Governance dApps are the voting and decision-making tools of blockchain projects. They let token holders or members submit proposals, vote on them and, in many cases, trigger the approved change automatically through a smart contract. They are the main way a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) runs treasuries, protocol settings and community rules without a central management team.
Most governance tools work in two parts: a place to discuss and create proposals, and a voting system that counts votes by token balance, delegation or another rule. Some votes happen off-chain through signed messages to keep costs low, while others are executed on-chain. The platforms themselves often earn little directly. Many are open-source and funded by grants or a project treasury, while some charge DAOs for premium services or take part in a token economy of their own.
Our governance listing has no dApps at the time of writing, so there are no ranked leaders to point to yet. When you compare governance tools, such as well-known examples like Snapshot, Tally or Aragon, look at which blockchains they support, whether votes are on-chain or off-chain, how delegation works, what fees apply, and whether the code has been audited. Also check how much of the voting power sits with a few wallets, since that affects how meaningful any vote really is. None of this is financial advice, and anything connected to gambling is for adults 18+ (21+ where required) in places where it is legal.

Frequently asked questions
What is a governance dApp?
A governance dApp lets people who hold a token or membership vote on decisions about a blockchain project. Votes can cover things like fee changes, treasury spending or software upgrades. The rules are written in smart contracts, so the outcome is recorded openly on-chain.
What is the difference between a DAO and a governance dApp?
A DAO, or decentralized autonomous organization, is a group that coordinates through smart contracts and member votes instead of a traditional management chain. Governance dApps are the tools DAOs use to create proposals, count votes and carry out the results. Some DAOs build their own tools, and others use shared platforms.
Do I need tokens to vote?
Usually you connect a crypto wallet and hold the project's governance token, or sometimes an NFT or membership pass. Your voting power is typically tied to how many tokens you hold or have delegated to you. Each project sets its own rules, so check the documentation before buying anything.
Does voting in a DAO cost money?
Voting itself is often free if it happens off-chain through signed messages, though some platforms record votes on-chain and charge network gas fees. Delegating votes or executing an approved proposal can also cost gas. The cost depends on the blockchain and the platform's setup.
What are the risks of governance tokens?
Governance tokens can lose value, and voting power is often concentrated among large holders, so a few wallets can sway outcomes. Proposals can also contain flaws or be pushed through by a small, motivated group. Read proposals carefully, check who is behind them and never approve wallet permissions you do not understand.
Are governance tokens connected to crypto casinos?
Governance tokens are not gambling products, but some casino-style platforms issue them alongside their games. Gambling is for adults only, 18+ or 21+ where required, and online gambling is not legal everywhere. Check the rules where you live before taking part, and do not try to get around age checks, KYC or location limits.
Which governance dApp has the highest DappsAtlas score?
The Realms has the highest score at 7.5/10. Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
