Privacy dApps are applications that protect information people usually expose on public blockchains or the open web. Most of them shield token transfers, so outsiders cannot easily connect a deposit to a later withdrawal. Others cover encrypted messaging, decentralized VPN access, private surveys or proving facts about web data without revealing the data itself.
Transfer-focused protocols such as Tornado Cash, Railgun, zkBob and Hinkal let you deposit funds into a shared pool and prove ownership with zero-knowledge cryptography when you withdraw. Zama takes a different route, using fully homomorphic encryption to keep balances and amounts encrypted. Revenue differs by project. Some charge fees on shielding, unshielding or relaying, some rely on a native token for staking or incentives, and some, like Orchid, take payments from users to independent bandwidth providers. A few projects are still early and their business models are not settled.
When comparing options, look at which chains are supported and how much value sits in the pool, since a bigger pool generally makes it harder to link transactions. Compare the underlying technology and whether it has been audited. Look at how each handles compliance, for example viewing keys in Hinkal or the withdrawal approach of Privacy Pools. Also weigh legal exposure: Tornado Cash has a history of US sanctions, and rules on privacy tools vary by country. Railgun, with Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain and Polygon support, and Zama, which targets institutions and developers, show how different the approaches can be.

Frequently asked questions
What is a crypto privacy dApp?
On-chain privacy tools hide or break the visible link between sender, receiver and amount on a public blockchain. Depending on the project, they use zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs), stealth addresses or fully homomorphic encryption. This category also covers privacy-focused messengers, VPNs and data tools.
Are privacy protocols legal to use?
Rules differ by country, and Tornado Cash has a history of US sanctions, so the risk is real. Check the law where you live and whether a given protocol is restricted for you before using it. Some newer projects, such as Privacy Pools and Hinkal, add compliance-oriented features like proof of innocence or viewing keys.
Do privacy dApps make transactions fully anonymous?
Not completely. Funds in a shielded pool are harder to trace, but a small pool, a predictable deposit-and-withdraw pattern or reusing an address can still give clues. The size of the pool and how you use it both matter.
Which privacy dApps have the most value locked?
Tornado Cash had the largest TVL in our list, at about $834.6M at the time of writing. Zama (about $119.8M) and Railgun (about $113.0M) follow. TVL is only a rough proxy for liquidity and does not measure safety or privacy quality.
Are all of these dApps about hiding payments?
No. Several entries are not about moving money, including Session and Adamant (messaging), Orchid (a decentralized VPN), BlockSurvey (encrypted forms), zkPass (proofs of web data) and Nillion (private data computation). Many of these have no TVL figure because there is no pool of funds to measure.
What risks should I think about before using one?
Smart contract risk applies to all of them, as does the risk that a protocol becomes restricted or gets delisted from front ends. Check for audits and read how withdrawals work before you deposit. Start with a small amount and keep your own records for tax and legal purposes.
What is the largest privacy dApp by TVL?
Tornado Cash is the largest privacy dApp by total value locked, with $774M. It is followed by Zama ($112M) and Railgun ($107M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
