ActiveRailgun Review 2026: ZK Privacy for Ethereum DeFi
Railgun is an on-chain zero-knowledge privacy system for Ethereum and a few EVM networks, with about $113 million in TVL. It has no bridge or custody, but it is infrastructure used through third-party apps, not a standalone product.

Our verdict on Railgun
7.2/10Railgun suits users who want on-chain privacy for Ethereum DeFi and are comfortable using it through third-party wallets and apps. Its main strength is zk-SNARK privacy without a bridge, layer-2 or custody, backed by about $113 million in TVL and a listing since 2022. The main caveat is that it is infrastructure rather than a finished app, fees are not published publicly, and privacy tools carry regulatory uncertainty. Check local laws and read the audits first.

What is Railgun?
Railgun is a privacy protocol for Ethereum and other EVM networks. DefiLlama describes it as securing privacy for DEX trading and lending, and as a smart contract system that gives zk-SNARK privacy to any transaction or smart contract interaction.
DefiLlama lists it in the Privacy category on Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain and Polygon, with roughly $113 million in TVL and two audits listed. It has been tracked since January 2022 and has its own token, RAIL.
The project says it is purely on-chain, with no KYC, no custody, no bridge and no central actors. It also says it has no in-house app and is made for third parties to build on, so most people will meet it through integrations. This review is based on public data and project statements, not hands-on testing.
How Railgun works
Public blockchains show every address balance and transaction. Railgun adds a privacy layer on top using smart contracts and zk-SNARKs, a type of zero-knowledge proof that lets someone prove a transaction is valid without revealing who sent what.
Users deposit tokens into the Railgun contracts, often called shielding. Inside, balances and transfers are tracked privately. Users can then send funds or interact with DeFi protocols such as DEXs and lending from that private balance, and later withdraw to a public address.
The system runs as smart contracts directly on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon and BNB Chain, with no bridge or layer-2 involved. It ships no consumer app of its own, so wallets and other apps are expected to build it in.
6 features
Key features
01
zk-SNARK privacy
Railgun uses zk-SNARK proofs so transactions and contract interactions can be made without exposing the details publicly on Ethereum.
02
Private DeFi interactions
The project says it adds privacy to any transaction or smart contract interaction, with a focus on DEX trading and lending.
03
No bridge or layer-2
Railgun is described as built without any bridge or layer-2, running as smart contracts directly on the supported networks.
04
Non-custodial infrastructure
Project posts state there is no custody, no in-house app and no KYC. It is made to be built into third-party apps.
05
Four EVM networks
It is deployed on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon and BNB Chain according to public sources.
06
RAIL staking security
The RAIL token is linked to securing the system, with the project saying it is kept secure by RAIL holders and stakers.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Zero-knowledge privacy for ordinary Ethereum transactions and DeFi interactions.
- About $113 million in TVL, a sign of real usage for a privacy protocol.
- No bridge or layer-2 required, which avoids those added risks.
- Non-custodial design with no KYC, according to the project.
- Deployed on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon and BNB Chain.
- Listed since 2022, giving it a multi-year record, with two audits listed on DefiLlama.
Watch out for
- No first-party app: users must rely on third-party wallets and front ends, so the experience varies by integration.
- Privacy tools can draw regulatory scrutiny, and the project does not describe the legal position in any jurisdiction.
- Smart-contract and zero-knowledge circuit risk applies; only two audits are listed and their details are not public.
- Supported on four networks only (Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Polygon), so other chains are not covered.
- Fees, including any shielding or unshielding charges, are not given publicly and must be checked in the integration being used.
- Privacy depends on user behaviour, such as how quickly funds are moved out after shielding.
Railgun fees
Fees are not published. They would likely appear in the wallet or app used to access Railgun, along with network gas costs on the chain used.
Public sources list a RAIL token with a Google snippet price of $2.17, but they do not describe protocol fees, staking rewards or any fee distribution. Check the official site and documentation for current figures before moving funds.
Is Railgun safe?
DefiLlama lists two audits, but the auditors, dates and findings are not public, so read the reports on the official site. As with any smart contract system, bugs in the contracts or zero-knowledge circuits are a risk, and funds held in the contracts are exposed to that risk.
The project says it is non-custodial with no central actors, so users hold their own keys and no one can recover lost access. No hacks or incidents are mentioned publicly, but absence of mention is not proof of none. Privacy tools are subject to evolving regulation, so check local rules before using it.
6 steps
How to get started with Railgun
- 1
Read the official documentation on the Railgun site to understand how shielding and unshielding work.
- 2
Check that using privacy tools is legal where you live, and consider any tax reporting duties.
- 3
Choose a wallet or app that integrates Railgun, since the project has no in-house app.
- 4
Start with a small amount on one supported network (Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon or BNB Chain) to learn the process and gas costs.
- 5
Shield the tokens, then use the private balance for transfers or supported DeFi actions.
- 6
Keep your keys and recovery phrase safe, because there is no custodian to restore access.
Who Railgun is for
Railgun is for DeFi users, traders and developers on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon or BNB Chain who want to keep balances and activity from being fully public, and who are comfortable using a protocol through wallets or integrations. It is less suited to people wanting a single app with support, or those unsure about the legal status of privacy tools where they live.
Railgun FAQs
What is Railgun?
Railgun is a smart contract system that adds zk-SNARK privacy to transactions and smart contract interactions on Ethereum and other EVM networks. It is aimed at DeFi users who do not want their balances and activity fully visible on a public chain.
Which blockchains does Railgun support?
DefiLlama lists Railgun on Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain and Polygon. The project describes itself as built without any bridge or layer-2.
What is the RAIL token for?
RAIL is Railgun's token. Project posts in public reporting says it is held by stakers who help keep the system secure. The project does not detail tokenomics or staking terms, so check official documentation.
Does Railgun hold my funds or require KYC?
According to the project's own description, it has no custody, no KYC and no in-house app. The system is run by smart contracts, so users keep control of their keys. That also means no company can recover lost funds.
Is Railgun legal to use?
Privacy tools are lawful in many places, but rules differ by country and are changing. The project does not cover Railgun's regulatory status, so check the laws and any tax reporting duties where you live.
How do I use Railgun without an official app?
Public sources say Railgun is made for third parties and has no in-house app. Users generally access it through wallets and apps that integrate it. Check the official site for a current list of integrations.
