AURORA

Aurora is an EVM-compatible layer that runs on the NEAR Protocol. Instead of being a separate base chain, it is a virtual machine deployed on NEAR, so Ethereum-style smart contracts and wallets can work there while NEAR provides the underlying consensus and scaling. Developers can port Solidity apps with few changes, and users connect with the wallets they already know.

The network has its own token, AURORA, but its documentation explains that Aurora operations consume NEAR, which means NEAR plays the central role in fees. Aurora has also promoted Aurora Cloud, a tool for launching custom chains, including ones with fees paid in a stablecoin. Fees depend on NEAR network conditions, so check current costs in your wallet before you transact.

The DeFi side is small, with about $3.8M in TVL at the time of writing, and our site lists 34 dApps connected to the chain. Native projects include the Trisolaris and WannaSwap DEXes and the Aurigami lending market. Much of the rest is multichain: Meta Pool for liquid staking on NEAR, bridges and swap tools such as Stargate V2, cBridge, Symbiosis, Meson and Chainspot, plus the Sender wallet, the Hyve freelancing marketplace and the RubyScore reputation service. Use the scores and TVL figures below to compare projects before you connect a wallet.

Aurora FAQs

What is Aurora?

Aurora is an EVM-compatible environment that runs as a smart contract on the NEAR Protocol blockchain. Developers can deploy Ethereum-style contracts there, and users connect with familiar Ethereum wallets, while NEAR handles the underlying consensus and settlement.

Does Aurora use its own token for gas fees?

Not exactly. Aurora has its own token, AURORA, but according to its documentation the network runs on top of NEAR, and NEAR is the token consumed during Aurora operations. AURORA is mainly tied to the ecosystem and its governance rather than being the everyday fee token.

Can I use Ethereum wallets and tools on Aurora?

Yes. Aurora is EVM-compatible, so Ethereum wallets and Solidity-based contracts generally work with it. One of the wallets listed on our site, Sender, supports Aurora alongside NEAR, Ethereum and several other networks.

Which dApps are built specifically on Aurora?

Native Aurora projects on our list include Trisolaris and WannaSwap (both DEXes) and Aurigami (lending). Many other listed dApps, such as Meta Pool and Chainspot, are multichain and also support Aurora among their networks.

How big is the Aurora DeFi ecosystem?

Aurora's DeFi TVL is small, about $3.8M at the time of writing. That is far below the figures for many larger chains, so liquidity can be thin and some protocols have very little capital. Check the TVL and the activity of any dApp before using it.

What are the risks of using dApps on Aurora?

Smart contract bugs, thin liquidity, bridge risk and low-activity projects are the main concerns. Our scores reflect this: the smaller Aurora-native dApps rate lower than the large multichain protocols. Only use funds you can afford to lose, and do your own research on each project.

What is the largest dApp on Aurora by TVL?

Gate is the largest dApp on Aurora by total value locked, with $5.84B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by NEAR Intents ($189M) and Meta Pool Near ($79.9M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on Aurora has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of Stargate V2 (7.6) and Meta Pool Near (7.4). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on Aurora?

DappsAtlas tracks 36 dApps on Aurora. Of these, 36 have a full review and 27 report value locked, $6.23B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on Aurora?

Cross Chain Bridge (7), DEXes (6) and Staking (2) are the largest categories on Aurora, by number of projects.

Which dApps on Aurora grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Stargate V2 had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+5.5%) and Meta Pool Near the biggest drop (−11.3%). Combined TVL moved −4.6% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on Aurora?

The 26 rated dApps on Aurora average 6.0 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 5 score below 5.
