Bitcoin is the first and largest blockchain. It records transactions on a public ledger that thousands of independent computers keep copies of. New blocks are added through proof of work, where miners compete to add the next block, which makes the history costly to rewrite. Bitcoin is not EVM-based and its base layer has limited scripting, so it is built to move and store value rather than run complex apps.
The native token is BTC, and it is also what you pay network fees in. Fees rise and fall with demand for block space, not with a fixed schedule. Because the base layer stays simple, much of the Bitcoin-related activity people call DeFi happens off-chain at exchanges or on other chains using tokens that represent BTC.
The 167 dApps we list for Bitcoin are mostly centralized exchanges and Bitcoin-backed tokens. The exchanges include Binance CEX, OKX, Robinhood, Bitget, Gate and Deribit, which is known for options. On the DeFi side, Babylon Protocol focuses on staking native BTC, while Lombard LBTC, Function FBTC, SolvBTC, Lorenzo enzoBTC and Bedrock uniBTC offer BTC-backed tokens for use on other chains. tBTC and Coinbase Bridge cover bridging and wrapped assets. Bitcoin DeFi TVL was about $4.02B at the time of writing.

Bitcoin FAQs
Is Bitcoin EVM compatible?
No. Bitcoin's base layer uses its own scripting system and does not run Ethereum-style smart contracts. Most Bitcoin-linked dApps work through exchanges, wrapped or tokenized BTC on other chains, or separate protocols such as Babylon that build around the Bitcoin network.
What token do you use on Bitcoin, and how do fees work?
The native token is BTC, and network fees are paid in BTC. Fees depend on how busy the network is and how large the transaction is in data terms, so they change over time. Miners or exchanges may add their own charges on top.
What kinds of dApps are listed for Bitcoin?
Most are centralized exchanges and Bitcoin-backed tokens rather than on-chain apps in the Ethereum sense. On this page you will find exchanges like Binance CEX, OKX, Robinhood and Deribit, along with Babylon Protocol, Lombard LBTC, Function FBTC, tBTC and Coinbase Bridge.
Is wrapped or tokenized Bitcoin the same as real BTC?
No. Tokens like LBTC, SolvBTC, enzoBTC and uniBTC are issued by protocols that say they are backed by BTC, so holding one means trusting the issuer, custodian or bridge design. Check how each token is backed, how redemption works and whether there is an audit before using it.
Why do exchanges show such large TVL figures here?
Because it counts BTC and other assets that exchanges hold in reserve, which is a different measure from funds locked in DeFi contracts. Binance CEX shows about $133B at the time of writing, far above the roughly $4B DeFi TVL for Bitcoin as a whole. Treat exchange figures as reserve size, not a DeFi activity measure.
What is Babylon Protocol?
Babylon Protocol lets holders stake native BTC or use it as collateral without wrapping or bridging it. Its listing shows about $3.27B in TVL at the time of writing. Staking and collateral features carry smart contract and protocol risk, so read the project's documentation before committing funds.
What is the largest dApp on Bitcoin by TVL?
Binance CEX is the largest dApp on Bitcoin by total value locked, with $127B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by OKX ($28.4B) and Robinhood ($13.7B). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
