What Optimism and the OP token are
Optimism is a Layer 2 network for Ethereum that uses optimistic rollup technology. It processes transactions off the main Ethereum chain and posts the results back to Ethereum, which aims to make transfers faster and cheaper while relying on Ethereum for security. The project was formerly known as Plasma Group.
OP is the network's governance token. It is tied to the Optimism Collective, the community structure that steers upgrades and funding for the ecosystem.
Optimism is now described by its team as more than one chain. OP Mainnet was the first, and the open-source OP Stack has since been used to build a group of connected chains called the Superchain. Chains named in the project description include Base (from Coinbase), Unichain (from Uniswap), Ink (from Kraken) and World Chain (from Worldcoin).
As of 2026-11-05, OP ranked around 146th by market capitalization, with a market cap of about $248.9 million. Optimism is also a popular home for DeFi apps, NFT projects and payment tools, though what you can do depends on the app, not on the OP token itself.
What OP is used for
The main publicly stated use of OP is governance. Holders take part in decisions about protocol upgrades, funding programs and other matters that shape the Optimism Collective. Governance has been organized in two layers: a token-based house where OP holders vote, and a separate house for identity-based participants known as citizens.
OP is not the gas token on OP Mainnet. Fees on the network are paid in ETH, so using Optimism day to day does not require OP. The token matters mainly if you want a voice in how the ecosystem is run, or if you receive it through ecosystem grants or incentive programs.
The project description also outlines a revenue-sharing model across the Superchain. Each participating OP Chain is described as paying back the greater of 2.5% of its total revenue or 15% of its onchain profit, where profit means fees minus Layer 1 gas costs. Those funds go to the Optimism Collective. The material provided does not state that this revenue flows directly to OP holders, so treat it as ecosystem funding rather than a dividend.
Supply and tokenomics
The data lists a maximum and total supply of 4,294,967,296 OP, the same figure for both. About 2.29 billion OP were circulating as of 2026-11-05, roughly 53% of the total.
That gap shows up in the valuation figures. The market cap was about $248.9 million, while the fully diluted valuation, which assumes every token is in circulation, was about $466.8 million. A large share of supply is therefore not yet liquid, and the release of those tokens over time can add selling pressure or dilute existing holders, depending on who receives them and what they do.
the public information available here do not break down the allocation between the team, investors, ecosystem funds and the community. For that, check the official Optimism documentation and governance posts, which describe allocations and vesting schedules in more detail.
At the time of writing, the price was about $0.109, and 24-hour trading volume was about $36.1 million. These numbers move constantly and are shown only for context.
Chains, holding and trading
OP was issued on Optimism, and the data lists it as the native token of the Optimism chain. In practice it exists as an ERC-20 style token on OP Mainnet. Versions of OP also exist on other networks, usually through bridges, so it matters which network an address or exchange withdrawal uses.
Most people get OP in one of two ways. The first is through a centralized exchange, where they can buy, sell and later withdraw to a personal wallet. The second is on a decentralized exchange on Optimism or another supported network, using a wallet that holds a little ETH for fees.
To move assets onto OP Mainnet from Ethereum, users typically use a bridge. Bridges can be official or third-party, and they vary in speed, cost and risk. Withdrawals from OP Mainnet back to Ethereum through the canonical route have historically involved a waiting period, a feature of optimistic rollups.
Before sending anything, confirm that the receiving address supports the exact network you are sending on. A transfer to the wrong network can be difficult or impossible to recover.
History and notable events
Optimism began as Plasma Group, a research team working on scaling Ethereum, before it became Optimism and launched its optimistic rollup network. The OP token and the Optimism Collective followed, setting up governance by token holders and the citizens' structure. Public sources provided do not include an exact launch date, so none is given here.
The most notable development is the growth of the OP Stack and the Superchain. Several large companies built their own Layer 2 networks on this open-source framework, which the project describes as powering the majority of Ethereum Layer 2 activity.
