Our verdict on Hyperlane

7.4/10

Hyperlane is a strong fit for developers and chain teams who want to connect to many chains without asking permission, and for users who want a bridge across a wide set of networks. Its main strengths are broad chain and VM coverage and flexible messaging beyond token transfers. The main caveat is security transparency. DefiLlama lists no audits, and route safety depends on the validator setup chosen by each deployer. Review the docs and start with small transfers.

What is Hyperlane?

Hyperlane is an open framework for cross-chain communication. Its homepage describes it as a way to bridge, swap and send data across 150+ chains and 7 virtual machines. DefiLlama files it under cross-chain bridges and lists about 72.8 million USD in TVL.

The pitch is aimed at builders: chain teams, asset issuers and app developers who want interoperability without waiting for a core team or governance vote. The homepage also shows a consumer-facing Nexus bridge and an Explorer for tracking messages.

The homepage claims more than 10 billion USD bridged and over 10,000 cross-chain transfer messages validated daily. These are self-reported. DefiLlama lists a HYPER token, and it shows zero audits for the protocol, which is worth weighing when assessing risk.

How Hyperlane works

Hyperlane is a messaging layer between blockchains. An application on one chain sends a message through Hyperlane contracts. Validators attest to that message, and a relayer delivers it to the destination chain, where a contract checks it and acts on it. Token bridging is one use of this, where tokens are locked or burned on one chain and released or minted on another.

The design is permissionless. Anyone can deploy Hyperlane contracts on a chain and pick their own validators and relayer settings, according to the homepage. This gives developers control but also means the security level of a route depends on those choices.

Beyond transfers, messages can carry any data, such as swap instructions or governance votes. That lets apps run multi-step actions across chains.

7 features

Key features

01

Arbitrary interchain messaging

Hyperlane sends arbitrary data between chains, not only tokens. The homepage cites cross-chain swap routing, multichain asset issuance and cross-chain governance.

02

Permissionless deployment

Developers can deploy without core team or governance approval. They choose contract extensions, relayer setup and validators.

03

Multi-VM support

The homepage says Hyperlane covers EVM, Solana and Cosmos-style environments plus custom VM architectures, across 7 VMs.

04

Broad chain coverage

A single integration reaches 150+ chains, according to the homepage, from large networks to newer ones.

05

Nexus bridge and Explorer

Nexus is the bridge interface for moving assets, and there is a separate explorer for tracking messages.

06

Hyperlane-as-a-Service

The core team offers support for deployments, bridging and custom implementations for chain builders and asset issuers.

07

Multichain asset issuance

Asset issuers can create tokens that exist across multiple chains, with stablecoins highlighted on the homepage.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Permissionless deployment lets developers add new chains without core team or governance approval.
  • Supports many chains and 7 VM environments, including EVM, Solana and Cosmos-style chains.
  • Messaging covers more than token transfers, including swap routing and governance.
  • About 72.8 million USD in TVL per DefiLlama shows meaningful usage.
  • Includes a bridge app and an Explorer for tracking messages.

Watch out for

  • DefiLlama lists no audits for Hyperlane, and none are named in its homepage.
  • Fully permissionless deployment means the security of any given route depends on the validator and relayer setup chosen by whoever deploys it.
  • Cross-chain messaging protocols hold value across many chains, so one faulty route or validator set can cause losses.
  • Fee levels for bridging and messaging are not published publicly, so costs cannot be compared.
  • The DefiLlama listing dates from February 2026, and the headline stats on the homepage (volume, chain count) are self-reported and not independently verified here.
  • Using the bridge means trusting several wallets, chains and contracts, which is harder for beginners than a single-chain app.

Hyperlane fees

Fees are not published publicly we reviewed. Bridge users would normally pay source-chain gas plus any interchain gas payment for the relayer, and these amounts would show in the Nexus bridge interface or the wallet confirmation before a transfer.

Costs for deployers depend on the chains used and on whether they use the paid Hyperlane-as-a-Service support, whose pricing is not stated. Check the docs and the quote shown in the interface before sending funds.

Is Hyperlane safe?

DefiLlama lists no audits for Hyperlane, and its homepage does not name any. That does not prove the code is unaudited, so check the official docs for audit reports before relying on it. No hack or incident history is included publicly.

Bridges carry smart-contract and validator risk. Hyperlane's permissionless model lets each deployer choose validators and relayers, so the security of a route depends on those settings. Funds move through contracts on several chains, and a failure on any one of them can affect transfers. Use small amounts first and avoid leaving funds in transit.

6 steps

How to get started with Hyperlane

  1. 1

Read the Hyperlane documentation and the architecture page to understand the validator and relayer model.

  2. 2

Check that the chains and token you want are supported in the Nexus bridge interface.

  3. 3

Connect a wallet on the source chain and keep enough native token for gas.

  4. 4

Start with a small test transfer and review the quoted fees before confirming.

  5. 5

Track the transfer with the Explorer until it arrives on the destination chain.

  6. 6

Builders can start with the permissionless deployment docs, or contact the team about Hyperlane-as-a-Service.

Who Hyperlane is for

Hyperlane is for chain builders, asset issuers and app developers who need cross-chain messaging or token issuance on many networks. It also suits experienced DeFi users who want to bridge assets between supported chains and can judge bridge risk. Complete beginners should be cautious and learn the basics of bridging first.

Hyperlane FAQs

What is Hyperlane?

Hyperlane is an open interoperability protocol. It lets applications move assets and send arbitrary data between blockchains, and it has a Nexus bridge interface for token transfers.

Which chains does Hyperlane support?

The homepage says it supports 150+ chains and 7 virtual machines, including EVM, Solana (Sealevel) and Cosmos (CosmWasm). DefiLlama lists activity on chains such as Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, Linea and Hyperliquid.

Does Hyperlane have a token?

Public sources name HYPER as the Hyperlane token. The homepage links to a foundation, a Hyper token page and staking, but the details are not public we reviewed.

Is Hyperlane safe to use?

No safety guarantee can be given. DefiLlama lists zero audits for Hyperlane and no incident history is. Bridges are a high-risk category in general, so check the official docs for security audits and only move amounts you can afford to lose.

Can anyone deploy Hyperlane on a new chain?

Yes, according to the homepage. Developers can deploy without core team or governance approval and control contract extensibility, relayer configuration and validator selection. The core team also offers a paid-support style service called Hyperlane-as-a-Service for deployments.

How much value is locked in Hyperlane?

DefiLlama reports about 72.8 million USD in TVL, down about 1.2 percent over seven days at the time of the data.
