Decentralized BTC projects let Bitcoin holders use their coins on other blockchains. Bitcoin itself does not support smart contracts in the way Ethereum or Solana do, so these protocols issue a token on another chain that is backed by real BTC. That token can then go into lending markets, liquidity pools or staking without selling the underlying Bitcoin.
The mechanics differ by project. A user deposits BTC, and a network of signers, node operators or smart contracts holds or controls it while a matching token is minted elsewhere. Redeeming burns the token and releases the BTC. Revenue is usually modest and comes from minting or redemption fees, protocol-level incentives, or the wider network economy that the project belongs to. Users also pay normal network fees on each chain they touch.
When comparing options, look at how custody works and who can move the backing BTC, how large the TVL is, which chains the token is available on, and how deep its liquidity is in DeFi. On our list, tBTC has the largest TVL at the time of writing, Chain Fusion offers ckBTC and ckETH through the Internet Computer, and Zeus Network focuses on zBTC across Solana and several other chains. Any bridged asset carries smart contract and peg risk, so read each project's documentation before depositing. In this guide, the 2026 figures are snapshots and will change.}

Frequently asked questions
What does decentralized BTC mean?
Decentralized BTC means a Bitcoin-backed token that can be used on other blockchains, such as Ethereum or Solana, without handing your coins to a single exchange or custodian. The BTC is locked or held through a network of signers or smart contracts, and a matching token is issued on the other chain. You can then use that token in DeFi.
Is wrapped or bridged BTC the same as real Bitcoin?
Not exactly. Native Bitcoin stays on the Bitcoin network, while tBTC, ckBTC and zBTC are separate tokens that represent Bitcoin on other chains. Their value depends on the bridge or protocol that backs them holding up as designed, so they carry extra risk beyond Bitcoin itself.
What are the risks of using a BTC bridge?
The main risks are smart contract bugs, failures or collusion among the signers or node operators, and the token drifting from its 1:1 peg. Liquidity can also be thin on newer chains. Bridges have been a frequent target for exploits across crypto, so it is sensible to keep amounts you can afford to lose.
How do tBTC, Chain Fusion and Zeus Network differ?
tBTC is run by Threshold Network and mints a Bitcoin-backed token on Ethereum, with a focus on DeFi and institutional use. Chain Fusion is the Internet Computer's approach, issuing chain-key tokens like ckBTC and ckETH without a traditional bridge. Zeus Network mints zBTC on Solana and other chains. At the time of writing, tBTC has the largest TVL of the three on our list, at about $347.8M.
Do these protocols charge fees?
Usually there are network fees on both Bitcoin and the destination chain, and some protocols charge a minting or redemption fee. Fees change with network congestion and with each protocol's rules, so check the current fee schedule before you start. Fees may also apply when you swap or lend the token afterward.
Can I use these tokens for gambling, and are there age limits?
This category is about Bitcoin-based DeFi infrastructure rather than casino games, but these tokens can be used in crypto products that include gambling. If you use any gambling service, you must be 18 or older (21 or older in some places), and you should check that online gambling is legal where you live. Never try to bypass age checks, KYC or location rules.
