Good
Our verdict on Circle Bitcoin
6.8/10cirBTC is a reasonable option for institutions and DeFi users who want BTC exposure on Ethereum from an issuer they already know. Its main strength is Circle's brand and infrastructure, plus the 1:1 backing and onchain reserve checks. The main caveat is that it is new and small next to WBTC and cbBTC. The custodian, audits and fees are not published, and you take on issuer and custody risk that native Bitcoin avoids. Review these points before holding a large position.

What is Circle Bitcoin?
Circle Bitcoin, branded cirBTC, is a wrapped Bitcoin token from Circle, the company behind USDC and EURC. Circle announced it in April 2026 as part of a push from stablecoins into other digital assets. Reports put its Ethereum launch in June 2026.
Circle describes it as an institutional-grade wrapped BTC, backed 1:1 by BTC, verifiable onchain and built for global markets. The stated uses are borrowing, lending, liquidity and settlement in DeFi, plus OTC trading.
The market it targets is already crowded. WBTC is the long-standing leader, and Coinbase's cbBTC is another large issuer-backed option. Media coverage frames cirBTC as a challenger. Its total value locked is about $17.7 million, and it fell sharply over a recent week, so it is still small.
Circle's brand and regulatory profile are the main draw. The unknowns are the BTC custodian, any audits, and the fee terms. The project does not publish these in the material reviewed.
How Circle Bitcoin works
Wrapped Bitcoin lets BTC be used on a chain that is not Bitcoin. A custodian holds real BTC, and an equal amount of a token is issued on Ethereum. The token can be traded or used in DeFi apps, and it can be redeemed for the BTC behind it.
cirBTC follows this model. Circle issues the token and says each unit is backed 1:1 by BTC. One report says the BTC is held in separate custody. The backing is meant to be checkable onchain, and one source says Chainlink supplies real-time reserve data.
Circle sells cirBTC mainly to institutions and DeFi users. It is meant for lending, borrowing, liquidity and settlement, and it fits next to Circle's USDC infrastructure and its Mint service for creating and redeeming tokens.
6 features
Key features
01
1:1 BTC backing
Circle says each cirBTC is backed one-to-one by BTC, and that the backing can be verified onchain.
02
Ethereum ERC-20 token
The token is an ERC-20 live on Ethereum, so it works with wallets and DeFi protocols on that network.
03
Onchain reserve verification
One report says Chainlink provides real-time reserve data, which lets holders check backing without waiting for periodic attestations.
04
Institutional mint and redeem
Circle's Mint service covers minting, redeeming and reserve management for USDC, EURC and cirBTC at institutional scale.
05
DeFi and OTC use cases
Circle pitches cirBTC for borrowing, lending, liquidity and settlement, and for OTC and institutional markets.
06
Circle ecosystem fit
The token sits alongside USDC, EURC, CCTP, Gateway and the Arc blockchain in Circle's wider infrastructure.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Issued by Circle, a well-known stablecoin company with existing mint, redeem and reserve infrastructure.
- Backed 1:1 by BTC, with reserves meant to be verifiable onchain.
- Live on Ethereum as a standard ERC-20, so it works with existing wallets and DeFi protocols.
- One report says real-time reserve data comes from Chainlink, which adds transparency.
- Part of a broader Circle toolset, including USDC, CCTP and Gateway, which could ease integrations.
Watch out for
- Circle has not named the BTC custodian, and public sources show no audit of the reserves or contracts.
- Wrapped BTC depends on a central issuer, so holders carry custodian and issuer risk that native Bitcoin does not have.
- TVL is small, at about $17.7 million, and fell roughly 54% in a week, so liquidity and DeFi integrations are still early.
- It competes with larger established wrapped BTC tokens such as WBTC and Coinbase's cbBTC.
- Mint and redeem fees, eligibility and minimums are not published, and the product is aimed at institutions.
- It is live on Ethereum only according to public sources, so other chains are not yet covered.
Circle Bitcoin fees
Circle does not publish a fee schedule for cirBTC. Mint and redeem terms would be set through Circle's Mint service and its account agreements, and institutions should expect to confirm them with Circle directly.
Once the token is on Ethereum, holders pay normal network gas for transfers and any DeFi activity, plus whatever trading fees the exchange or pool charges. Those costs are set by each venue, not by cirBTC.
Is Circle Bitcoin safe?
cirBTC carries issuer and custody risk. Holders rely on Circle and its custodian to hold the BTC and honour redemptions. Circle says the backing is verifiable onchain, and one report adds that the BTC is held in separate custody. The custodian is not named, and no audits are listed for the project.
There is also smart-contract risk on Ethereum, plus the usual risks of any DeFi venue where you deploy the token. The 54% weekly drop in TVL shows that liquidity can shift quickly while the product is new. Regulatory treatment of wrapped assets varies by jurisdiction, so check the rules where you live.
6 steps
How to get started with Circle Bitcoin
- 1
Confirm that using wrapped BTC is permitted where you live and that you understand custodian and smart-contract risk.
- 2
Set up an Ethereum-compatible wallet and fund it with ETH for gas.
- 3
Check the token contract address through Circle's official channels before buying, to avoid lookalike tokens.
- 4
Acquire cirBTC on a supported exchange or DeFi venue, or apply for Circle Mint if you are an eligible institution.
- 5
Check the onchain reserve data to see how much BTC backs the supply.
- 6
Start with a small amount before lending, borrowing or providing liquidity with it.
Who Circle Bitcoin is for
cirBTC suits institutions, DeFi users and treasuries that want BTC on Ethereum and trust a regulated stablecoin issuer as the wrapper. It is less suitable for anyone who wants to avoid custodial risk entirely, or who needs the deep liquidity of the established wrapped BTC tokens.
