01-12. Its all-time low, about $0.07, came as recently as 2026-06-26. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.16, down roughly 36 percent over one year and about 3 percent over the previous seven days. This is a description of past movement, not a forecast.
Arbitrum has also been one of the larger layer 2 networks by value locked in its applications, though competition from other rollups has grown. Rankings of that kind shift over time, so check current figures from several sources. The token's backers, according to market data listings, have included well-known crypto investment firms, which is a matter of record and says nothing about future performance.
Main risks
Price risk. ARB is volatile and has fallen sharply from its peak. Its value depends partly on how the market views Arbitrum's future, which is uncertain.
Supply risk. Scheduled releases of vested tokens can add selling pressure, since a meaningful share of the total supply was not yet in circulation.
Limited token rights. ARB gives governance votes, not a share of fees or profits. Voting power can also be concentrated among large holders or delegates, so participation may not be evenly spread.
Competition. Other layer 2 networks offer similar speed and cost. If users and developers move elsewhere, activity on Arbitrum could fall.
Technical and centralization risk. Rollups rely on smart contracts, bridges and sequencers, and a bug or outage in any of them could cause problems. Rollup upgrades are controlled by governance processes and a security council, so users depend on those bodies acting responsibly.
Scams. Fake airdrops, copycat tokens and phishing sites have targeted Arbitrum users. Always verify the token contract address from an official source before swapping.

How to store ARB safely
Where you keep ARB depends on how much you hold and how you plan to use it. For small amounts you plan to trade soon, an exchange account is convenient but means the exchange controls the keys. For longer holding, a self-custody wallet is generally preferred, and a hardware wallet adds protection for larger balances.
Write down your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff. Keep it in more than one secure place if possible.
Before sending, check that you are on the correct network, Arbitrum One, Ethereum or Nova, and send a small test amount first. Confirm the ARB contract address from an official source, because lookalike tokens are common.
If you vote in the DAO, you may be asked to sign messages or delegate. Read each wallet prompt carefully, and revoke token approvals you no longer need on the apps you have used. Consider keeping a separate wallet for experimenting with new dApps so that your main holdings stay isolated from risky contracts.
By the numbers
Arbitrum in numbers
