The XRP Ledger, usually called XRPL, is an open-source public blockchain built around fast, low-cost value transfer. It does not use proof-of-work mining or proof-of-stake staking. Instead, a set of validators runs a consensus protocol to agree on each new ledger version. XRPL is not an EVM chain: it has its own transaction types, and it includes a built-in order book and automated market maker pools, so basic trading does not require smart contracts.

XRP is the native token. It pays the small transaction fees on the network and serves as a bridge asset between other tokens. XRP was created in 2014, and fees are normally tiny compared with the cost of a swap on a busy smart contract chain. DeFi TVL on XRPL was about $37.1M at the time of writing, so on-chain activity is modest in size.

The 62 dApps on this page lean toward exchanges and bridges. XRPL DEX is the native trading layer. FAssets lets XRP holders mint wrapped tokens on Flare, and Doppler Finance offers a yield product aimed at XRP holders. Coinbase Bridge and THORChain DEX handle cross-chain movement. Many listings, such as Binance, OKX, Bitget, Gate, HTX and Deribit, are centralized exchanges that support XRP, so the large TVL numbers beside them are exchange reserves across several chains, not XRPL DeFi.

Frequently asked questions

What is the XRP Ledger (XRPL)?

The XRP Ledger is an open-source public blockchain that was built for fast, low-cost transfers of XRP, other tokens and fiat-backed assets. XRP, its native token, dates to 2014. Ripple is a company that works with the ledger, but it is not the same thing as the ledger or the token.

Is XRPL an EVM chain?

No. XRPL uses its own transaction types and a native trading layer rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Ethereum-style smart contract apps do not run on it directly. Projects such as FAssets bring XRP into DeFi by wrapping it on Flare, which is a separate network.

How does XRPL reach consensus?

XRPL does not use proof-of-work mining or proof-of-stake staking. Instead, validators run a consensus process to agree on each new ledger version. This is why it is described as distinct from the mechanisms most other blockchains rely on.

What is XRP used for, and how do fees work?

XRP is used to pay the small fees that transactions require. It is also the native asset on the ledger and is widely traded on exchanges. Fees are usually low, but check the current amount in your wallet before you send.

How big is DeFi on XRPL?

The DeFi TVL on XRPL was about $37.1M at the time of writing, which is modest next to the largest smart contract chains. The much larger TVL figures beside exchanges such as Binance, OKX and Bitget are reserves counted across several chains, not value locked in XRPL DeFi alone.

Are the exchanges listed here the same as using DeFi on XRPL?

Most of the 62 listings are centralized exchanges that support XRP, so you hold an account with the platform rather than your own keys. That adds custody, account and verification requirements, and the rules vary by country. Check the terms and local rules before you deposit, and only use services available where you live.

What is the largest dApp on XRP Ledger by TVL?

Binance CEX is the largest dApp on XRP Ledger by total value locked, with $127B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by OKX ($28.4B) and Coinbase Bridge ($7.67B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on XRP Ledger has the highest DappsAtlas score?

OKX has the highest score at 8.0/10, ahead of Deribit (7.8) and Gate (7.7). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on XRP Ledger?

DappsAtlas tracks 65 dApps on XRP Ledger. Of these, 65 have a full review and 46 report value locked, $193B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on XRP Ledger?

Centralized Exchanges (31), DEXes (9) and Bridge (5) are the largest categories on XRP Ledger, by number of projects.

Which dApps on XRP Ledger grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, HbarSuite had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+6.9%) and VALR the biggest drop (−28.4%). Combined TVL moved −4.2% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on XRP Ledger?

The 51 rated dApps on XRP Ledger average 6.4 out of 10. Of these, 1 score 8 or higher and 4 score below 5.
