Lombard LBTC Review 2026: Yield-Bearing Bitcoin on DeFi

Lombard issues LBTC, a yield-bearing Bitcoin token backed 1:1 by BTC, now targeting 2.5% APY via a Bitwise-managed options strategy. It is a major restaked-BTC product, but it adds custodian and consortium trust that holding plain BTC does not.

Our verdict on Lombard LBTC

7.8/10

Lombard LBTC suits Bitcoin holders who want modest, BTC-denominated yield and the ability to use BTC as DeFi collateral without selling. Its strengths are named custodians, a multi-party validator consortium, and wide protocol integration. The main caveat is trust: you rely on custodians, validators, contracts and an off-chain options strategy, and the 2.5% APY is only a target. Not suited to anyone who wants to hold pure native BTC with no counterparty exposure.

What is Lombard LBTC?

Lombard is a Bitcoin-focused DeFi infrastructure company. Its main product, LBTC, is a yield-bearing Bitcoin token that Lombard says is 1:1 backed by native bitcoin. DefiLlama lists it under Restaked BTC on Bitcoin and Ethereum, with about $570 million in TVL.

The homepage describes a six-product suite: LBTC, BTC.b, Bitcoin Smart Accounts, Bitcoin Earn, Bitcoin Onchain Credit Strategy and the Lombard SDK. It claims 270,000 users, more than $3B of BTC onboarded and 50+ protocol integrations. These figures come from Lombard itself and are not independently verified here.

A recent change moved LBTC to an institutional yield model with a 2.5% net APY target, using an options strategy managed by Bitwise. This replaces the idea of yield from staking and puts the focus on a traditional-finance-style strategy. DefiLlama also lists a BARD token and two audits, while the homepage cites 10+ audits.

How Lombard LBTC works

Users deposit native bitcoin with Lombard and receive LBTC, a token on chains such as Ethereum that is described as 1:1 backed by that BTC. The BTC is held by qualified custodians, with Anchorage and Kraken named. Mint, burn and bridge actions are validated by a Security Consortium, and the homepage says minting needs 10 of 14 validators to approve.

The yield comes from an off-chain covered-call options strategy managed by Bitwise Investment Manager, LLC. A covered call earns premium by selling call options against held assets, which can produce income but caps some upside. LBTC targets 2.5% APY, with yield denominated in Bitcoin.

Because LBTC is a token, it can be used in DeFi: as collateral to borrow stablecoins, in liquidity pools, or in other strategies. Lombard says it is integrated across 50+ protocols on 10+ chains.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Backed 1:1 by native bitcoin with named qualified custodians, Anchorage and Kraken.
  • Validation by a multi-institution Security Consortium with a 10-of-14 minting threshold.
  • Broad DeFi use, with 50+ protocol integrations on 10+ chains according to Lombard.
  • Yield is denominated in Bitcoin, so holders stay exposed to BTC rather than a stablecoin.
  • Public transparency resources, including Proof of Reserve, audits and a bug bounty.
  • Roughly $570 million in TVL on DefiLlama suggests sizeable adoption.

Watch out for

  • The 2.5% APY is a target, not a guaranteed rate, and depends on an off-chain covered-call options strategy.
  • Relies on off-chain custodians and a validator consortium, so counterparty and governance risk is higher than holding native BTC.
  • Smart-contract and bridge risk applies wherever LBTC is used as collateral or moved across chains.
  • TVL fell 5.9% over the last 7 days in the DefiLlama data, a reminder that balances can move quickly.
  • Not available in all jurisdictions, and fee details are not clearly published on the homepage.
  • A 2.5% target is modest compared with typical DeFi yields, and options strategies can underperform in some markets.

Lombard LBTC fees

Fees are not detailed. Lombard's homepage cites a target of 2.5% net APY for LBTC and up to 4% APY for Bitcoin Earn, but does not break out mint, redeem or management fees.

Users should check the Lombard app, docs and Terms of Use for mint and redeem costs. Network gas fees on Bitcoin and Ethereum, and any fees charged by DeFi protocols where LBTC is deployed, would apply on top.

Is Lombard LBTC safe?

LBTC security rests on several layers: custody with qualified custodians, a Security Consortium that validates mints, burns and bridging, and published audits. DefiLlama lists 2 audits, while the homepage cites 10+ audits and a bug bounty. The homepage also links to Proof of Reserve and transparency pages that readers can check themselves.

Still, holding LBTC is not the same as holding native BTC. You depend on custodians, the validator set, smart contracts and any bridge or DeFi protocol where you use the token. The yield strategy runs off-chain and is managed by a third party. The project does not describe any past incidents, and none are asserted here.

Lombard states its products are not available in all jurisdictions and that nothing on the site is financial advice. Check eligibility and read the Risk Disclosures before use.

6 steps

How to get started with Lombard LBTC

  1. 1

Confirm that Lombard's products are available in your jurisdiction and read the Terms of Use and Risk Disclosures.

  2. 2

Decide which product fits: LBTC for DeFi use, BTC.b for moving BTC onchain, or Bitcoin Earn for managed yield.

  3. 3

Open the Lombard app, including through Ledger Wallet if you use it, and connect a compatible wallet.

  4. 4

Deposit BTC to mint LBTC, or acquire LBTC on a supported DeFi venue.

  5. 5

Check the Proof of Reserve and transparency pages to see how supply is backed.

  6. 6

If you use LBTC as collateral elsewhere, review that protocol's liquidation rules and risks first.

Who Lombard LBTC is for

LBTC is aimed at long-term Bitcoin holders, institutions and DeFi users who want BTC-denominated yield and collateral that works across many protocols. It is less suitable for people who want zero counterparty risk or who are unable to use the product in their jurisdiction.
