What Legacy Frax Dollar is
Legacy Frax Dollar (FRAX) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin that began as the first fractional-algorithmic stablecoin. Instead of being backed fully by dollars, as many stablecoins are, or by nothing but code, the original design held a partial collateral reserve and relied on algorithmic mechanisms for the rest. The project describes it that way, and that is where the "fractional" in the name comes from.
The word "Legacy" matters. The Frax ecosystem has since been reorganised, and the older FRAX token is now labelled as the legacy version. Project material also says the FRAX ticker has been tied to a different asset on Fraxtal, with the earlier FXS governance token converting into it one-to-one when bridged. That makes the name confusing, so check exactly which contract and chain you are dealing with before doing anything.
At the time of writing, data aggregators list Legacy FRAX in the DeFi and stablecoin categories, ranked around 159th by market capitalisation. It is best understood as a historical stablecoin that is still tradable and still sits in some on-chain pools, not as the centre of the current Frax product line.
What the token is used for
The purpose of FRAX was to act as a stable unit of account on-chain, roughly one US dollar per token. Holders could use it to move value between wallets, supply it to lending markets, provide liquidity in decentralised exchange pools, or park funds in a dollar-like asset without leaving crypto.
Because it is a standard token on many networks, it can be used wherever the relevant contract is supported, such as automated market makers and money-market protocols. Support varies by chain and changes over time, and since the token is now labelled legacy, many applications have reduced or stopped promoting it. Do not assume a dApp still lists it just because it did previously.
FRAX is not a governance token and does not itself carry voting rights. In the original Frax system, a separate token called Frax Share (FXS) handled governance and captured value from the protocol. The public facts available here do not describe any other utility for Legacy FRAX beyond being a dollar-pegged stablecoin, so this page keeps the use case brief rather than guessing.
Supply and tokenomics
As of 2026-11-05, about 219.2 million Legacy FRAX tokens were reported in circulation, and the total supply figure is the same. No maximum supply is listed. Because a stablecoin's supply expands and contracts as users mint and redeem, a fixed cap is not part of the design in the way it is for assets like Bitcoin.
With the price near one dollar, the market capitalisation and fully diluted value both come to roughly $217 million. Trading volume over 24 hours was thin at about $215,000, which is small compared with the size of the supply. Low volume relative to supply can make the market price drift from the peg or move sharply on a single large order.
The original mechanism used a collateral ratio that the protocol adjusted depending on market demand, with the uncollateralised part supported by FXS. Specific current parameters for the legacy token are not, so they are not stated here. Aggregator pages also show an all-time high and low far from one dollar. For a stablecoin these are likely to reflect brief or thin-market prints and should be treated with caution.
Chains and how it is held and traded
Legacy FRAX is listed as issued on many networks: Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Polygon zkEVM, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Fantom, Harmony, Boba, Aurora, Moonbeam, Moonriver and Evmos. It is not the native coin of any chain. Many of these deployments are bridged versions, so the token on one network may depend on a bridge's security as well as on the Frax design.
People typically hold it in a self-custody wallet that supports the relevant network, or on an exchange that lists it. Trading generally happens in two ways: on centralised exchanges, where liquidity can be thin for a legacy asset, and on decentralised exchanges, where you swap against a liquidity pool using your own wallet.
Before swapping, confirm the contract address from a trusted source, because stablecoin lookalikes are common. Also check that you are on the correct network, since the same symbol can exist on several chains with different liquidity and different bridge risks. Sending tokens to the wrong chain can make them hard or impossible to recover.
History and notable events
FRAX was introduced as an experiment in a middle path between fully collateralised stablecoins and purely algorithmic ones. It was widely described as the first fractional-algorithmic stablecoin, and it became a prominent DeFi asset because it was integrated into many pools and lending markets across multiple networks. The exact launch date is not, so it is not stated here.
Over time the Frax project broadened beyond a single stablecoin. It built a wider set of products and its own chain, Fraxtal. As part of that shift, the naming changed: the original FRAX was relabelled Legacy Frax Dollar, and project communication says FXS holders can bridge to Fraxtal and convert one-to-one into a token carrying the FRAX ticker. Legacy FXS is said to remain on Ethereum for holders who do not convert.
