What Decred is

Decred (DCR) is the native coin of its own Layer 1 blockchain, launched in February 2016. Its code began as a fork of Bitcoin's and was then modified, with the aim of giving coin holders a formal say in how the network changes over time. The project describes itself as a community-directed digital currency intended to be a long-term store of value, and as an attempt at a decentralized autonomous organization.

The central idea is that Bitcoin-style networks often leave governance to informal debate among developers, miners and companies. Decred tries to replace that with on-chain voting that holders can take part in. The network uses a hybrid of Proof of Work and Proof of Stake, so two groups share influence over the chain rather than one.

Decred is also grouped with privacy coins, because it supports optional privacy features. At the time of writing it ranks around 152nd by market capitalization, so it is a mid-to-small project in the wider market.

What DCR is used for

DCR works first as a digital currency that can be sent, received and held. Its second role is governance and security. Holders can lock coins to buy tickets, which give the right to vote on blocks and on proposals about how the network and its treasury should develop. Ticket holders therefore act as a check on miners.

The project also funds development from a treasury built into the protocol. Part of each block reward goes to that treasury, and spending is meant to be decided through stakeholder votes instead of by a private company.

DCR is also one of the assets supported by DCRDEX, a decentralized exchange that Decred announced in October 2020. At launch it allowed swaps between Decred, Bitcoin and Litecoin, without a custodian holding user funds. Beyond these uses, the public materials emphasize governance and store-of-value goals rather than a wide set of dApp functions.

Supply and tokenomics

Decred has a hard cap of 21 million coins, the same ceiling as Bitcoin. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, about 17.68 million DCR are in circulation, which is roughly 84% of the maximum. Total supply is almost identical to circulating supply, so the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap, at about $228.7 million.

New coins come from block rewards, which are split between the groups that secure and govern the network: miners, ticket-holding voters and the development treasury. The reward declines on a schedule over time, so issuance slows as the cap approaches.

I have no verified detail on a premine beyond what the project itself publishes, so check the project's documentation for the exact launch distribution before drawing conclusions. The price was about $12.94 as of 2026-11-05.

Chains, holding and trading

DCR runs on its own chain and is not the native coin of any other network, nor is it issued as a token on other chains in the data reviewed here. Its consensus combines Proof of Work, using the Blake-256 hashing algorithm, with Proof of Stake voting through tickets.

People commonly hold DCR in the project's own wallet software, which supports staking through tickets and voting, or in hardware wallets that support the coin. Some centralized exchanges list DCR, usually against USDT or other major pairs. DCRDEX offers a non-custodial route in which swaps happen directly between users' wallets.

Trading volume is thin relative to market size. About $439,660 changed hands in 24 hours as of 2026-11-05. Low volume can make larger orders move the price and widen the gap between buy and sell quotes.

History and notable events

Decred launched on 2016-02-08, making it one of the older projects in the market. Its recorded all-time low was about $0.43, on 2016-12-25. It reached an all-time high of about $247.35 on 2021-04-16, during the broad market peak of that cycle.

Since then the price has fallen heavily. As of 2026-11-05 it is down about 65.5% over one year and about 8.7% over seven days, and far below its peak. These are descriptions of past movement and say nothing about the future.

Other milestones include the DCRDEX launch in October 2020 and a later integration announcement in May 2021. The project's governance model has also been tested through repeated community votes on proposals, which is a distinguishing feature compared with many chains.

Risks to understand

Price risk is high. DCR has dropped sharply from its peak, and a coin of this size can swing widely on small flows. Thin liquidity adds to the risk, especially when you want to sell a larger position.

Adoption risk matters too. Decred competes with larger Layer 1 networks and with other privacy coins, and its governance model only works if holders keep participating. Low participation would weaken the argument for the design.

There are also regulatory risks around privacy-oriented coins, as some exchanges restrict or delist them in certain regions. Check the rules where you live. Finally, locking coins in tickets means they are not freely spendable for a period, so understand the timing before staking.

This page is general information, not financial advice, and it does not suggest buying or selling.

How to store DCR safely

For anything beyond a small trading balance, move DCR off exchanges and into a wallet where you hold the keys. The official Decred wallet software supports both ordinary use and ticket staking, and hardware wallets that support DCR add protection against malware on your computer.

Write your recovery seed on paper or metal, store it offline in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website or share it. Test a small transfer before moving a large amount. Download wallet software only from the project's official channels and verify what you install.

Be careful with staking: tickets are locked for a time, and wallet backups should be kept up to date. Be wary of anyone offering to stake or manage DCR for you in exchange for guaranteed returns, as those offers are a common scam pattern.

By the numbers

Decred in numbers

Decred (DCR) is ranked #152 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $222M and a price of $12.57 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($222M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 7.9% over 7 days, down 30.7% over 30 days, down 66.8% over the past year. It trades about 95% below its all-time high of $247.35, set on Apr 16, 2021.

About 17.68M DCR are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21M (84% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $623K, or 0.3% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

CoinGecko groups DCR under Layer 1 tokens, Privacy coins.

DCR FAQs

What is Decred (DCR)?

Decred is a cryptocurrency launched in February 2016 whose code started as a fork of Bitcoin's. It combines mining with ticket-based voting so that coin holders help decide how the network changes and how its treasury is spent.

What is DCR used for?

DCR is used as a currency, for locking into staking tickets that vote on blocks and proposals, and as an asset on DCRDEX, a decentralized exchange. The project's main focus is governance and long-term store of value.

How many DCR coins are there?

The maximum supply is 21 million DCR. As of 2026-11-05, about 17.68 million are in circulation, so most of the cap has already been issued.

Is Decred Proof of Work or Proof of Stake?

Decred uses a hybrid system. Miners use Proof of Work with the Blake-256 hash, while ticket holders add Proof of Stake voting that validates blocks and decides on proposals.

Is Decred a privacy coin?

It is described as a privacy coin by some categorizations because of optional privacy features, but it is mainly known for governance. Privacy-related coins can face restrictions on some exchanges, so check local rules.

Why is the DCR price so far below its high?

It is far below its April 2021 all-time high of about $247.35 and down about 65.5% over the past year as of 2026-11-05. Market-wide conditions and relatively low trading volume both play a part, but no single cause is certain.

What is the market cap of Decred?

As of Nov 6, 2026, Decred had a market cap of about $222M, ranking #152 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of DCR?

Decred's all-time high is $247.35, reached on Apr 16, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.4315 (Dec 25, 2016). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of DCR?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 17.68M DCR were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.
