Phantom Review 2026: A Solana-First Self-Custody Wallet

Phantom is a self-custody crypto wallet built mainly for Solana, with a built-in dApp browser and some support for other chains. It is easy to use, but users carry all the custody risk.

DappsAtlas score

7.2/10

Good

Our verdict on Phantom

7.2/10

Phantom suits Solana users who want a wallet that holds their own keys and connects directly to dApps and NFT marketplaces from one app. Its main strengths are its Solana focus, the built-in dApp browser and some multi-chain support. The main caveat is that self-custody leaves all backup and security responsibility with you, and a reported 2024 update incident linked to a large loss shows that mistakes can be costly. Fees and audits are not published in the sources reviewed, so check them in the app.

What is Phantom?

Phantom is a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet. Third-party write-ups describe it as designed to simplify managing digital assets, mainly in the Solana ecosystem, while also supporting assets across multiple blockchains.

Reviewers highlight two things: a built-in browser for opening supported dApps, DeFi protocols and NFT marketplaces, and multi-chain support that helps Solana users who also use Ethereum or other networks. One write-up says the multi-chain support is not perfect yet.

The project's own homepage was not available for this review, so details such as audits, fees and team are not confirmed here. One report from November 2024 says an update logged a user out of his account and was linked to a loss of about $1 million, which is a reminder that self-custody puts the burden of backup and security on the user.

How Phantom works

A crypto wallet does not actually store coins. It stores the private keys that prove you control addresses on a blockchain. Phantom generates those keys, protects them with a password on your device, and gives you a seed phrase that can restore the wallet anywhere.

When you use a dApp, the app asks Phantom to sign a transaction or a connection request. You review it and approve, and the signed message goes to the network. Phantom's built-in browser, as reviewers describe it, lets you reach supported dApps and marketplaces from inside the wallet.

Because Phantom is built around Solana, most activity involves Solana tokens, NFTs and DeFi apps. Third-party write-ups say it also handles Ethereum and other chains.

6 features

Key features

01

Self-custody wallet

You create and hold your own keys rather than leaving assets with an exchange. Phantom does not take custody of funds.

02

Solana-first design

Phantom is built around Solana, handling SOL and other Solana-based tokens and NFTs.

03

Multi-chain support

Third-party write-ups say the wallet also works across other blockchains, including Ethereum, so users can manage several networks in one app.

04

Built-in dApp browser

Reviewers describe a built-in browser for opening supported dApps, DeFi protocols and NFT marketplaces without leaving the wallet.

05

Custom token support

Users can add custom tokens that do not appear by default, which is useful for newer Solana tokens.

06

Transfers from exchanges

Guides show users receiving crypto from exchanges and other services into a Phantom address, so it works as a destination wallet for withdrawals.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Self-custody design keeps keys with the user rather than an exchange
  • Focused on Solana, where speed and low friction matter to most users
  • Built-in dApp browser removes the need to switch tabs or paste addresses
  • Multi-chain support reduces the need for several wallets
  • Supports adding custom tokens, which suits newer Solana assets

Watch out for

  • Self-custody means a lost seed phrase cannot be recovered by any support team
  • A reported November 2024 update logged a user out and was linked to a loss of about $1 million, which shows how wallet updates can go wrong
  • Ethereum and other non-Solana support is described as still maturing
  • Fees, audit reports and team details are not published in the sources reviewed
  • Built-in dApp browsing exposes users to malicious or poorly built apps
  • Name confusion with an unrelated token and many unrelated films makes fake sites and lookalikes more likely

Phantom fees

The sources reviewed do not publish a fee schedule for Phantom. Any transaction you send pays the network fee of the blockchain it runs on, and that fee is set by the network rather than by the wallet.

If the wallet charges for built-in features, the cost should be shown in the app before you confirm an action. Check that screen each time, because the project does not state fees in the material reviewed.

Is Phantom safe?

Phantom is described as self-custody, so you rather than a company control the keys. That removes exchange counterparty risk, but anyone who gets your seed phrase can empty the wallet, and a lost phrase cannot be recovered. Never type it into a website or share it with support staff.

The sources reviewed do not publish audit reports, a bug bounty or details of the team. One report dated November 2024 says a wallet update logged a user out and he lost roughly $1 million. This comes from a single source, but it shows why you should back up your seed phrase before updating or relying on any wallet.

Approve dApp connections carefully, since a malicious app can request permissions that drain tokens. Make sure you are using the real Phantom software, as lookalike sites exist for popular wallets.

6 steps

How to get started with Phantom

  1. 1

Get the app or browser extension only from the official Phantom source and check the address carefully to avoid lookalike sites.

  2. 2

Create a new wallet and write the seed phrase on paper, stored offline and never shared.

  3. 3

Set a strong password or lock method for the wallet.

  4. 4

Copy your wallet address and send a small test amount from an exchange or another wallet.

  5. 5

Confirm the funds arrived and the network matches before moving larger amounts.

  6. 6

Open a supported dApp from the browser and review each permission request before approving it.

Who Phantom is for

Phantom is for people who use Solana apps, NFTs or DeFi and want to manage their own keys in a single wallet. It is less suited to anyone who is not ready to look after a seed phrase, or who needs formal guarantees such as published audits and a documented fee schedule before using a wallet.

Phantom FAQs

What is Phantom wallet?

Phantom is a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet. Write-ups describe it as designed to simplify managing digital assets, mainly in the Solana ecosystem, while also handling assets across several blockchains.

Which blockchains does Phantom support?

It is primarily a Solana wallet. Third-party write-ups say it also supports Ethereum and other chains, though one describes that multi-chain support as still improving. Check the current list of supported networks inside the app before sending funds.

Is Phantom wallet safe?

Phantom is described as self-custody, so you hold the keys and the seed phrase. That removes exchange counterparty risk but means nobody can reset or recover your wallet. One report from November 2024 says an app update logged a user out and he lost about $1 million, so back up your seed phrase securely before relying on it.

How much does Phantom cost?

The sources reviewed do not publish a fee schedule. Network fees on the underlying blockchain apply to transactions, and any extra fee on in-app features would be shown in the app at the time of the action.

Can I use Phantom to connect to dApps?

Yes. Reviewers describe a built-in browser that lets you open supported dApps inside the wallet and connect without copying addresses between tabs. Treat each connection as a permission and only approve apps you trust.

How do I get started with Phantom?

Install the wallet from its official source, create a new wallet, and write down the seed phrase offline. Then you can receive crypto to your address, for example by transferring from an exchange. Always check the address before sending.
