Crypto index dApps package several tokens, or a set of strategies, into a single token or vault. Instead of buying ten assets and rebalancing them yourself, you hold one token whose contents and weights are set by the protocol or by a manager. Some indexes track a broad spot basket, some follow a theme such as meme coins or stablecoin yield, and some offer leveraged or yield-focused products.

These protocols run on smart contracts. You deposit assets or buy the index token, and the contracts hold the underlying tokens and rebalance them on a schedule or through auctions. Revenue usually comes from fees: a streaming or management fee on assets, charges when you mint or redeem, and, for manager-run vaults, a performance fee. Governance tokens, such as RSR for Reserve Protocol, often give holders a say over parameters and a claim on part of that revenue.

When comparing options, start with what the product actually holds and how it rebalances. Then check fees, the chains supported, liquidity for redeeming, and audits. TVL gives a rough sense of adoption: SoSoValue Indexes, Enzyme Finance and Reserve Protocol lead this list, followed by Chamber Vaults and Index Coop. Also consider whether you want a passive basket or a manager-run strategy, and treat small or discontinued projects, such as Set Protocol, with extra caution. This is general information, not financial advice.

Some products here, such as leveraged tokens, behave in ways that can resemble speculative trading. If you also use gambling or casino products, you must be 18+ (21+ where required) and should check that online gambling is legal where you live.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crypto index dApp?

A crypto index dApp bundles several tokens into one tokenized basket, or manages a set of positions for you. You hold a single token that represents your share, and the protocol handles rebalancing according to its rules. It is a way to get diversified exposure without buying and tracking each asset yourself.

How do index protocols charge fees?

Most charge a management or streaming fee, plus fees on minting, redeeming or rebalancing, and sometimes a performance fee on vault strategies. Some protocols take a share of these fees for their treasury or token holders. Check the fee schedule for each product, since gas costs and slippage during rebalancing add to the total.

Are crypto indexes safe compared with holding single tokens?

No. Smart contracts can have bugs, underlying tokens can fall sharply, and a basket tracks its holdings, so it falls when they fall. Leveraged or yield-based products carry extra risks, and manager-run vaults depend on the manager's decisions. Small or inactive protocols may also have thin liquidity, which makes exiting harder.

What is the difference between index tokens and manager-run vaults?

Enzyme Finance and Chamber Vaults (formerly dHEDGE) are built around managers who run on-chain funds or vaults that depositors can follow. Nested and Velvet V1 also lean on social or copy-style strategies. In these products, the manager's track record and fee terms matter as much as the protocol itself.

Is Set Protocol still active?

Set Protocol's developer, Set Labs, has ended development of V2 and the TokenSets interface, so it is best treated as a legacy product. If you hold Set tokens, check the project's official notices on how to redeem or exit. Some other listed protocols have very low TVL, which is worth weighing before depositing.

Does a higher TVL mean an index protocol is better?

Not necessarily, but it is a useful signal. Higher TVL, as with SoSoValue Indexes and Enzyme Finance at the time of writing, suggests more users have put money in, though it does not guarantee safety. Also look at audits, how long the contracts have run, liquidity for redeeming, and how clearly the protocol explains its rebalancing and fees.

What is the largest index by TVL?

SoSoValue Indexes is the largest index by total value locked, with $94.8M. It is followed by Enzyme Finance ($89.0M) and Reserve Protocol ($46.4M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which index has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Enzyme Finance has the highest score at 7.6/10, ahead of Chamber Vaults (7.4) and Index Coop (7.3). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many indexes does DappsAtlas track?

DappsAtlas tracks 40 indexes. Of these, 40 have a full review and 29 report value locked, $285M in total.

What chains do most indexes run on?

Ethereum is the most common, with 23 of 40 indexes, followed by BNB Chain (10) and Polygon (9). 42% are deployed on more than one chain.

Which indexes grew the most this week?

Among indexes with at least $1M locked, SoSoValue Basis had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+0.1%) and SoSoValue Indexes the biggest drop (−4.8%). Combined TVL moved −2.6% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for indexes?

The 22 rated indexes average 5.8 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 4 score below 5.
