Centralized exchanges, or CEXs, are company-run platforms where you open an account, pass identity checks, deposit funds, and trade through the operator's order book. The exchange holds your assets in custody and records your balance internally. This is different from a decentralized exchange, where you trade from your own wallet through smart contracts. This page lists 64 exchanges, with the TVL shown reflecting the on-chain reserves each one holds at the time of writing.
These platforms earn mainly from trading fees on spot, margin, futures, and perpetual markets. Many add revenue from earn and staking products, lending, tokenized stocks or forex markets, copy trading, bots, and their own exchange tokens, such as OKX's OKB or SwissBorg's BORG. Because they match orders off-chain, they can offer fast execution and deep liquidity, but you depend on the operator for security and withdrawals.
When comparing exchanges, look at licensing and the countries each one serves, fee levels, asset and market coverage, and how much leverage it offers. Also consider the quality of its reserve disclosures. Binance, OKX, and Bitget lead on size and breadth, Deribit focuses on options, and Bitvavo and SwissBorg target European users under MiCA. Trading crypto is risky, so you must be of legal age (18+, or 21+ where required) and confirm that it is legal where you live.

Frequently asked questions
What is a centralized crypto exchange?
A centralized exchange is a company-run platform where you create an account, verify your identity, and trade through the company's order book. The exchange holds your assets in custody and matches buyers and sellers. A decentralized exchange instead runs on smart contracts and lets you trade from your own wallet.
Is a centralized exchange a dApp?
Not in the strict sense. CEXs are operated by companies, not by open smart contracts, which is why they are listed in a separate category from on-chain protocols. They appear in on-chain data because their wallets hold public reserves, and the TVL figures shown here come from those holdings.
How do centralized exchanges make money?
Most CEXs earn from trading fees on spot and derivatives markets. Others add revenue from margin and futures funding, listing fees, lending and earn products, and spreads on instant conversions. Some advertise zero spot fees, such as Ourbit and OrangeX, and make money elsewhere in the product mix.
What is the main risk of using a CEX?
Your coins sit in the exchange's custody, so you rely on the company to stay solvent and secure. If it is hacked, freezes withdrawals, or fails, you can lose access to funds. Many people keep only what they plan to trade on an exchange and move the rest to a wallet they control.
Are centralized exchanges regulated?
Regulation varies by country. Some exchanges in this list state they hold regional authorizations, for example Bitvavo and SwissBorg under MiCA in Europe, or VALR in Africa. Check the exchange's own licensing page and confirm it accepts users from your country before you sign up. Do not try to get around geographic limits or identity checks.
Which exchange is best for my needs?
It depends on what you need. Spot traders usually compare fees and asset coverage, while derivatives traders look at leverage limits and liquidity. Deribit is known for Bitcoin and Ethereum options, and Pionex for built-in trading bots. Beginners in Europe may prefer a local, euro-based platform such as Bitvavo.
Is there an age limit or legal requirement to trade?
Crypto trading and leveraged products carry a high risk of loss, and you must be at least 18 (21 in some places) to use them. Rules on crypto trading and gambling-like products differ by jurisdiction, so check that they are legal where you live before opening an account.
What is the largest centralized exchange by TVL?
Binance CEX is the largest centralized exchange by total value locked, with $127B. It is followed by OKX ($28.4B) and Robinhood ($13.7B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
