What Zcash is

Zcash is a cryptocurrency built for financial privacy. It runs on its own blockchain, which began as a fork of Bitcoin's codebase, and it uses zero-knowledge proofs so that a payment can be checked as valid without showing the sender, the receiver or the amount. The network still records that a valid transaction took place, but the details can stay encrypted.

The project grew out of work by a group of scientists who in 2013 proposed Zerocoin as a privacy add-on for Bitcoin, then built a separate protocol instead. Zcash went live on 2016-10-28.

Privacy is optional. Users can send transparent transactions, which are public like Bitcoin's, or shielded transactions, which are encrypted. Unified Addresses are designed to work with both types, so a wallet can handle either. The current shielded pool, called Orchard, relies on a proof system named Halo, which does not need a trusted setup ceremony.

On our site Zcash is grouped under Layer 1 tokens, privacy coins and zero-knowledge tokens. ZEC is the native coin of the Zcash chain, and it is not a token issued on another network.

What ZEC is used for

ZEC is the base currency of the Zcash network. The project describes it mainly as money: a way to make everyday payments, hold savings and send funds across borders when the user wants the amounts and parties kept confidential. Sending ZEC also pays the network fee, which is typically a fraction of a cent according to the project.

Zcash is not mainly a smart contract platform, even though some data providers tag it that way. Its identity is payments and privacy rather than a large catalogue of dApps, so there is no big on-chain app ecosystem to point to.

A feature that sets it apart from fully opaque privacy coins is the viewing key. A holder can share a key that lets a chosen third party, such as an auditor or tax authority, see the details of specific shielded transactions without gaining the ability to spend. This lets users show their records when they need to while the public still sees nothing.

Blocks arrive about every 75 seconds, which is faster than Bitcoin's roughly ten-minute cadence. Beyond that, the project does not describe ZEC as granting governance rights or staking rewards today.

Supply and tokenomics

ZEC has a hard cap of 21 million coins, the same ceiling as Bitcoin, and its issuance follows a halving schedule similar to Bitcoin's. New coins enter circulation as block rewards to miners, and the reward drops at each halving.

As of 2026-11-05, about 17.02 million ZEC were circulating, out of a total of roughly 17.03 million and the 21 million maximum. That means about four-fifths of the eventual supply already exists. Because nearly all of the maximum is expected to be issued by block rewards, the fully diluted value is about the same as the market cap, which stood near $21.97 billion at the time of writing. ZEC ranked around 10th by market cap, with about $959 million traded in the previous 24 hours.

The project describes a self-funded development model in which part of the block reward supports protocol development, rather than relying on a pre-sale to outside investors. Check the current rules for that allocation on the project's own pages, as the details have been revised over time.

The price was about $1,290 at that date. Prices move constantly, so treat all of these figures as a snapshot and not a guide.

Chains, holding and trading

ZEC lives on the Zcash blockchain, which is a standalone Layer 1. It is not issued on other chains in our data, so there is no widely listed wrapped or bridged version to rely on here.

The network currently uses Proof of Work with the Equihash algorithm. The project has talked about a planned upgrade called Crosslink that would move it toward Proof of Stake, aimed at better security, scalability and energy efficiency. Treat it as a roadmap item and not something already finished.

Most people hold ZEC in one of two ways. The first is a self-custody wallet, where you control the keys and can keep funds in the shielded Orchard pool. The project's own tutorial uses Zingo Wallet for that. The second is an account at a centralized exchange, which is simpler for buying and selling but means the exchange holds your coins.

Be aware that exchange availability for privacy coins varies by country and platform, and some venues restrict them. Deposits and withdrawals may use transparent addresses even when your own wallet supports shielded ones, which affects how private the transfer actually is.

History and notable events

Zcash's roots go back to 2013, when researchers proposed Zerocoin, a way to add private payments to Bitcoin. That work led to a new protocol and the Zcash launch on 2016-10-28. The project describes itself as the first cryptocurrency to apply zero-knowledge proofs to private peer-to-peer payments.

The data lists an all-time high of about $3,192 dated 2016-10-28, the launch day. Early trading on a brand-new asset was thin and unusual, so that figure says little about long-term value. At the time of writing the price was well below that level, though it had gained about 195% over the prior year and roughly 4% over the prior seven days.