On the market side, OP reached an all-time high of about $4.84 on 2024-03-06. It fell to an all-time low of about $0.081 on 2026-08-18. At the time of writing, the price was down about 68% over the past year and roughly flat over the past seven days. Those figures describe the past and say nothing about future prices.
Risks to understand
Price risk is the most visible one. OP has fallen sharply from its peak, and a token tied to a governance role can lose value even while the underlying network grows. Usage of the Superchain does not automatically translate into demand for OP, because fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH and the revenue-sharing model pays into the Collective.
Supply is another factor. With only about 53% of the total supply circulating, future unlocks may weigh on the market.
Competition is real. Many Layer 2 networks, some using different technology, compete for users, developers and liquidity. Chains built on the OP Stack could also change how they relate to Optimism over time.
Technical risks include smart contract bugs, bridge failures, upgrade-key controls and the way a rollup is operated. Governance can also be concentrated if a few large holders or delegates hold most voting power.

How to store OP safely
If you hold OP, a self-custody wallet gives you control of your own keys. Hardware wallets are widely used for larger balances because the private key stays on the device. Software wallets that support Ethereum-compatible networks can also hold OP, provided you add or select the Optimism network.
Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it offline. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it in a photo or cloud note. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Send a small test transaction first, especially when moving funds between networks. Check that the token contract address matches the one listed in official Optimism documentation, since fake tokens with the same name exist.
Be cautious with token approvals. Connecting a wallet to a dApp can grant it permission to spend your tokens, so review and revoke old approvals periodically. If you vote in governance through delegation, remember that delegating does not need you to move tokens to a new address.
Keep a small amount of ETH on Optimism for network fees.
By the numbers
Optimism in numbers
Optimism (OP) is ranked #146 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $238M and a price of $0.1040 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $447M, so roughly 53% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was up 1.1% over 7 days, down 14.4% over 30 days, down 71.2% over the past year. It trades about 98% below its all-time high of $4.84, set on Mar 6, 2024.
About 2.29B OP are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 4.29B (53% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $44.2M, or 19% of its market cap: high turnover.
OP is the native token of Optimism and Optimism. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

OP FAQs
What is the OP token used for?
OP is mainly a governance token. Holders can take part in decisions about protocol upgrades and funding in the Optimism Collective. It is not used to pay gas on OP Mainnet, where fees are paid in ETH.
Do I need OP to use the Optimism network?
No. Transaction fees on Optimism are paid in ETH, so you only need OP if you want to participate in governance or hold the token for other reasons. Keep a small amount of ETH on the network for fees.
What is the total supply of OP?
The data lists a maximum and total supply of 4,294,967,296 OP. About 2.29 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, which is roughly 53% of that total.
Is Optimism the same as Arbitrum?
Not quite. Optimism is the broader project and network, including OP Mainnet and the Superchain. Arbitrum is a separate Layer 2 with its own token and governance. Both are optimistic rollups on Ethereum, but they are run by different communities.
Which chains are part of the Optimism Superchain?
Base, Unichain, Ink and World Chain are named in the project description as chains built on the OP Stack. They are separate networks run by their own teams, but they are part of the Superchain and follow its revenue-sharing model.
Why has the OP price fallen so much?
The data shows OP at about $0.109 as of 2026-11-05, down roughly 68% over a year and near its all-time low of about $0.081 set on 2026-08-18. Reasons commonly cited for such declines include token unlocks, competition and weak links between network usage and token demand. This page does not predict future prices.
What is the market cap of Optimism?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Optimism had a market cap of about $238M, ranking #146 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of OP?
Optimism's all-time high is $4.84, reached on Mar 6, 2024. Its all-time low is $0.0807 (Aug 18, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of OP?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 2.29B OP were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 4.29B.
Which blockchains is OP on?
OP is the native token of Optimism and Optimism.
