Cross-chain bridges are dApps that move tokens or messages between blockchains that otherwise cannot communicate. If you hold USDC on Ethereum and want to use it on Arbitrum, Base or Solana, a bridge handles the transfer. Some also support native Bitcoin or swaps between different assets, and others act as infrastructure that other apps build on.

Under the hood, designs vary. Some bridges lock assets on one chain and release or mint them on another, such as Stargate with its shared liquidity pools. Others use intents, where relayers or market makers front the funds and are repaid afterward, as Across and NEAR Intents do. Messaging layers like LayerZero, Wormhole, Hyperlane and Axelar let apps send instructions between chains. Revenue usually comes from small transfer or swap fees, with liquidity providers often taking a share, and some protocols also have governance tokens such as W, ZRO and CLEAR.

When comparing, look at which chains and tokens are supported, the total quoted cost including gas, how long transfers take, and how security is handled: audits, validator or relayer setup, and past exploits. Locked value is a rough signal of use, but not of safety. Our list includes Stargate V2, Across, Hyperlane, Symbiosis and Maya Protocol, as well as smaller bridges with reported incidents. Bridge hacks have been among the largest losses in crypto, so start small and confirm the destination address and chain before sending anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cross-chain bridge?

A cross-chain bridge is an application that moves value or data between two blockchains that cannot talk to each other directly. Depending on the design, it locks, burns, or swaps assets on one chain and releases or mints an equivalent on another. Some bridges also pass messages so apps can trigger actions across chains.

Are cross-chain bridges safe?

Bridges hold large pools of assets and rely on smart contracts, validators, or relayers, which makes them frequent exploit targets. Risk varies by design and by team. Our list notes reported incidents for TeleSwap, CrossCurve and Meter Passport, so check a bridge's audit history and any recent incidents before sending funds.

How much do bridges cost to use?

Most charge a small protocol or relayer fee, plus the gas cost on the source and destination chains. Intent-based bridges such as Across and NEAR Intents let market makers or relayers compete, which can narrow the price. Always review the quote before you confirm, because fees and slippage change with market conditions.

What is the difference between a lock-and-mint bridge and an intent-based bridge?

A traditional bridge typically locks tokens on one chain and issues a wrapped version on another. An intent-based bridge lets you state the outcome you want, and a solver or market maker fronts the funds on the destination chain, then gets repaid later. This can be faster, but it still depends on the quality of the solvers and the settlement layer.

Can I bridge Bitcoin to other chains?

Some can, but support differs. Maya Protocol swaps native Bitcoin without wrapping, atomiq exchange links native Bitcoin to Solana and Starknet, and TeleSwap and MultiBit Protocol target Bitcoin-related assets. Bitcoin bridges are often smaller and carry more risk, so look at audits and past incidents first.

How do I choose a bridge for a transfer?

Start with a bridge that supports both chains and the exact token you hold. Compare the total quoted cost, transfer time, audits, track record, and how the bridge is secured. Larger and longer-running options such as Stargate, Across, Wormhole and Axelar have more history to review, though none are risk-free. Start with a small test transfer.

What is the largest cross chain bridge by TVL?

JustCryptos is the largest cross chain bridge by total value locked, with $2.41B. It is followed by Kraken Bitcoin ($715M) and Nexus BTC ($338M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which cross chain bridge has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Across has the highest score at 8.0/10, ahead of Stargate V2 (7.6) and Axelar Cross Chain (7.6). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many cross chain bridges does DappsAtlas track?

DappsAtlas tracks 102 cross chain bridges. Of these, 102 have a full review and 45 report value locked, $3.93B in total.

What chains do most cross chain bridges run on?

Ethereum is the most common, with 61 of 102 cross chain bridges, followed by BNB Chain (52) and Polygon (41). 77% are deployed on more than one chain.

Which cross chain bridges grew the most this week?

Among cross chain bridges with at least $1M locked, Stargate V2 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+5.5%) and Across the biggest drop (−8.3%). Combined TVL moved −3.3% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for cross chain bridges?

The 53 rated cross chain bridges average 5.7 out of 10. Of these, 1 score 8 or higher and 11 score below 5.
