Our verdict on Blink

7.3/10

Blink suits newcomers, merchants and remittance users who want a simple Lightning wallet with the option of self-custody. Its main strengths are easy onboarding, several ways to receive sats, no fee between Blink users and a non-custodial mode powered by Spark. The main caveat is that features and account modes vary by country, and the custodial mode places trust in the operator. Check availability for your country and read the fee section before moving significant funds.

What is Blink?

Blink, formerly Bitcoin Beach Wallet, is a Bitcoin wallet that started in El Zonte and aims to drive bottom-up adoption of bitcoin. It targets everyday users, shoppers and merchants, and describes itself as suitable for both beginners and experts.

The wallet supports several ways of receiving payments: a Lightning Address, Lightning invoices, a printable Paycode, an on-chain address and a point-of-sale web app. It also includes a merchant map, a contact list, a transaction log and an educational quiz that pays small sat rewards.

Blink is open source, with its code on GitHub, and it is tied to the Galoy Lightning platform. The footer names BBW, S.A. de C.V. as the copyright holder. Blink says its services are not available in all countries, so availability is the first thing to check.

How Blink works

Blink is a Bitcoin wallet that supports Lightning Network payments as well as on-chain Bitcoin. Lightning is a layer on top of Bitcoin that handles fast, small payments through payment channels. Blink says a dedicated team manages its Lightning liquidity and channels so payments work reliably.

In Custodial Mode, Blink holds funds for the user, so recovery is possible if you lose access. In Non-Custodial Mode, the wallet uses the Spark protocol, and the user holds the keys. Blink cannot access, freeze or recover those funds.

The Dollar Balance lets users keep part of their holdings in a USD-denominated balance. In Custodial Mode it is powered by Stablesats. In Non-Custodial Mode it holds USDB, a stablecoin issued by Brale on Spark. Transfers between the bitcoin and dollar balances are not available in every country or mode.

Key features

01

Two custody modes

Choose between a custodial account where Blink can assist with recovery, and a Spark-powered non-custodial account where you alone control the keys. Which one you can use varies by country.

02

Many ways to receive

Receive sats through a Lightning Address, a Lightning invoice, a printable Paycode, an on-chain address, or a point-of-sale web app. This suits small businesses, fundraising and remittances.

03

Dollar Balance

Hold a USD-denominated balance next to your bitcoin, powered by Stablesats in Custodial Mode or by the USDB stablecoin in Non-Custodial Mode.

04

Free Blink-to-Blink payments

Payments between two Blink users carry no transaction fee, according to the project.

05

Merchant map and contacts

A map shows nearby businesses that accept Bitcoin or Lightning payments, and a contact list makes it easy to pay friends and family.

06

Learn and earn quiz

An in-app quiz teaches Bitcoin basics and rewards users with sats, which helps beginners.

07

Languages and display currencies

The app is translated into many languages, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Czech, German, Thai, Catalan and Swahili. It supports more than 30 display currencies.

08

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Two custody options let users pick between recovery support and full self-custody
  • No transaction fee between Blink users, according to the project
  • Several ways to receive sats, useful for merchants and remittances
  • Open source code and a public API
  • Beginner-friendly onboarding with lessons, a quiz and many languages
  • Optional USD-denominated Dollar Balance next to bitcoin

Watch out for

  • Features, account modes and the Dollar Balance are not available in every country, so some users get only a reduced version
  • Custodial Mode means Blink holds your funds and carries counterparty risk
  • Non-Custodial Mode means Blink cannot recover your funds, so a lost seed or device can mean permanent loss
  • The project does not publish security audit reports on its FAQ homepage
  • Full fee schedules for on-chain and cross-wallet payments are not shown on the main page
  • The Dollar Balance depends on Stablesats in Custodial Mode and on a Brale-issued stablecoin in Non-Custodial Mode, which adds issuer and mechanism risk

Blink fees

Blink states that there is no transaction fee when both sender and receiver use Blink. That covers payments between Blink accounts.

The FAQ has a dedicated Transaction Fees section, but the main overview does not list rates for Lightning payments to other wallets, on-chain transactions, or Dollar Balance conversions. Check that section and the in-app fee display before sending larger amounts.

Is Blink safe?

In Custodial Mode, Blink holds your funds, so you rely on the operator's security and solvency. In Non-Custodial Mode, you hold your own keys and Blink cannot access, freeze or recover your funds, so protecting your backup is entirely your responsibility. The app has Security Settings, and the FAQ has a Custody & Security section.

The project does not publish audit reports or licensing details on its FAQ overview. Because the wallet is open source, the code can be reviewed by outsiders, which is a transparency benefit but not a substitute for a formal audit. Service availability is restricted by country, so follow your local rules and keep only amounts you can afford to lose in a Lightning wallet.

6 steps

How to get started with Blink

  1. 1

Check the Blink FAQ to confirm the app and your preferred account mode are available in your country.

  2. 2

Download the Blink app and create an account, choosing Custodial or Non-Custodial Mode where both are offered.

  3. 3

If you use Non-Custodial Mode, back up your recovery details carefully, since Blink cannot recover those funds.

  4. 4

Set your display currency and review the Security Settings in the app.

  5. 5

Receive a first small amount via a Lightning invoice, Lightning Address or on-chain address.

  6. 6

Try the in-app quiz, contact list and merchant map to get familiar with the app, and move larger sums only once you are comfortable.

Who Blink is for

Blink fits Bitcoin beginners who want guided onboarding, small merchants who need a Lightning point of sale, and people sending or receiving remittances. Users who want full control should look at Non-Custodial Mode where it is available. It is a weaker fit for anyone in a country where the wallet's features are restricted.
