Optimism is a layer 2 network for Ethereum. Its main chain, OP Mainnet, uses optimistic rollups: transactions are processed off Ethereum's base layer, and the results are posted back to Ethereum, which acts as the settlement layer. The system assumes transactions are valid unless someone challenges them, which keeps costs lower than running everything on Ethereum directly. OP Mainnet is built to match the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Ethereum wallets and smart contracts generally work with little change.

Optimism is also the home of the OP Stack, a shared software kit used by other chains. Chains that follow the standard OP Stack setup share technical and governance parameters, which is the idea behind the wider Optimism ecosystem. Fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH. The OP token is the network's native token and is mainly tied to governance, not to everyday gas payments.

Our directory lists 294 dApps for Optimism. Many of the best-known names are multichain, so their size figures reflect all the networks they run on. Lending and yield are well represented, with Compound V3, Spark Savings, Spark Liquidity Layer, Veda and ether.fi Stake all supporting Optimism, alongside the Optimism Bridge for moving assets between Ethereum and OP Mainnet. Aave V3, Morpho Blue and the Uniswap versions are also widely used across the layer 2 landscape. Check each app's page for current chain support and risks before using it.

Frequently asked questions

What is Optimism?

Optimism is a layer 2 network built on top of Ethereum. It uses optimistic rollups, which bundle many transactions together and post the data back to Ethereum, so users pay lower fees while relying on Ethereum for security. Its main network is called OP Mainnet.

Is Optimism compatible with Ethereum apps?

Yes. OP Mainnet is designed to run Ethereum smart contracts with little or no change, so many Ethereum apps and wallets work on it. Always check that a dApp supports Optimism specifically before connecting a wallet.

Which token do I need to pay fees on Optimism?

Transaction fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH, not in OP. The OP token is mainly used for governance of the Optimism ecosystem. Fee levels change with network activity and with Ethereum data costs.

How do I move funds to Optimism?

The canonical Optimism Bridge moves assets between Ethereum and OP Mainnet. Deposits to Optimism are usually quick, while withdrawals back to Ethereum through the canonical bridge take about a week because of the optimistic rollup challenge period. Third-party bridges such as LayerZero V2 and Chainlink CCIP offer other routes, each with its own risks.

What kinds of dApps can I use on Optimism?

Several listed apps support Optimism, including Compound V3 for lending, ether.fi Stake for liquid staking, Spark Savings and Spark Liquidity Layer for stablecoin yield and allocation, and Veda for vault products. Our directory currently lists 294 dApps for the chain, so use the category filters to narrow them down.

Do the TVL numbers shown for dApps all come from Optimism?

Many protocols, such as Aave V3, Morpho Blue and Uniswap, run on a dozen or more chains, so their TVL is a protocol-wide figure and does not show how much sits on Optimism. Treat the numbers as a sign of the app's overall size, not its Optimism activity, and check the chain-level data before you deposit.

What is the largest dApp on Optimism by TVL?

Binance CEX is the largest dApp on Optimism by total value locked, with $127B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by OKX ($28.4B) and LayerZero V2 ($17.9B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on Optimism has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Aave V3 has the highest score at 8.6/10, ahead of Uniswap V4 (8.5) and Uniswap V3 (8.4). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on Optimism?

DappsAtlas tracks 317 dApps on Optimism. Of these, 317 have a full review and 247 report value locked, $251B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on Optimism?

DEXes (36), Lending (30) and Centralized Exchanges (28) are the largest categories on Optimism, by number of projects.

Which dApps on Optimism grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Contango V2 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+74.0%) and Flipster the biggest drop (−28.0%). Combined TVL moved −2.4% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on Optimism?

The 270 rated dApps on Optimism average 6.2 out of 10. Of these, 11 score 8 or higher and 28 score below 5.
