Our verdict on Bitvavo

7.9/10

Bitvavo suits euro-based users in Europe who want a regulated, simple exchange with low stated fees and a wide asset list. Its main strength is MiCA authorization by the AFM combined with 0.00%–0.25% trading fees. The main caveat is that staking and lending fall outside MiCA protections, and leverage can wipe out your capital. Keep in mind that funds held on any exchange carry custody risk.

What is Bitvavo?

Bitvavo is a centralized crypto exchange based in Amsterdam. DefiLlama describes it as the largest EUR-spot exchange globally, and the company says it lets users buy, sell and store over 400 digital assets.

It claims more than 2 million active users and a 4/5 Trustpilot rating from 17,600 reviews. These are self-reported figures from the homepage and have not been independently verified here.

The product range covers a beginner app, Pro Mode for experienced traders, staking, recurring buys, leverage trading and services for institutions. DefiLlama tracks about 357 million USD in exchange wallet holdings across several chains.

How Bitvavo works

Bitvavo is a centralized exchange. You deposit euros or crypto into an account, and the company holds the assets and matches buy and sell orders on its own order books. You do not hold private keys for assets kept on the exchange.

Users can buy and sell at market prices in the app, or place advanced orders in Pro Mode. Extra products include staking (Flex and Fixed), recurring buys, and leverage trading with long and short positions.

The DefiLlama entry lists the exchange's on-chain wallet holdings across chains including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana and Arbitrum, with a TVL figure of about 357 million USD. That reflects assets the exchange holds, not a DeFi protocol's locked funds.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Authorized as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA by the Dutch AFM
  • Stated trading fees of 0.00% to 0.25%
  • Over 400 assets, with 452 listed on its asset page
  • Account Guarantee of up to €100.000 for losses from unauthorized access
  • Instant euro deposits by SEPA among 8 payment methods, plus a Proof of Reserves page
  • Covers beginner and advanced users, with Recurring Buy, Pro Mode and an API

Watch out for

  • Staking and lending are not regulated under MiCA, so the safeguards for regulated services may not apply to them
  • Leverage is limited to 20 assets, and public sources state that margin trading can lead to total loss of the initial capital
  • As a centralized exchange it holds user funds, so users carry counterparty and custody risk
  • The Account Guarantee covers losses from unauthorized access only, up to the stated cap, and not market losses or other events
  • The site is focused on Europe, and the project does not say which countries are supported
  • One comparison result says Crypto.com has a smoother user experience, so ease of use is not unanimous

Bitvavo fees

Bitvavo says trading fees range from 0.00% to 0.25%, which it describes as among the lowest in the industry. USDC pairs in Pro Mode are listed at up to 0.05%.

Deposit, withdrawal and staking fees are not given publicly. The site has a dedicated Fees page and a Pricing Policy page where users can check current rates before trading.

Is Bitvavo safe?

Bitvavo states it is authorized under MiCA by the AFM and is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. It also publishes a Security page and a Proof of Reserves page, and offers the Account Guarantee for unauthorized access losses. DefiLlama lists no audits, which is normal for a centralized exchange.

Users still face custody risk because the exchange holds the assets. The site says staking and lending are not regulated under MiCA, so protections for regulated services may not extend to them. Public sources mention no incidents, but that does not prove there have been none. Crypto is highly volatile and leverage can lead to total loss of capital.

Who Bitvavo is for

Bitvavo is for European users who want to buy and trade crypto with euros through a regulated exchange. Beginners get a simple app, while experienced traders can use Pro Mode and leverage. It also targets institutions. It is less suitable for people who want to self-custody everything or who live outside its supported countries.
