What Railgun and RAIL are

RAIL is the token tied to Railgun, a privacy system built from smart contracts on Ethereum. Railgun uses zk-SNARKs, a type of zero-knowledge proof, so a user can show that a transaction is valid without exposing which wallet sent it, which balance it came from, or in some cases what was moved.

The project describes itself as fully on-chain. It does not rely on a separate layer-2 network or a cross-chain bridge, so privacy comes from the contracts themselves. A user deposits tokens into a private balance, then trades, lends or sends from that balance without withdrawing first. Any Ethereum transaction or smart contract interaction can in principle be routed through it.

RAIL is not the privacy mechanism itself. People can use Railgun's shielding features without holding RAIL. The token sits one layer up, in the governance and reward side of the protocol. Data providers classify it under infrastructure, governance, privacy and zero-knowledge categories, which fits that split between the technology and the token that steers it.

What RAIL is used for

According to the project description, RAIL is a utility token. Holders can stake it to receive a share of treasury rewards, and stakers can vote for or against protocol updates. In practice that makes it a governance and staking token: it gives a say in how the protocol changes and a claim on part of what the treasury distributes.

The public information does not spell out how the rewards are funded, how often they are paid, or what the exact voting thresholds are. Anyone considering staking should read the current governance documentation and the staking contract details rather than rely on a summary like this one.

It also helps to be clear about what RAIL does not do. It is not required to make a private transaction, and it is not a gas token. Gas on each network is paid in that network's own coin, such as ETH on Ethereum. RAIL is not the native coin of any chain. It is issued as a token on Ethereum.

Supply and tokenomics

As of 2026-11-05, the data shows about 60 million RAIL in circulation, with a total supply of 60 million and a maximum supply of 100 million. Because circulating and total supply match, the fully diluted valuation equals the market cap at about $137.5 million.

The gap between the 60 million total and the 100 million maximum is worth noting. public data here does not explain how or when the remaining 40 million could be created, who would control that process, or whether governance has a role in it. That detail matters for anyone assessing dilution, so check the official tokenomics and governance records instead of assuming the maximum will never be reached or will be reached on a set schedule.

No allocation breakdown, vesting schedule or emission rate is included publicly available. Without those, it is not possible to say how much of the supply is held by the team, early backers, a treasury or the public. Treat any claim about distribution that is not backed by on-chain data or official documents with caution.

Chains, holding and trading

RAIL is issued as a token on Ethereum. The Railgun protocol itself runs on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and Arbitrum, so the privacy features are available on several networks even though the token is recorded as issued on Ethereum. Check the contract address on the network you are using, since similarly named tokens can appear on other chains.

Holding RAIL works like holding any Ethereum token. You keep it in a compatible wallet, and you can send it to an exchange or a decentralised exchange to trade it. Liquidity looks thin relative to size: reported 24-hour trading volume was about $139,000 at the time of writing, against a market cap of roughly $137.5 million. Low volume can mean wider spreads and larger price moves when orders are sizeable.

If you stake RAIL for rewards and voting, that is done through the protocol's own staking contracts. Those contracts carry smart contract risk on top of the token itself, so read what each step does before you approve a transaction.

History and price context

The launch date is not given in the data available, so this page does not state one. What the figures do show is a wide price range. The recorded all-time low was about $0.23 on 2022-11-09, and the all-time high was about $5.66 on 2025-11-07. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $2.29, which is well below that peak and about 21% lower than a year earlier. Over the prior seven days it was up by under 2%. The token ranked around 219 by market cap.

These numbers describe the past and say nothing about where the price goes next. A token that sits far from its high, trades on modest volume and belongs to a niche category can move sharply in either direction.

Privacy tools on public blockchains have drawn regulatory attention in several jurisdictions, and that backdrop is part of the context for any privacy-focused project. No specific events are asserted here beyond what the data supports, so for a full project timeline use the team's own announcements and audit reports.

Risks to understand

Several risks apply. Smart contract risk comes first: Railgun's privacy relies on complex cryptography and on-chain code, and a bug in either could affect funds. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it.

Regulatory risk is also relevant. Privacy-enhancing tools can face scrutiny, restrictions on access, or pressure on exchanges that list related tokens. Rules differ by country and change over time, so check what applies to you.

Market risk is real as well. Trading volume is small compared with market cap, which can make it harder to exit a position at a fair price. The 40 million gap between current total supply and the maximum supply is another unknown, because additional issuance would dilute holders.

Finally, privacy is not absolute. Careless habits, such as moving funds in and out of a private balance in matching amounts and timing, or reusing identifiable addresses, can weaken the privacy a user expects. Governance risk also exists: a token vote can change protocol rules, and the outcome may not suit every holder.

How to store RAIL safely

Because RAIL is a standard Ethereum token, the usual wallet advice applies. A hardware wallet is the safer choice for any amount you would not want to lose, with the recovery phrase written down offline and never typed into a website, shared in a chat or stored in a photo or cloud note.

Verify the token contract address from the project's official channels before you buy or approve anything. Fake tokens and cloned sites are common around privacy and DeFi projects. When a dApp asks for a token approval, check the spender and the amount, and revoke approvals you no longer need.

If you stake RAIL, remember that tokens placed in a staking contract are governed by that contract's rules, including any lock or withdrawal conditions. Consider a separate wallet for staking and governance activity, apart from the one that holds the bulk of your assets.

If you use Railgun's shielding features, keep your own records of what you moved and when, since tax and reporting obligations still apply in most places. This page is general information, not financial or tax advice.

By the numbers

Railgun in numbers

Railgun (RAIL) is ranked #221 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $131M and a price of $2.18 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($131M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 5.4% over 7 days, down 10.6% over 30 days, down 46.3% over the past year. It trades about 61% below its all-time high of $5.66, set on Nov 7, 2025.

About 60M RAIL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100M (60% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $164K, or 0.1% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

RAIL has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

RAIL FAQs

What is Railgun (RAIL)?

RAIL is the utility and governance token of Railgun, a privacy protocol on Ethereum. Holders can stake it to receive a share of treasury rewards and vote on protocol updates. It is not needed to make private transactions.

Do I need RAIL to use Railgun?

No. According to the project description, RAIL gives access to treasury rewards for stakers and a vote on protocol changes. Railgun's shielding features are separate, and gas is paid in each network's own coin.

What is the supply of RAIL?

As of 2026-11-05, about 60 million RAIL are in circulation and the total supply is 60 million, against a maximum of 100 million. The data here does not explain how the remaining 40 million would be issued, so check the official tokenomics documents.

Which blockchains does RAIL run on?

RAIL is issued on Ethereum. The Railgun protocol itself is available on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and Arbitrum. Always confirm the contract address for the network you are using.

Does using Railgun make me fully anonymous?

Not in any absolute sense. Railgun uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details, but user behaviour, such as matching deposit and withdrawal amounts or reusing known addresses, can reveal links. Smart contract and regulatory risks also apply.

How should I store RAIL?

A hardware wallet with an offline recovery phrase is the usual choice for meaningful amounts. Verify the official contract address, review token approvals, and keep staking activity in a separate wallet if you prefer.

What is the market cap of Railgun?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Railgun had a market cap of about $131M, ranking #221 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
