ActiveSatLayer Review 2026: Bitcoin Restaking and BVS Explained
SatLayer is a Bitcoin restaking protocol that lets BTC and BTC liquid staking tokens back services called Bitcoin Validated Services. Tracked TVL is small and the core roadmap is still partly unreleased.

Our verdict on SatLayer
5.5/10SatLayer suits experienced DeFi users who want to put BTC or BTC liquid staking tokens to work and accept restaking risk. Its main strength is a clear idea, backed by named audit firms and a broad partner list. The main caveat is traction: DefiLlama tracks only about $178,000 in TVL, the homepage numbers conflict with that, and the operator and service phases are still marked coming soon. Treat it as early-stage and research the docs first.

What is SatLayer?
SatLayer describes itself as the economic layer for Bitcoin. It aims to make BTC programmable by letting it serve as collateral that secures other dApps and protocols, called Bitcoin Validated Services (BVSs). DefiLlama files it under Anchor BTC and lists it since January 2025.
The homepage names several partners, including Babylon, Sui, Berachain, BNB Chain, Bitlayer, TAC, BOB, Avail, Bedrock, Bima and CAP. It also lists five audit firms: Asymptotic, Coinspect, Dedaub, Salus and Zellic.
The numbers need care. The homepage shows $200M in total value locked, but DefiLlama tracks about $178,000, down 2.1% over seven days. The homepage's '200M BTC restaked' figure is clearly not a real BTC amount. Treat the independent DefiLlama figure as the better guide to current usage.
How SatLayer works
Restaking lets an asset that already secures one system be reused to secure others. SatLayer applies this to Bitcoin. Users deposit BTC or BTC liquid staking tokens into vaults, and that capital acts as collateral for services the project calls Bitcoin Validated Services (BVSs).
According to the homepage, Phase I is live: users deposit into SatLayer vaults on Babylon Genesis as early adopters and earn rewards. Phases II and III are marked coming soon. They are meant to let operators and services join and validate their services using restaked Bitcoin.
The homepage says yield comes from partner projects that generate revenue on BVSs, through things like insurance and liquidity float. The project does not give the exact reward formula or how slashing works, so those details are best checked in the documentation.

Key features
01
Bitcoin restaking vaults
Users deposit BTC or BTC liquid staking tokens into SatLayer vaults to earn rewards. Phase I of the roadmap is marked live and uses Babylon Genesis.
02
Bitcoin Validated Services
Services secured by restaked BTC are called BVSs. They draw on shared Bitcoin-backed collateral instead of building their own security from scratch.
03
Operator network
The protocol describes a network of operators that help projects launch and secure apps, coordinated by SatLayer. Operator applications are open via the site.
04
Developer onboarding
Developers can apply to build services secured by restaked Bitcoin. This is part of the later roadmap phases.
05
Revenue-linked yield
The homepage cites yield from insurance and liquidity float, funded by partner projects that it says earn revenue.
06
Multi-chain footprint
DefiLlama shows deployments across nine chains, and the homepage lists partners such as Babylon, Sui, Berachain, BNB Chain, Bitlayer, TAC and BOB.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Names five audit firms on its homepage: Asymptotic, Coinspect, Dedaub, Salus and Zellic
- Clear concept of using BTC as shared collateral for other services
- Deployed or listed across nine chains, including Ethereum, Base, Sui and Babylon Genesis
- Partner list includes several established L1 and L2 networks
- Documentation and an operator and developer application path are available
Watch out for
- DefiLlama tracks only about $178,000 in TVL, far below the $200M figure on the homepage, so adoption looks small
- Later roadmap phases (operators and services) are marked coming soon, so the main security use case is not yet live
- Restaking adds smart-contract, slashing and dependency risk on top of holding BTC
- The homepage claims '200M BTC restaked', which cannot be right and weakens trust in its headline stats
- Fees, lock-up terms and reward rates are not stated on its homepage
- Yield depends on partner services generating revenue, which is not independently verifiable from public sources
SatLayer fees
SatLayer's fees are not published. There is no stated deposit, withdrawal or performance fee, and no stated reward rate.
Users would normally see any fees, lock-up periods and yield figures in the app and documentation before depositing. You will also pay network gas fees on whichever chain you use.
Is SatLayer safe?
The homepage lists five auditors (Asymptotic, Coinspect, Dedaub, Salus and Zellic), and DefiLlama lists two audits. The audit reports are not public, so scope and findings could not be checked. Audits reduce risk but do not guarantee safety.
Restaking carries layered risk: smart-contract bugs in the vaults, dependency on partners such as Babylon and the BVSs, and possible penalties if a secured service fails. The project does not describe custody details, slashing rules or any incidents. Tracked TVL is small, and the homepage figures do not match DefiLlama, so read the docs and size positions cautiously.
6 steps
How to get started with SatLayer
- 1
Read the SatLayer documentation to understand vault terms, lock-ups and risks.
- 2
Check that you hold BTC or a supported BTC liquid staking token on a supported chain.
- 3
Connect a compatible wallet through the Launch App button on the official site.
- 4
Review the vault, reward and any fee details shown in the app before confirming.
- 5
Start with a small deposit to learn how deposits and withdrawals work.
- 6
Monitor your position and protocol announcements, since slashing and contract risk can change over time.
Who SatLayer is for
SatLayer is for BTC holders comfortable with DeFi who want to earn rewards by restaking Bitcoin or BTC liquid staking tokens, and for developers or operators interested in building on Bitcoin-backed security. It is not suited to anyone who needs guaranteed returns or simple custody-free holding.
SatLayer FAQs
What is SatLayer?
SatLayer is a protocol that uses restaked Bitcoin to provide security and collateral for other protocols, which it calls Bitcoin Validated Services (BVSs). Users deposit BTC or BTC liquid staking tokens into vaults and earn rewards.
Does SatLayer have a token?
SatLayer has a token called SLAY, according to DefiLlama. The project does not give its supply, distribution or utility, so check the project documentation before relying on it.
Has SatLayer been audited?
The homepage lists Asymptotic, Coinspect, Dedaub, Salus and Zellic as auditors. DefiLlama lists two audits. An audit lowers risk but does not remove it, and the project does not include the reports.
Which chains does SatLayer support?
DefiLlama lists Ethereum, BNB Chain, Sui, Babylon Genesis, Berachain, Bitlayer, Base, TAC and BOB. The homepage says Phase I deposits happen in vaults on Babylon Genesis.
Is SatLayer safe?
No. Restaking exposes deposited BTC to smart-contract bugs, possible slashing penalties and the failure of the services it secures. Reward rates are not stated publicly, and the tracked TVL is small. Only deposit what you can afford to lose.
What is live on SatLayer today?
Public sources say Phase I is live, where users deposit Bitcoin or liquid staking tokens into vaults on Babylon Genesis. Phases II and III, which bring in operators and services, are marked coming soon.
