A canonical bridge is the official route for moving tokens and messages between a blockchain and its parent network, most often Ethereum. Rollups and sidechains such as Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and Linea each run their own. If you want to use apps on one of these chains, you typically start by depositing through its canonical bridge.
These dApps work by locking or escrowing assets on one side and releasing or minting the matching asset on the other, with the chain's own verification rules deciding when a transfer is final. Most do not charge a separate bridge fee. You pay network gas, and the chain operator typically earns from fees on the layer-2 itself. Total value locked (TVL) shows how much sits in each bridge. At the time of writing, Arbitrum Bridge, Base Bridge and Polygon Bridge each hold roughly $2.7B to $3.5B.
When comparing, look at the TVL and track record, withdrawal times back to Ethereum, which assets are supported, and any past exploits or shutdown notices. Larger bridges like Arbitrum Bridge, Base Bridge, Optimism Bridge and Linea Bridge have had more use, but size does not remove smart-contract risk. Always confirm you are on the official site before you approve a transaction.
This page lists bridges only, not gambling services. Anyone using a bridge to reach a betting platform must be 18+ (21+ where required) and should check that online gambling is legal in their location.

Frequently asked questions
What is a canonical bridge?
A canonical bridge is the official bridge a chain uses to move assets between itself and its parent network, usually Ethereum. Most listed here are tied to a layer-2 rollup or sidechain. Its token transfers rely on the chain's own messaging rather than a separate company's liquidity pool.
Are canonical bridges safe?
Canonical bridges are often considered the baseline option because they use the chain's own security design and are the reference route for the bridged assets. They are still smart contracts and can have bugs. The Taiko Bridge reopened on July 1, 2026 after a $1.7 million exploit, which shows that risk exists. Check the official bridge address and recent incident history before sending funds.
How is a canonical bridge different from a third-party bridge?
A canonical bridge is run by the chain itself, while a third-party bridge is built by an outside team, often with liquidity pools for faster transfers. Third-party routes can be quicker or cheaper but add another set of contracts and trust assumptions. Canonical routes can be slower, especially when withdrawing.
Why do withdrawals take longer than deposits?
Depositing from Ethereum into a layer 2 is usually quick, within minutes in many cases. Withdrawing back to Ethereum can take much longer on optimistic rollups, often around a week, because of challenge periods. Zero-knowledge rollups can differ, so read the withdrawal notes on each bridge page.
What does it cost to use a canonical bridge?
You pay the network gas fee on Ethereum and sometimes on the destination chain. Most canonical bridges do not add a separate protocol fee, though the chain's operators earn from transaction fees on their network. Check the confirmation screen for the actual cost before you approve.
Are any of the bridges listed here closing, or linked to gambling?
Check each bridge's official status page first. Cronos zkEVM Bridge, for example, says on its site that it is closing and users should withdraw. SX Rollup Bridge connects to the chain behind the SX Bet betting exchange. Gambling there is for adults only, 18+ or 21+ where required, and you should confirm online betting is legal where you live.
What is the largest canonical bridge by TVL?
Arbitrum Bridge is the largest canonical bridge by total value locked, with $3.27B. It is followed by Base Bridge ($2.87B) and Polygon Bridge ($2.68B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which canonical bridge has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Arbitrum Bridge has the highest score at 8.0/10, ahead of Linea Bridge (7.6) and Starkgate (7.6). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many canonical bridges does DappsAtlas track?
DappsAtlas tracks 67 canonical bridges. Of these, 67 have a full review and 63 report value locked, $11.0B in total.
What chains do most canonical bridges run on?
Which canonical bridges grew the most this week?
Among canonical bridges with at least $1M locked, Taiko Bridge had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+11.1%) and Lisk Bridge the biggest drop (−38.5%). Combined TVL moved −0.4% over the same seven days.
What is the average score for canonical bridges?
The 44 rated canonical bridges average 6.1 out of 10. Of these, 1 score 8 or higher and 5 score below 5.
