Our verdict on Picnic

7.0/10

Picnic suits Brazil-linked users who want one self-custodial account for reais, dollars, euros and crypto, plus a Visa card with no IOF. Its main strength is the combination of local rails like Pix with on-chain custody and biometric login. The main caveat is limited transparency: partners, audit details and a full fee schedule are not public, and usage figures are self-reported. Check the in-app quotes and eligibility before depositing.

What is Picnic?

Picnic is a global, on-chain, self-custodial account app. It lets users hold Brazilian reais, US dollars, euros and crypto, and spend through a Visa debit card. DefiLlama lists it in the Indexes category on Polygon, with listing dating from April 2022, and two audits are noted there.

The homepage is aimed at Brazilians, with the line to take Brazil out of your money. It claims $240M+ in volume moved, 100k+ users and a 4.8 App Store rating. These are the project's own figures and are not independently verified here.

DefiLlama shows no TVL and no token for Picnic. It works more like a fintech-style wallet and card than a typical DeFi protocol, which is why it is placed in the wallets group here.

How Picnic works

Picnic is an app layered on top of a smart wallet on the blockchain. Balances in digital dollars, reais and euros sit in that wallet, and the user authorizes movements with a passkey and phone biometrics. DefiLlama lists the project on Polygon, though the homepage does not name the chain.

You add money through local rails such as Pix, ACH or SEPA, or by sending crypto. Operations that need a license, such as fiat conversion, are handled by regulated partners, according to the site. You can then convert between currencies, swap crypto, send money, or move funds to the card balance.

DefiLlama's description says Picnic batches the transactions needed to interact with DeFi protocols so users do not have to do each step themselves. That fits the automatic yield feature, though the homepage does not detail where the yield comes from.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Self-custody model: the site says Picnic cannot access keys or move assets.
  • Local deposit options: Pix, ACH, SEPA and crypto transfers.
  • No monthly account fee and no annual card fee, per the site.
  • Visa card usable in 180+ countries with Apple Pay and Google Pay support.
  • Passkey and biometric login removes passwords.
  • DefiLlama lists two audits for the project.

Watch out for

  • No public TVL figure is listed on DefiLlama, so on-chain usage cannot be checked independently.
  • Regulated operations such as fiat on-ramps and the card run through partners that the site does not name.
  • Marketing is aimed at Brazilian users, so availability and eligibility elsewhere are unclear.
  • Deposit limits, timing and availability vary by method and eligibility, and the details are not published on the homepage.
  • Self-custody means the user is responsible for the exportable key, and a lost or mishandled key can mean lost funds.
  • Usage figures such as $240M+ volume and 100k+ users are self-reported and not independently verified.

Picnic fees

Picnic says there is no monthly fee to open or maintain an account, no annual fee for the card, and free virtual card creation. For conversions, transfers and other operations, any Picnic fee is shown in the app before you confirm.

The homepage mentions a promotional window, from September 15 to 22, in which fees are waived on eligible operations. A full fee schedule is not published publicly, so check quoted rates in the app. The Pix deposit example shows a quoted rate with fees included, and external costs such as network fees may still apply.

Is Picnic safe?

Picnic states that custody is with the user, that access uses passkeys and biometrics, and that an exportable key lets users reach the on-chain account without Picnic's interface. DefiLlama lists two audits, but the project does not name the auditors or findings. No incidents appear.

Operations that require a license are said to be carried out by regulated partners under the supervision of relevant authorities. The partners are not named publicly. Self-custody removes company-held balance risk but adds smart-wallet, key-management and partner risks. Users should review the app's terms and eligibility rules and only deposit what they can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with Picnic

  1. 1

Download the Picnic app or open the web version from the official site.

  2. 2

Create an account and set up passkey login with your phone's biometrics.

  3. 3

Back up or understand the exportable key option so you keep control of access.

  4. 4

Choose a deposit method: Pix for reais, ACH or wire for dollars, SEPA for euros, or a crypto transfer.

  5. 5

Check the quoted rate and fees shown in the app before confirming the deposit.

  6. 6

Convert, invest or send funds, or move money to the card's dedicated balance to spend.

Who Picnic is for

Picnic is for Brazilian residents and travelers who want to keep savings in dollars or euros, convert to reais only when spending, and hold their own keys. It is less suited to users who want a fully transparent DeFi protocol with published TVL, or who are outside the markets the app targets.