The privacy tools have been upgraded over time. The Orchard pool, built on the Halo proof system, is the latest shielded design and removes the need for a trusted setup. The project reports that in 2025 more than 30% of all ZEC was held in fully shielded pools, a sign that more holders are using the private option. A report from April 2026 also described a sharp rally that month. Check dates and sources for any claim like this before relying on it.

Risks to understand

ZEC is volatile. A year-long rise of about 195% shows how far prices can swing, and swings can go the other way just as fast. Nothing here is a prediction or a reason to buy or sell.

Regulatory and listing risk is specific to privacy coins. Some exchanges and payment providers restrict them in certain regions because they make transaction tracing harder. That can limit where you can trade, deposit or withdraw. Rules differ by country, so check your local laws and any tax reporting duties.

Privacy is not automatic. Transparent transactions are public, and moving funds between transparent and shielded addresses can reveal links between them. Using a transparent exchange address on one side may leak information even if the rest of your activity is shielded.

Protocol risk exists too. Cryptography, wallet software and network upgrades can all contain bugs. The planned move from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake through Crosslink adds change, and change carries execution risk. Finally, mining concentration or shifts in hash power can affect security on any Proof-of-Work chain.

How to store ZEC safely

If you want to hold ZEC yourself, use a wallet that supports shielded addresses and download it from the project's official pages or a trusted app store. Check the publisher before installing, since fake wallet apps are a common scam.

When you create a wallet, you receive a recovery phrase. Write it on paper or metal, store it offline, and never type it into a website, share it in chat or keep it in a cloud note. Anyone with that phrase can take your funds, and no support team can restore it if you lose it.

Test with a small transfer before moving a large amount. Double-check the address, and confirm whether it is transparent or shielded, because the type affects both privacy and which wallets can send to it.

Keep your device updated, use a separate device or a hardware wallet where supported if the balance is large, and be careful with viewing keys, since they expose your transaction history to whoever holds them. If you leave coins on an exchange, you rely on its security, so enable two-factor authentication and withdraw what you do not plan to trade.

By the numbers

Zcash in numbers

Zcash (ZEC) is ranked #10 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $21.7B and a price of $1,275 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($21.7B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 0.7% over 7 days, down 5.1% over 30 days, up 142% over the past year. It trades about 60% below its all-time high of $3,192, set on Oct 28, 2016.

About 17.03M ZEC are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21M (81% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $1.38B, or 6.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

ZEC is the native token of Zcash. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

CoinGecko groups ZEC under Layer 1 tokens, Privacy coins, Zero-knowledge (ZK) tokens.

ZEC FAQs

What is Zcash (ZEC)?

Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency with its own blockchain. It uses zero-knowledge proofs so users can send shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver and amount, while transparent transactions remain available as an option.

How is Zcash different from Bitcoin?

Both have a 21 million coin cap and a halving schedule. Zcash adds optional shielded transactions, produces blocks about every 75 seconds, and has fees the project describes as a fraction of a cent. Bitcoin transactions are public by default.

Are all Zcash transactions private?

No. Users choose between transparent and shielded transactions. Only shielded ones are encrypted, and mixing the two types can reveal links, so how you use the wallet matters.

What is the maximum supply of ZEC?

The maximum supply is 21 million ZEC. As of 2026-11-05, about 17.02 million were in circulation, so most of the eventual supply has already been issued.

Is Zcash proof of work or proof of stake?

Zcash currently uses Proof of Work with the Equihash algorithm. A planned upgrade called Crosslink aims to move it toward Proof of Stake, but it is a roadmap item and not a finished change.

Can Zcash transactions be audited?

Yes, through viewing keys. A holder can share a key that lets a chosen party, such as an auditor, see details of specific shielded transactions without being able to spend the funds.

What is the market cap of Zcash?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Zcash had a market cap of about $21.7B, ranking #10 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of ZEC?

Zcash's all-time high is $3,192, reached on Oct 28, 2016. Its all-time low is $16.08 (Jul 4, 2024). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of ZEC?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 17.03M ZEC were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.

Which blockchains is ZEC on?

ZEC is the native token of Zcash.
