Insurance dApps let people buy protection against crypto-specific losses, such as a smart contract exploit, a stablecoin losing its peg or a custody failure. Others work more like reinsurance, where investors supply capital that backs real-world or on-chain risk. The category is small and varied, so products that look similar can work in very different ways.

Most protocols follow a pooled model. Underwriters or stakers deposit funds into a pool, buyers pay a premium for a defined policy, and a claims process, often a member vote or a set of rules, decides payouts. The protocol earns money through fees on premiums, and capital providers earn a share of those premiums in return for taking on risk. Nexus Mutual is a member-run mutual, Firelight backs cover with staked FXRP on Flare, and Ensuro and Re Protocol focus on reinsurance-style capital. Native takes a different route as a broker placing Lloyd's-backed and onchain policies.

When comparing options, look at what the policy actually covers and excludes, how claims are assessed, and which chains are supported. Check pool size and cover limits, since some protocols such as Bridge Mutual, Tidal Finance and Risk Harbor now hold very little capital. Also consider whether a product is still actively developed, as Lunos has shifted away from its original insurance focus. DeFi cover is not regulated insurance, so read the terms carefully and never rely on it as a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is DeFi insurance the same as traditional insurance?

No. Most DeFi cover is not regulated insurance and does not come with the protections of a licensed insurer. Many protocols, such as Nexus Mutual and Bridge Mutual, run discretionary or mutual-style cover, which means a claim is decided by a vote or by policy wording rather than by a legal right to be paid. Read the terms before you buy.

What does crypto insurance usually cover?

Typical cover includes smart contract exploits, stablecoin depegs and some custody failures, depending on the product. Opencover and Tidal Finance, for example, describe cover for hacks and depegs. Each policy defines exactly which events count, and losses from price drops or user mistakes are usually excluded.

How do people earn yield from insurance protocols?

Underwriters or stakers deposit capital into a pool and earn a share of premiums for taking on risk. If a valid claim is paid, that capital can be used to cover it, so stakers can lose some or all of their deposit. Yields therefore reflect real risk and are not guaranteed.

Does TVL tell me whether a cover protocol can pay claims?

Pool size is one indicator of how much a protocol could pay out, though it is not a guarantee. At the time of writing, Firelight shows about $68.3M in TVL, while Risk Harbor and Bridge Mutual show very small pools. A small pool may only be able to cover small claims, so check the pool and cover limits before relying on a policy.

What is the difference between Native and a protocol like Nexus Mutual?

Native is a specialist broker that places Lloyd's-backed and onchain cover mainly for teams and financial institutions, and not a pooled protocol that anyone can join. It suits organizations looking for formal policies. Individual DeFi users will usually look at protocols like Nexus Mutual or Opencover.

Are there risks in using DeFi insurance itself?

Yes, smart contract bugs, governance decisions, oracle problems and a disputed claim process can all affect you. Some tokens used in these systems are also volatile, which can change how much a pool is worth. Treat cover as one layer of risk management and not a replacement for spreading your funds across platforms.

What is the largest insurance dApp by TVL?

Firelight is the largest insurance dApp by total value locked, with $60.7M. It is followed by Easedefi.org ($4.86M) and Unslashed ($3.31M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which insurance dApp has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Native has the highest score at 7.4/10, ahead of Firelight (7.0) and Easedefi.org (6.8). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many insurance dApps does DappsAtlas track?

DappsAtlas tracks 28 insurance dApps. Of these, 28 have a full review and 16 report value locked, $73.0M in total.

What chains do most insurance dApps run on?

Ethereum is the most common, with 16 of 28 insurance dApps, followed by Arbitrum (6) and Polygon (5). 36% are deployed on more than one chain.

Which insurance dApps grew the most this week?

Among insurance dApps with at least $1M locked, Easedefi.org had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+30.8%) and Firelight the biggest drop (−7.0%). Combined TVL moved −4.4% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for insurance dApps?

The 15 rated insurance dApps average 5.6 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 3 score below 5.