This rebranding is the most important notable event for anyone researching the token today. Older articles, tutorials and screenshots may describe FRAX in its previous form, so check the date and context of any source you rely on.
Risks
The first risk is the peg. Any stablecoin can trade below or above one dollar, and algorithmic or partly collateralised designs have a mixed record across the industry. Legacy FRAX has recently traded slightly under a dollar, at about $0.99 as of 2026-11-05, which is small but shows the peg is not guaranteed.
Liquidity is a second concern. Daily volume is low compared with the supply, so larger trades may incur noticeable slippage, and the exit options may narrow if exchanges or protocols drop support for a legacy asset.
Third, naming confusion creates practical risk. The FRAX ticker now has overlapping meanings across the Frax ecosystem, and sending or swapping the wrong asset is an avoidable mistake.
Fourth, bridged versions add smart-contract and bridge risk. A failure in a bridge can affect the token on a given chain even if the original design is working as intended.
Finally, there is regulatory and issuer-structure uncertainty that affects stablecoins generally. None of this is a recommendation to buy or sell. It is a list of things to understand before holding the token.
How to store it safely
For anything beyond small amounts, a self-custody wallet is generally safer than leaving tokens on an exchange. A hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline and is a common choice for larger holdings. Write down your recovery phrase on paper, store it somewhere secure, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.
Before sending funds, do a small test transfer, and confirm that the network matches the chain you intend to use. Verify the token contract address from a source you trust rather than from a search ad or a message sent to you.
When you connect a wallet to a dApp, review the token approval you are signing. Unlimited approvals can be abused if a protocol is compromised, so revoke permissions you no longer need. Consider keeping a separate wallet for experimenting with DeFi and another for long-term storage.
Because Legacy FRAX is now a legacy asset, periodically check whether the protocols and exchanges you use still support it, so you are not caught holding a token with few ways to exit.
By the numbers
Legacy Frax Dollar in numbers
Legacy Frax Dollar (FRAX) is ranked #153 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $217M and a price of $0.9909 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($217M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was up 0.0% over 7 days, down 0.1% over 30 days, down 0.4% over the past year. It trades about 40% below its all-time high of $1.66, set on Mar 30, 2026.
About 219.17M FRAX are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $362K, or 0.2% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
FRAX has token contracts on 14 chains we track, including Ethereum, Aurora, Moonriver, Moonbeam. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

FRAX FAQs
What is Legacy Frax Dollar (FRAX)?
It is a dollar-pegged stablecoin that launched as the first fractional-algorithmic design, using partial collateral plus algorithmic mechanisms. It is now labelled "Legacy" because the Frax ecosystem has been reorganised and the FRAX ticker has been linked to a different asset on Fraxtal.
Is the new FRAX the same as Legacy FRAX?
Not necessarily. Project material says FXS holders can bridge to Fraxtal and convert one-to-one into a token with the FRAX ticker, which is different from the legacy stablecoin. Always check the contract address and network before you transact.
Is Legacy FRAX still worth one dollar?
It is designed to trade near one US dollar, but that is not guaranteed. As of 2026-11-05 it was about $0.99. Low trading volume means the price can drift from the peg, especially on larger orders.
Which blockchains support Legacy FRAX?
The data lists it on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Polygon zkEVM, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Fantom, Harmony, Boba, Aurora, Moonbeam, Moonriver and Evmos. Many of these are bridged versions, so bridge risk applies.
What is the supply of Legacy FRAX?
No fixed maximum supply is listed. About 219 million tokens were in circulation as of 2026-11-05, and supply can change as users mint and redeem under the stablecoin's design.
How should I store Legacy FRAX?
A self-custody wallet that supports the correct network is a common choice, ideally a hardware wallet for larger amounts. Verify contract addresses, test with a small transfer, and keep your recovery phrase offline and private.
What is the market cap of Legacy Frax Dollar?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Legacy Frax Dollar had a market cap of about $217M, ranking #153 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of FRAX?
Legacy Frax Dollar's all-time high is $1.66, reached on Mar 30, 2026. Its all-time low is $0.2498 (Jun 24, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of FRAX?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 219.17M FRAX were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
Which blockchains is FRAX on?
It has token contracts on Ethereum, Aurora, Moonriver, Moonbeam, Evmos, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Polygon zkEVM and 6 more.
